    • RE: Critters!

      HEY GUYS!!

So you're probably not familiar with this unless you live in Florida or happen to be obsessed with greyhounds, but long story short, in FL they've passed Amendment 13, which will result in the closure of all of of Florida's remaining greyhound racetracks within the next two years.

Regardless of your stance on the tracks, the fact of the matter is, almost 8,000 current racers will be put out of service, and the eradication of the industry also puts another near 7,000 dogs, including breeding bitches and puppies, out of use as well, within that time.

The various greyhound adoption groups around the US are mobilizing to do their very best to try and take in and foster these dogs in order to find them homes over the next couple of years. Greyhounds fresh off the track do need to learn and transition into being a "pet" rather than a working dog, but by and large they are gentle, quiet, and love to be lazy. They are actually pretty good apartment dogs.

Long story short, if you are considering adopting a dog in the next few years? Please consider adopting or fostering a greyhound. If you can't adopt or foster, consider donating time or money to a local greyhound adoption group. I've included a link to my local group, Greyhound Pets Inc., here for anyone interested in helping, whether it's to adopt, volunteer, or donate.

    • RE: Tips for not wearing out your welcome

@A-B Just chiming in here. I don't think @surreality was being incendiary. I know from her when she's incendiary and that is definitely not it.

But let's talk about what you just posted. What you just did there is leaving the pressure cooker on to explode. Your wiring is telling you that people mean things in the worst possible way, and you have to find the tools to help you determine if that's actually true.

If I can offer a suggestion? Try this. Any time you are in any kind of conversation with someone where you feel like they are being negative toward you and you legitimately aren't sure, or your initial, instant reaction is to extract the worst from what they've said, stop and calmly explain that sometimes you have difficulty processing people's tone, and could they please clarify their intention? If they are in fact hostile they'll make no bones about telling you, but I can promise you, nine out of ten times? They're not. It's a lesson I learned the hard way.

I have but one desire, and that one desire is:

      GRISHAVERSE.

Between the worldbuilding and the magic (ahem, small science tyvm) system, I think the play would be amazeballs.

    • The Shame Game

One of the purposes of boards like this (SWOFA, WORA, etc) has been to publically shame players and staffers that individuals in the community feel have acted in an inappropriate manner. "Name and shame" is even part of our vernacular as a community.

I've seen others mention that the point of public shaming is primarily to curtail the bad behavior, whether it's by giving the person targetted a come to Jesus or driving them out of the community. The more cynical might propose that it's simply because as people we love, love, love to rubberneck and expose dirty laundry.

Recently I've been reading the works of Brene Brown, a professor and author who researches the nature of shame, in an effort to improve my mental health. One of my takeaways from this was that one of the results of her research was the discovery that by and large, shaming people is not an effective tactic to get the result of permanently altering someone's behavior. It may cause a large swing to the opposite for a brief period, but eventually it will return to the previous pattern of bad behavior.

So what is the purpose of public shaming in our community? Are we invested in the idea of helping problem players to improve? Are we knuckling up to the idea that we do it simply for our own visceral enjoyment?

    • RE: Fanbase entitlement

      @ThatGuyThere said in Fanbase entitlement:

While these folks exist and I sadly know a few, I do think that if liking any entertainment property counts as a huge part of your life, priorities really need to be reassessed.

I don't know, man. I've come to a point in life where I kind of feel like judging someone else's quality of life based on my personal sense of what's acceptable and normal just falls into the realm of "none of my beeswax" save when it comes to issues of harm and consent and the like. Like...if these people are happy dressing in their Starfleet uniform to work every day or can only function if they tell themselves that "someday my Doctor will come", who am I to tell them that they can't be happy in their self-created paradigm as long as they're not harming themselves or anyone else?

Look, I can point out an abuse of power that someone I don't happen to be sunshine-and-rainbows with and it doesn't have to be personal.

Expressing that I genuinely hope they've made a point of learning from their own mistakes as well as acknowledging the flaws in the environment around them is not equivalent to me running around shrieking about an incident that happened literally decades ago and airing dirty laundry.

    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

It kind of needs to be rolled back, though. Starting with:

      1. What is a recipe? What is it for?
      2. What does a recipe consist of, ie what are the "ingredients"?
      3. Where do you get the ingredients/How do you acquire them?
      4. What are the various "recipes" for different items that may be constructed?
      5. What is the step by step instruction for how to use the related commands?

This is the kind of approach that's needed to most of the commands and game features I've come across.

I would love a task guide. Which is to say, not a "guide on how to use the task system" (though I'd love that too) but rather a manual to the tune of "you are playing a noble with lands, these are the things you are expected to do, here are the commands most relevant to you" and so forth, same for crafter oriented types, combat oriented types, etc.

    • RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff

I just want to say that going through counselors/therapists isn't actually a bad thing. Just because they may all receive similar training or focus on similar therapies doesn't always mean that a particular therapist is going to be the best one for you. I've been to five different therapists/psychiatrists over the years, and only in the last few have I found a mental health team that has been able to really help me work on the really hard stuff.

Please don't be discouraged if circumstances or personalities don't align. It just means you haven't found the right person yet. Keep trying!
