@Thenomain said in Sensitive cultural/political/religious aspects of game themes.:

If that is the situation, absolutely. People who are disrupting the game need dealt with, on a sliding scale. "Criticizing the drapes" as a comparison doesn't work. You may have poured blood, sweat, and tears into building a game, but the minute you advertise the opening it's no longer your home.

This is where I disagree with your analogy with the club.

In my opinion, as anecdotal as it is, there is no difference here. Club or home, it is still your property and you (the game owner) have the duty, responsibility, and privilege of setting the rules for staying therein.

If you want to be a raging cunt about what behavior triggers the ol' Monty-Burns-Boot-To-The-Butt, that's your prerogative. Places like this exist to mock, ridicule, and criticize that behavior. To-wit: Kushiel's Debut's apparent positions.

We don't disagree that dealing with people is a sliding scale, and that we ought to be judicious about it. My point with the drapery is that there is trivial criticism and PHB criticism, and the swath of degrees in between; to this point, we seem to agree. My point with the club analogy is as above; to this point, I don't know if we are in agreement or not, but we generally agree more than we do not.

I feel that This is a bad comparison. It's like starting a club and not allowing your members to criticize the decor.

A club depends on its members for its continued existence. This is not necessarily the case for a game, which can continue to operate even with a small, select population of folks who enjoy the theme, the setting, and the rules.

It's usually a good idea to be warm and inviting, and not flip the fuck out on people that criticize your drapery; however, when people are screaming at the top of their lungs after you've asked them to keep the noise to a dull roar, I wouldn't begrudge the game owner to forcibly remove the rabble.

Throwing someone's dissatisfaction in their face is not good behavior.

It's also not good behavior to step into someone's house and begin to criticize their décor.

I like Couch 2 5K. It's a great app. Sadly, I can't breathe when I run. Seriously, my lungs are like NOPE and just shut down.

Do you take albuterol sulfate for asthma symptoms? If so, you may want to move to a nebulizer.

I have heat-induced asthma. That is, when my body temperature is up, I'm more prone to an attack. This may be what you have. I discovered this because: (1) running is more difficult in hot weather; (2) running is easier in colder weather; and (3) I can swim the shit out of a pool. That said, I moved up from an inhaler to a nebulizer, and used the nebulizer before working out. Night-and-day difference.

If you can't run due to this form of asthma, walking is great. It is excellent. Also, consider doing high-rep, low-weight dumbbell training. You can do it while sitting, and you can build up a good sweat doing it.

You know, it is actually possible that "create the game that you want" is precisely what @surreality is doing…

What I'm seeing is a lot of people bitching that it's not the game they want.

That you are even acknowledging your dog having an issue and working towards taking him/her back to obedience training (or to initial obedience training) immediately puts you head and shoulders over 80% of the dog owners I personally know. Its disgusting and sad, but I honestly know more people who would rather let their dogs chew up all their furniture/get into things than take a few hours out of their tv watching schedule to get their dog properly trained. And it drives me nuts.

Remove the word "dog" and put in "kid," and you have my complaint about parents.

And, yes, I believe that obedience training can work for kids.

So... I walked 2 miles and called it. I actually consider this a success. So is anyone else trying to get healthier? Trying to eliminate debt? Trying to live on the cheap? Those are all my 2017 things. So if so, let's support each other.

I decided to go hard this year running, and brought myself up to 3.5 miles in about two months.

Then, my fascia tore. It hurt to walk. A lot.

Go slow. Go real slow. I'd do 1 mile every other day to start. My partner used an app called Couch Potato to 5K, or something like that -- it's totally worth it.

    • NOLA: The Game That Care Forgot

      Wiki: http://nola.orcpie.fun/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
      Game Address: nola.orcpie.fun:2018

Welcome to NOLA: The Game That Care Forgot

NOLA is a game set - perhaps not entirely unexpectedly - in a city very similar to New Orleans, Louisiana. It is in the same geographical location, it bears the same name, and much of the same history. The staff of NOLA love the real-world city, which is why we've chosen to set it in this particular place - but it is based on that city, only, and does not seek to replicate it exactly. The New Orleans of this game is one where you do not need to know all the details (although they certainly help), and if something's slightly off (whether on staff's side or players') we won't stress about it too hard. It is, after all, a game we're playing. If most of the nation wouldn't blink at an inaccuracy in a television show based in New Orleans, we certainly won't stress about it here.

