    • RE: Suitable system for a gritty fantasy game

@Thenomain For sure. Despite my username, I've ironically played way more AW & PbtA games (mostly Dungeon World and Monsterhearts) than I have Fate.

The unique nature of each PC is certainly an obstacle, although some lend themselves more easily to being "one of many" (e.g., choppers or gunluggers) than others (how many hardholders would be unsustainable? probably even a single one for a MU*).

For me, I think one of the other big obstacles is making sure players feel empowered to contribute to the game world by inventing details (whether in the role of player or MC) that can then be used by others. A wiki is an easy way to try and help everyone keep tabs on this, assuming the playerbase buys into its use. But I don't know if they would.

@Thenomain Part of me recognizes that limitation and moves on to consider other rulesets. Part of me wonders whether more than 2 people would ever play on this game anyway. (But then the issue becomes the extent to which players would or should take on per-scene MC duties...)

If I thought the PbtA engine was in any way translatable to MU*ing, I would be all over Fallen Empires (http://apocalypse-world.com/AW2ndEdFallenEmpiresPreview.pdf).

I'll note I'm also not necessarily opposed to something like FS3 either, but I wanted to try and get a sense of what the most recommended systems might be.

@Kairos Yep--I was definitely trying to get a sense of the options beyond Fate (especially since it seems to put off quite a bit of the MU* crowd; I figured I'd try a different route than my own preferred fallback).

Is there a fantasy version of the NWoD system? Like a NWoD Dark Ages or whatnot?

@Ominous Thanks for mentioning Runequest. I have the rules for RQ6 from an old Bundle of Holding but I completely forgot about that system's existence. I'll read back over it for consideration.

@Lisse24 DriveThruRPG has a preview PDF of the basic rule mechanics. An initial skim suggests it's interesting, but I'll definitely have to read up further on it. If the entire rule set is only available in print, though, that could be a significant obstacle to adopting it.

    • Suitable system for a gritty fantasy game

I jokingly posted "Ill Met in Novigrad?" in another thread about games we'd like to play on, and it's made me realize how much I, like some others, would love to see a dark and gritty fantasy (non-Lords & Ladies) game, whether it's based on the Witcher, Lankhmar, or whatever.

So, I find myself wondering what sort of system might work to support the development of one.

I've been a fan of Blades in the Dark, but I don't think that would scale well (working with the laughable presumption that more than 0 players would ever check this hypothetical MU* out).

Zweihander is a WFRP 2e retroclone that might work well, but it may be too crunchy (maybe?) for some. Also, there's lots of assumed PC death that MU*ers may not want to deal with.

      Thoughts?

    • RE: Coming soon: Lawless Space MUSH

I am still working on this, although my activity has dropped a bit during the semester. I'm hoping that in the next few weeks, as classes end, I can dedicate enough time to tighten this thing up for a "beta open" to see what all needs to be smoothed out.

So, get your most awesome, gonzo, and ridiculous sci-fi character ideas ready.

@Thenomain Josie & co. do show up in "Afterlife with Archie," and it's spectacular.

@Thenomain @VulgarKitten In all seriousness, "Afterlife with Archie" and "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" are two of the best horror comics out right now. https://afterlifewitharchie.com/

Edit to add a few more recommendations:

      The Autumnlands
      Criminal
      Fatale
      The Flintstones (yes, seriously)
      Monstress
      Saga
      Southern Bastards

Do you have a local library system that would let you use something like Hoopla to check stuff out digitally for free?

@Cupcake Right on. I have nothing to do with the game--merely reporting that it exists for anyone looking for that sort of theme.

@surreality There's a game called Coral Springs that pretty much does the "Xavier Academy but not" approach: http://coralsprings.wikidot.com/

There was considerable interest in OC-only superhero games (compared to games with FCs) when I asked a similar question: http://musoapbox.net/topic/1026/what-would-a-superhero-game-need-to-be-do-to-bring-in-a-new-player-base

    • RE: Dresden Files Accelerated: Enough impetus for a new DF game?

@Kairos I have a similar sense that it's a bit more accessible and MU*able. DFAE also has some clear inspiration from a few of the PbtA games (such as how they've implemented Conditions), which I admit I am a huge fan of.

However, I have not played on Dark Spires, so I am not so well-versed in what the likely player population would be like or what sort of broader DF-related MU* history/archaeology would influence possible interest (or lack thereof) in a DFAE game.

@Three-Eyed-Crow Good point--I suppose I should have mentioned its existence in my post. It makes use of the older DFRPG system and seems to have a decent amount of regular activity.
