The answer, of course, is Dominos: BBQ sauce, Philly Steak, and Salami.

RE: Star Wars or Starfinder?
My biggest issue with Star Finder is how it brings the flaws of D&D to space. I dislike levels and vancian magic.
D&D-sque Fantasy in SPACE would be cool. I would play the shit out of Spelljammer. Buuuuut... like, I would need it to use some other, non-D&D-based ruleset. Cause boo levels.

@haven The game still exists, buuuuuut...

The Game Feb 14, 2018 ZombieGenesis
Well, I've fought with this for a while but I figure it's time to make it official; while I won't bring the game down I'm just not really as excited about the concept as I once was. If you have something you'd like me to add let me know, I'll see what I can do, but at the moment I have no intention to actively further development of the game. I know there's still some RP happening here and that's cool just know that this is where we sit for the time being. I apologize for any inconvenience, and who knows what the future will bring, but for now this is where we leave things. Thanks for your understanding.

RE: Skills and Fluff in WoD
If we want hyper realism for surgery, you will have plenty of teamwork dice and equipment bonuses and specializations and merits. So it's more than just Int + Medicine.
So....
ETA - If we want Hollywood realism (as is my suggestion, since it makes the most sense with other rules, too) then yeah, let whoever use whatever.
Edit 2 - without going too POLITICSy, remember that Ben Carson - the man who thinks the Pyramids were grain silos - is also a world class brain surgeon who invented at least one revolutionary surgical proceedure. So massive Int is not a requirement.

RE: Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)
So I started this thing, then got distraced by Rimworld for a few days, but now I am back!
@ganymede said in Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat):
@derp said in Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat):
If you want the kind of character that never blinks in the face of such things, then -invest in the stats that make sure you rarely lose those rolls-, and then when you do lose one, figure out why this time is different.
Super major peeve -- your character doesn't get extra stats/immunity based on backstory.
THIS. SO MUCH THIS. I just... I just want people to spend points to be immune to things, sheesh. And to remember that these are games.
@surreality said in Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat):
@kitteh said in Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat):
So if people want games with social rolls, game designers need to go back to the drawing board and 2.0 their whole concept of these game systems. Nearly everything we play is a WoD-clone, with the same stat-skill conventions and minimal focus on social stuff beyond 'maybe you can put one virtue and vice.' These arguments will always go back and forth fruitlessly under these conditions.
It does work both ways, though, in some respects: while there's some stat things that give you what are 'core ideals/drives/haven't decided quite what to call them yet', they can work 'against' someone, too. If someone took something like "I will not allow my children to come to harm," they get a big bonus to resist anything that'd make them do harm to their children.
Sorta like FATE?
@lithium said in Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat):
I just have to say, again:
FATE social combat:
[snip]
Still not sure why FATE gets so much hate honestly.See? FATE!
Um, I'm guessing because of the way that advancement and refresh works? That, or balancing powers being tricksy. I'm limited to Dresden and FATE Accelerated, and it's been literal years since I did anything with it, so ymmv.
FINALLY, I can't find the actual post to quote now, but someone else brought up the biggest point to me: we're all playing a game, not some hyper accurate reality simulator. Ammosexuals could go on about the Firearm skill being garbage... Coders could go on about the Computer skill being garbage... I could go on about how Expression for playing a Euphonium is garbage (by the way, it is utter garbage).
But no matter how many (City) by Night games are made, the games do not take place in the real world, and real-world things that might limit them such as backstory or personality have no place for affecting things. Use movie logic and accept that while something might be bullshit to you, your character might think otherwise.

Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)
Obligatory thread to cut down on off-topic discussion for Dark Age Vampire fun.
Firearms attacks with 5 successes are abstract, because we assume you aren't holding the gun upside down, pulling the trigger with your thumb while your eyes are closed (note to self: use this for future gunbunny).
Social dice rolls, meanwhile, are often opposed because of an assortment of reasons. The one I am going to discuss first involves similar assumptions: that a 5 success persiasion roll involves adequate body language, tone, facial expressions, reaction to social cues (possibly via an empathy roll), and... anything else I am forgetting. Social cues that people often do not include in their poses, so the cannot even be attempted to be responded to.
Further, we operate solely through a text medium. How many times a day do you see the words 'Text does not convey sarcasm'? I see it in nearly every discussion.

RE: Dark Ages Vampire -- Terra Mariana
@the-sands So... I just have to make Sally's concept 'Unbeatable swordswoman who can never be killed,' thus making losing physical combat or death a violation of my concept! Easy peasy.
This is probably getting to the point where a new social combat thread can be started, which I'll get around to. But if you MUST HAVE AGENCY ALL THE TIME, there can be merits that buff your social defenses. Take all of them, and accept that you no longer have the points to be One Punch Man in physical combat as a result.

RE: Dark Ages Vampire -- Terra Mariana
@ganymede said in Dark Ages Vampire -- Terra Mariana:
In either case, if the defender elects not to accept the outcome, the aggressor gains Beats (equal to his remaining Nerve or the Doors he took down); if the defender surrenders prior to the outcome, then the defender gets Beats (equal to her remaining Nerve or Doors).
Can players similarly elect not to accept the outcome of mundane physical combat?
Edit because spelling is hard.

@jennkryst At present I can't really see putting that much effort into a spaceship portion of the game.
Alas. The dream is delayed once more.

RE: Singularity: an Eclipse Phase Game
@the-sands I would be looking for the excitement of a highway drive combined with calculus!
More seriously, something not as complicated as Kerbal, but more than TSpace? HSpace was alright but crazy resource intensive, so ymmv.
You mentioned other settings with a similar feel, so I will second Altered Carbon with a dash of The Expanse

RE: World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings
Generic city by night sounds amazing. Add generic suburbia around it, and the follow it up with generic mad max/black forest/wilderness hellscape.
-
RE: Singularity: an Eclipse Phase Game
I would vote for one of the Venusian cities, but Mars is also cool. Temp rooms can always be used for 'out of town' stuff. My big thing, as always, is space minigame whee.
-
RE: Dark Ages Vampire -- Terra Mariana
Can Social Combat be compulsory? Because that would be amazing.
-
RE: World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings
Not to derail or tangent too hard, but I feel obligated to point out that the whole pack/alpha mindset keeps getting debunked and ignored. CARRY ON.
-
RE: World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings
@tempest Werewolf, like all games, does not function well when you just throw every book thing at a game and tell people to go forth with 0 ST input on a setting, hoping things will work.
Edit because spelling is hard.

I... maybe just totally had this mental image of Theno as the hottest girl in the strip club with all us MU*ers waving ones at him.
I might not be able to make it rain yet, but I can definitely make it hail.

There's actually an option in your user settings to switch these on mobile.
I tried it right after I posted and nothing happened. Will wait a bit and try again.

Stupid Hulu takes forever to add shows in full.

We are back to right side drop down (huzzah!)
