      Current To Do:

      • List player-available elements, define somewhat they can do.
      • Define the noble hierarchy.
      • Get a wiki up and running.
      • Decide on system / mechanics.
      • Learn how to build in Evennia.
      • Beg @Kay to build me a grid.
      • Pour through Arx-code graciously shared by @Tehom.
      • Cry in a corner until code-frustration stops.
      • Send @Ifrit a cupcake for all his server-side help.

@kanye-qwest said in Let's talk about TS.:

I find myself a little put off by sexual interests and such in ooc formats. It feels..weirdly player intimate, to me. When I do TS, to be frank, it's not really about gratification for ME. It's about the characters. I'm fine with a quick "this is the level of language I'm comfortable with, this is a hard FTB point/event for me", etc, but like a browsable list of wants and less-wants is decidedly not my jam.

Yeah, I just provide code. It's not my jam for non-sex games (ala Shang or an Anitaverse or Kushiel game where staff are 100% upfront it's meant to be a sex-game with some world cohesion).

The code can be easily modified, but it's intended purpose was to let people match up with other people that like similar styles/focuses. Like some people really love adventure RP and hate casual/bar-RP. Some people are absolutely fine with casual/bar-RP but feel stressed out by high stakes adventure RP.

If you do any SpecFic, you could try out "Forsaken Lands: Tragedy" by Sydney Cooper. It might seem high fantasy ish at first but it isn't really. She is a independent author with that one novel out and two short story slash novellas out.

      Teamwork makes the dream work.

It was super nice of him to just send it all to me, but not gonna lie I opened it and looked at the stuff for rolling and was like "this isn't so bad"... and then looked at the roster code and alt+f4'd the editor and closed potato and was like:

I'm taking a nap NO MORE CODE.

(But that's b/c I've spent the last five hours working with @Ifrit messing with the server getting the main page, and then the character wiki set up.)

ETA: (I'm sucker, I went back and glanced at some of the other code. Man this stuff is awesome. I don't know the fine details of how it all works because I'm just learning python. But maaaan, so good and the code looks so clean and easy to read!)

@magee101 It doesn't send me running for the hills. I know how to the rules for casting in mage. I have had multiple people comment to me that looking at that image has completely turned them off of playing mage. @Sparks Is a good example of people turned off on mage. "This is too complicated, I'm going back to D&D." (Paraphrasing here.)

I'm glad it helps you, but it doesn't help everyone and it actively turns off some people.

Daughter of the Blood - Book 1 of a series. High fantasy, tetch of romance, mostly about a girl with too much power trying to reach the point where she can use it to save her peoples.

My bestfriend once told me that she thought I was basically a real life 'Surreal'.... and later when she based a character off of me for her novel she made me a sociopath. : |

      Ahem.

      Anywise.

I'll raise you Daughter of the Blood, and give you Troubled Waters & Royal Airs

They are both a touchy romancy, but Sharon Shinn is so amazing that if you stray away from that for that you're a horrible fucking person. > : |

The world building, everything is amazing. siiiigh

Her Samara series is amazing too. Also a touchy romancey, but still amazing. I have not read her Shifting Circle series yet, but I keep meaning to. 'The Shape-Changers Wife' is amazing, as well.

Oh, there is also Chalice by Robin McKinley.

    • Code Discussion: Ambiance Emits

      Ambiance Emits?
An Ambiance emit is as a work of code that sends either to a room or a person sort of semi-random emit. For a room this might be something like 'you hear birds chirping outside' or 'thunder rolls outside, and rain beats on the windows' or 'you hear a car door slamming somewhere outside on the street blow'. For a person it might be emotions that come and go: 'You feel lonely for some reason?' or 'You shift from foot to foot feeling restless.' Or maybe even 'You crave cheese and fried foods.'

In the case of the game I'm working on, it might be something like: 'You feel a little shiver of magic in the air.' Or 'You crave the taste of the Clora.' Or 'You're feeling a little low on energy.' For personal emits. And room ones might be something like 'A Sky-seeded flies past your window.' Or 'A Spark-Seeded sends a spark of lightning from the sky outside your window.' Or 'A Fire-Seeded brushes past you, and you feel uncomfortable warm until they're gone.'

