    • RE: Games? Do they exist? Where?

@Auspice said in Games? Do they exist? Where?:

The last time I'd looked into opening a game (before SGM), I had a whole bunch of people jump up offering to help Staff. But because Faraday has done such an excellent job with Ares, there's not a terrible amount of overhead needed once things are moving.

So every person who offered, I told: I will be requiring every Staffer to run plot.

And every single one backed out.

So. I'll volunteer for a bunch of games where the concept is something I kind of want to play on, but I am up-front about EXPECTATIONS. Specifically... if you want a queue monkey? Someone to sit down and handle more +jobs than every other staffer combined, so long as they are:

      1. Equipment
      2. XP spends
      3. Some build request that isn't code-intensive
      4. Character generation
      5. Maybe some other stuff, I dunno

Then I'm your staffer. This is the shit I did on Shadowrun: Denver.

How do I know I did more +queue/+job work than every other staffer combined? Staff-side of Shadowrun: Denver has the single greatest motivator in the modern world:

      A LEADERBOARD

Plots? I mean. I would give ideas to other players to run plots. Or I'd sit my staff-bit in a plot room to witness it all as it unfolded, and then reward the players instantly with their Karma and/or equipment loot (rather than have them go through the queue/job process of submitting said plot for review, and potentially a week-month wait for the plot log to be edited, submitted, reviewed by the first staffer to jump on the queue... who might then drop the ball for 1-3 weeks...)

Running plots? I'm pretty horrible at. Between my abysmally slow pose speed, tendency to fall asleep at the keyboard, and/or get distracted by... anything else going on around me... All that shit makes me pretty terrible at RP in general, let alone be in charge of running a plot.

Which is not to say that I will never run a plot. But it's got to be something I'm SUPER interested in. Gonna have Mummy? I got Mummy plot (ideas) for days. And hell, maybe even the energy to run them. Other stuff... dunno, it'll depend on specifics of a game or something, I dunno. Hell, it'll even depend on the turnaround time of chargen - my interest is fickle, and if I don't get to scratch the itch on my NEWEST, LATEST, MOST AWESOME IDEA quickly enough, I'll end up moping and probably not getting stuff done, anyway.

Oh, and my work schedule makes my availability just absolute shit. So that's a factor.

All that got rambly. Um. I'll just be over here, continuing to offer to focus on all the little stuff, leaving everyone else open and undistracted to do PLOT themselves.

@Auspice Cool, I am not going as crazy as I thought. Still. Dat wiki plan should still maybe be a thing.

@RDC We USED to have a 'all active games' thread somewhere, which I'll try to dig up (it may need updating, too. Didn't we want a wiki sort of placea? A new, freshly updated kind of MudConnector? I forget!)

But there's also Shadowrun: Denver, Star Wars: Age of Alliances, and Serenity is still up and kicking the last timeI glanced in their direction (and was shot down from trying to bribe someone for a copy of their space code, RIP)

ETA: Holy shit, that thread hasn't been touched in like. Over 4 years. What is time?

As mentioned in Smol Birb thread, would also accept non-space airship sort of fu. It will not be the perfectest spelljammer/eclipse phase/star wars sort of thing. But. It will haz boat.

Good lord please someone make a sky pirate game.

Question: Does it work if all the landmasses are floating sky islands and such and no one ever goes down to the surface below the clouds, or do skyships lose their pizzazz if everything is up in the sky?

Suggesting the Aeronaut's Windlass for Sky Boats. The ground is full of doom and things what will eat you. So Jim Butcher will probably explore it in book 3?

If no SPACE, the BTMux code could be kit bashed easier. MAYBE.

So let me ask, what are people really interested in:

      1. The time sink of cruising from Point A to Point B to kill time

      2. Something to do BESIDES RP that requires some planning/scheming to try to maximize benefits.

I guess why I'm asking this, is because if it's #2, you don't really need an 'advanced space system' to accomplish that, you just need a clever mini-game to do it.

The time sink of cruising from A to B is terrible. Space systems where you have to spam your own screen every few seconds are the worst. I think ideally, space would just be a set of rooms that you can move your ship through. Maybe ships have a set number of rooms they can do per fuel tank? I dunno, but I hate most of the space systems out there already that aren't as easy as moving your bit to another room.

On the other hand... I love them. :X

      Ditto.

Though we could do SOMETHING about having to spam yourself with scan/radar reports. HSpace 5 had a java plugin (which was tricksy to read, but it was totally a thing). The Battletech MUX had a similar thing, with countdown times for every weapon, and a real-time top-down hex map with terrain and shit.

Which... is significantly more than I am advocating for. But I mention it because solutions to the problems exist.

As this thread has me nerding out some more, I give to you A BASIC CALCULATOR!

      https://transfercalculator.com/calculator/index.html?e=egg

It's got brachistochrone trajectories enabled (Epstine Drive, y'all), so you can figure out your direct burns and one more prove that real time spehss is totally doable without FTL-foo. as of TODAY, it's 6.6 days to get from Earth to Jupiter at 1g, 12.1 days to do it at 0.3g. I really want to figure out a way to get this stuff done under variable accelerations, like... bursts of higher than 1g. But I'm zany.

@Darren said in Space Sim w/Economy:

If I thought people might actually play on it, I would dust off the code for my unfinished original sci-fi Evennia based game and start work on it again. Maybe restart it with a Star Wars theme since original sci-fi settings seem to be the kiss of death for MU*s.

Dude, I was just talking to @Paradox yesterday about all the ideas we've both had about using Evennia to build a space-sim game. But neither of us have the capability code-wise (that is a HUGE undertaking) to make it happen (and, I mean, we're having a great time running SGM).

I would support you 100% in doing this.

I won't say 100%, cause I gots to see how it works in play. I'll give a firm 93.7%.

The way it USED to work, was you had a... I forget. X minute cool down, per ton of cargo you were loading. Were you off-loading 5 tons, but also loading up another 10 tons? That's gonna take 15x minutes.

@Jennkryst @Auspice Age of Alliances does, in fact, have space trucking mechanics! Hyperspace speed mechanics that translate to real time between destinations on a pretty decently sized galactic grid. I think there's a bit of buy-in when it comes to getting into that system, though, but it seems like there's a healthy level of fluff to it!

(I haven't personally messed with it, but there's a huge number of people that do. I started play as a lowly Spacehand.)

The buy-in, I don't mind. As mentioned before, I fought my way through the whole process to unlock a force user like. Three separate times. I had my own garage of different ships, Val Kilmer Bruce Wayne collector style. I thorooughly abused the space trading system and amassed... probably the hyoojest fortune on the grid.

And they wouldn't let me spend any of it on like... cybernetics, or ship upgrades, or custom @dug ship stuff. Sooooo... I bounced to a different Star Wars game (and other genres) after all that.

All of which appears to be moot with changes to the system, per @Dropbear... probably a direct result of me doing my thing. Oh well.

@Auspice Age of Alliances has space and trading code (or it did, the last time I was active on it.)

@Joyeuse can probably tell us if it's still the case. HOWEVER, TariSpace is NOT a system I would suggest using, for several reasons.
