A lot of jobs have that little disclaimer line "You will be expected to stand for long periods of time and be required to lift and carry things" there needs to be a "You will be expected to read the documentation and ask for additional training if necessary"
Mob mentality whitelist/blacklisting is probably not a good thing for a hobby wherein there is enough drama to keep a forum running 24/7.
That short essay thing I have only ever seen on Haven and it was such a joke. There are only 2 possible outcomes really from that policy.
Player assigned essay is like lolno or fuck you or some variant of not gonna happen and they remain banned. The essay is basically just a way to ban someone but say oh but they COULD come back if they write an essay and I approve the essay but they won't. It's a neat little trick.
Someone writes an essay which does nothing to actually change the underlying issues and they just do another infraction. Public humiliation and banning are more or less the same thing. Black mark. So even if someone does the essay the odds of them enjoying anything resembling a normal play experience is very low and their chance of relapsing into the actions that got them the punishment is very high.
Also if someone gave me an essay that's the kind of silly nonsense that would almost make me think VPNing was justified which is what will really happen.
I think the real question might be less what is the responsibility of game owners. Each game owner is going to handle it differently and be motivated by a different set of circumstances. The real question is what is the standard community expectation of privacy. Only by establishing the norm can people be judged for deviating from it.
From what I've read it appears that unless someone posts a log to a website or the policy explicitly states otherwise people expect their RP to be private whether it's sexual or not. They also expect their @mails and pages to be private too?
Privacy in MUs is very misleading. Not only are you sending information to a server run by strangers but there is no means of recourse to preserve your privacy. Just like this forum I don't use a password here that links to anything important to me. I don't expect my IP to be private if the forum closes and the owner wants 5 dollars for selling the list of IPs and emails >_>
You can advocate for respecting privacy but there is still the reality that people should take actions assuming their privacy isn't going to be respected.
PS - I still find it odd that MUSH players expect game owners to be unable to see everything that happens on their games. I still just assume every command I enter include quit and RP posts gets saved to a runlog somewhere even though I've been assured in multiple threads that isn't how things work in MUSH circles.
Hey,
When I was theorycrafting with Ares on DigitalOcean I used the service where the developer of Ares would help you set it up and everything. There is also a discord you can hit up.
When you say manage your dual screens, what do you mean by manage? Also what is the name in case I too want a best of wallpaper thingy.
I mean you can argue that TS is to blame, but by the same token lets say that the NPC played by the staffer wanted someone to do something evil or betray something they have a close connection too. Not all characters or players are going to want to do something objectively bad or betray something they have a connection too. If we're trying to say that TS is just a facet of RP and the majority of the issues with it are player hangups than what would be the difference between those two scenarios?
Less chatty example
Example 1 - Player Character sleeps with NPC run by staff and gains advantage. Not all players would write out TS and thus they do not have this opportunity.
Example 2- Player Character murders their best friends puppy for NPC run by staff and gains advantage. Not all players would want to betray a friend or kill an animal even if using FTB.
TS dangerzone aside or maybe TS can be included... I'll try here we go.
You should never feel guilty about a consistent writing quirk that you utilize between your dialogue. As we have learned from here there is a fair few people who rely on pose/emits to get that information. Furthermore by being consistent in its inclusion when you tweak or play with it that becomes noticable and is a subtle cue you can provide to people you RP with regularly.
I tend to focus on eyes and manner of speech as my persistent 'filler' or quirk. I like people to be able to imagine what this character may be feeling as they talk even if it's a reserved character because then the non-standard responses stand out all the more.
Now for the smutty TS if you're vanilla all the time and you suddenly go into a, where do you want my thumb moment. Then they know either they did something really great or something is different about you!
What kind of PBs are bypass nopes, cliche ones like Jason Mamoa or porn star ones or what?
Over in RPI land it used to be a running gag that you could be a dirty commoner with scars, a missing eye, wrinkly skin and you would still get all the mudsex you can handle if you can RP well. It's a bit more pronounced in RPIs which have a survivalist element so you'd have these grungy travel worn characters and the tressy tress socialites. Yet the objectively better looking descriptions would lose out to these mangy messes of meat when it came to sexy times.
EDIT - Minor note RPIs don't use played by, so all you had was the description in most case. Some few people would commission character art.
No I get that I'm asking if the rhetorical answer is logging is bad or posting logs is bad.
Question
I log everything into a master log automatically once I start playing a game. Is people being uncomfortable with TS being logged because it might be posted or is it the actual thought of it being saved somewhere?
@HelloProject
Find trusted opinion(s) and have them look over or at least describe your work to them. After feedback and/or interest check in concept then consider how many people would you need to make this work? During this stage consider codebase since that will heavily impact the staffing required and some fundamental culture aspects.
If your trusted opinion(s) are positive. If you believe you have the staffing power to maintain it for the desired length of time. If you have an idea of which codebase you'd like then the next step is to setup a server, get hosting, read the wiki documentation to transition your google doc stuff to an alpha environment.
After PRP/Event Q/A with the players to see what worked, what didn't and if things felt the way you were trying to convey.
Agree, relevant information based on what a character could or would know via @mail or @emit/pose whatever means you use to convey it or a straightup ooc you would know this. I suppose when I said 100% IC, I meant no OOC planning or collaboration but you have to tell them what they'd know somehow.
EDIT - Like being spotted at a club on grid in public or your sweet leather jacket that was a gift was cut off you in a fit of passion. So that item is missing or gone. Not sleeping in the same room like normal, soandso didn't come home last night FYI.
The ethics of IC Romance and TS is all about managing expectations. If you're going to be 100% IC, you need to be 100% IC. If this means you're cheating and you have crazy hawt seches and have some hickies, you need to RP covering them up or they get spotted. If you're going to have OOC collab you need to be upfront. OOC collab means that you are writing a story together and just like writers in a meeting you're pitching ideas and discussing story threads. This includes any negative drama you want to explore. If you want to go some IC/OOC hybrid because you're chatting and coordinating playtimes and you banter a bit. You just need to be honest. Don't mislead your RP partner. If honesty leads to hurt feelings that sucks but you're not a creeper or abuser if you don't try and obscure or manipulate. You might be an asshole, but I think there is a fundamental difference between being an ass and victimizing your RP partners.
It's no biggie, I don't know who you are and it's solely my own pet peeve with MSB culture I guess you can call it that. I am a big advocate that for a hobby based on communication that players seem very resistant to just having a quick chat. Like if it devolves into fuck you and fuck you, sure that's bad and conflict can be anxiety inducing for people but... At least then you -know- it was intentional instead of a miscommunication of text/tone!
EDIT - I see now my usage of 'you' in the abstract is causing reading problems.
If you're going to name and shame someone on MSB, have the decency to at least try and speak to them directly first. I know a lot of people in the community have long 'relationships' from interactions on past games but many a time you'll see people going I had no idea, you could have just told me and they apologize and try to fix the behavior. Whether it's fixed in a longterm manner, iunno but you could always try and one on one it before you go for group shaming.
EDIT - Replace all variant of you and you're with people... That'll probably read better.