Would this add to your RP or would you find it annoying?

Would you like it if it was something you could easily turn on and off?

Or just 'no' don't waste your time on such code?

@ominous said in Development Thread: Sacred Seed:

@sunny Notice the "what they view to be" that I intentionally put in my statement just for this very reason.

What has been laid out does not appear to be "realistic" to someone for reasons they articulated very well. This breaks their suspension of disbelief, which I imagine most people don't find fun. It's great that it doesn't bother you. It bothers them and they explained why. I was pointing out that you were badwrongfunning someone for having different standards than you.

I just want to be clear here, I'm not saying that @Pyrephox or @Carex are wrong for their suggestions, or that it's wrongfun for wanting that level of verisimilitude. It just isn't the type of fun that I want to enforce and run as the game designer. I hope that there's enough of interest in the setting for them to overlook the breaking of their suspension of disbelief and play when we're ready, but I'll understand if they chose not to play and won't hold it against them.

As a kind of attached tangent: This isn't going to be one of those projects that I set up over night. @Coin and I are writing a completely different world which comes with a bunch of different questions (are there other nations, what do our people know about the other nations, can people play those other nation-characters?, etc), a completely difficult culture (how did they culture evolve, why are they like x or y, what history do they have, etc), and I'm learning a whole new code language (aaaaauggh! How do I find where something 'is' via the code?! I just wanna build a +where! Q.Q).

There's going to be a lot of tinkering and fine tuning of theme before we're ready for even alpha, and then in alpha I imagine some theme will be shored up and fine tuned as people engage with the world we're creating. 😄

Currently, the only person that I see espousing One True Right and Only Wayism in this thread is you. You're convinced that a tool meant as a reference to a complicated rules system should be somehow simpler and more streamlined, and that anything less is somehow a detriment.

@cobaltasaurus said in Helpful Spellcasting Flowchart:

But I can understand how someone would find it useful as a reminder of rules they've already learned. Especially if they're in the happen of doing things less based off of their spells, and more freeform creative thaumaturgy.

Maybe finish reading the thread first, bb.

Generally overall, I think that the best course is to pick PBs (and hopefully good ones), but have a note that players can change the PB of their character so long as they aren't like ... whitewashing characters.

@Derp @surreality My objection was how @magee101 came across, to me, like s/he was saying that if you found this chart off putting then you couldn't enjoy mage. I'm not going to put in the energy to go back and directly quote it, but considering magee flat out said "if you find this off putting then mage isn't for you", I don't think I'm out of bounds in taking their words to mean that their way was the correct way and any other way was not.

Even told them: I'm glad it helps you, but it doesn't help everyone.

I'm not sure how that makes me the one saying there's only one right way.

I got frustrated and finally resorted to sarcasm. Obviously I shouldn't have, but like I said I resort to sarcasm when I feel like I've hit a brick wall.

    • GoFundMe for WoD author

I'm pasting the main text from the GFM, cause I never know what to say... But since we've had a lot of WoD Mu* over the years... I thought I would share:

Nicky Rea and Jackie Cassada have been longtime luminaries of the RPG scene. As authors and designers, they worked on hundreds of titles among over a dozen lines, most notably Changeling: The Dreaming, Mage: The Ascension, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Dungeons & Dragons, and Ravenloft. As a couple, they had been together 57 years, defying many obstacles of gender, race, ageism, industry sexism, and social queerphobia. Despite those impediments, their accomplishments as artists, mentors, and friends have been astonishing.

In December 2020, both Nicky and Jackie contracted Covid-19. Nicky survived, with lasting complications; Jackie passed away on December 29. Between the medical bills, ongoing health concerns, funeral expenses, and the ongoing cost of housing, Nicky Rea could use all the help she can get.

Although they've been prolific authors in popular book series, the industry in which they've worked functions on a work-for-hire model. Thus, Nicky and Jackie did not receive royalties for the majority of their work. Now 69 years old, widowed, with major medical and financial concerns, Nicky needs whatever aid fans of their work can spare, as quickly as possible. Without such aid, Nicky, their pets, and their housemate might soon become homeless.

Thank you for any help you can offer.