The main theme of our game is one of a melting pot. In New Orleans, the supernatural world doesn't have any sharp lines of division. Where the supernatural ends and the mundane begins is a fuzzy question in a world with mortals who can sense the things that walk in the darkness, read minds, and light things on fire with their brains. In a world where vampires and werewolves claim overlapping territories, alliances and rivalries will form across the lines of the species. Vampires, Werewolves, and Mortals all interact in New Orleans as part of a greater community, bound under the Shadow Accords that govern the expected ways in which alliances and disputes will be handled.

The Spheres available on NOLA are Vampire, Werewolf, Changeling, and Mortal. Mortal characters can be pure Human, Hurt Locker Templates (except Dreamer), Wolfblooded, Ghouls, and Fae-Touched and can undergo Becomings into any supernatural sphere. Human characters who meet certain (not difficult) criteria may be considered a part of the Shadow Accords, and become eligible to take part (relatively) safely in the world of the supernatural, including membership in vampire coteries, werewolf packs, changeling motleys, or mingled cabals.

NOLA is open again. Beast is no longer available. Our wiki is STILL unfinished. We've probably still got bugs. There's probably new ones. And yes, we'll allow Bloodlines...as soon as someone steps up to be a Bloodlines Gremlin and do the research, data entry, and wikiwork. That means yes, we're hiring staff if you want to sign up. Also: we will allow SotC content as soon as someone's willing to go over the work that's already done and finish up the data entry. It's not hard work, I've just got a weird mental block about it and I've been letting it keep me from re-opening for too long. No, we didn't scrap the Accords - they're still there. The NPCs are still in place, we didn't scrap those either. Hell, Beasts are still in the city - they're just NPCs and unavailable for character creation.

TL;DR: A CofD 2e game with Vampire, Werewolf, and Humans set in New Orleans where everybody's up in everybody else's business.

I had a very good experience going through the character generation process. I can recommend it for folks who want to play within a cool theme and setting. Staff is really helpful and communicative as to what they want to see, which is a plus.

Unfortunately, I think the universe's tropes are a little too narrow for me.

They're on the restricted list. I do love me some urban fantasy. I have to read the first book quick to see if it's of interest.

The restriction is on couples who are parabatai. My understanding is that parabatai ate forbidden from entering romantic relationships with one another, despite the close "love" bond that they form.

I haven't spoken to him since, and it's #4 in particular that hurts because it's clear he doesn't see how badly he hurt me or how toxic what he said is.

You can't really force him to accept that he is being an insensitive asshole.

This really isn't trivial. It is an indictment of his sensibilities.

Don't take advice from me, though. I'm not exactly shy with cutting ties with people.

I'd never played Starcraft before. Rather than giving me any modicum of a tutorial, suggestions, or even 'play single player for a bit and then join us,' they brought me into their games... refused to answer my questions, crushed me, and then made fun of me for it.

This one time, my buddies got me to play Battlefield 1942 on a LAN. Never played it before.

Best game ever for newbs. Even if you don't know what you're doing, thrrr's something fun in pounding a shore with battleship guns.

I think of it more this way: when I meet someone (well, would meet, married now so it's not an ongoing process in this particular respect), my first thought is not: "Do I want to spend the rest of my life with this person?" and never has been. That thought never even begins to emerge until I determine if they're worth hanging around with in the first place.

Then I think your thought process has diverged from the thrust of the reddit thread at issue.

That said, examining at the known quantities and qualities are useful determinants as to whether I even want to invest time in hanging around someone. While there are certainly people I would hang with and never be with, and vice versa, the relationships that have withstood the seven-year mark have been those where their quantities and qualities meshed well with what I wanted in a friend/lover.

My bed-hopping days are over, but they were wasted days in retrospect. I do wish I had taken that time to discover people that I could be bed-buddies with and share intelligent discourse.
