I have a medical cannabis card because my state does that. It's for migraines, but I've seen strains labeled as helping with ADHD and thought that has to be nonsense (I have ADHD and have been on and off stimulant medication since diagnosis in high school.) HOWEVER as it turns out the pot for adhd thing wasn't nonsense. There are a few that get me focused as anything, and can get a ton accomplished.

yeah it's not nonsense at all. I smoked pretty regularly for like 15 years, and during that 15 years I had no : insomnia, migraines, anxiety (the cause of the former), and didn't feel nearly as overwhelmed/scattered.

I stopped smoking and everything fell apart

You definitely need tahini for the flavor/smoothness, but a big jar of that will make so many batches of hummus. Super easy and affordable to make if you have a high speed blender.

Good news: my psychiatrist is really smart and up to date on all the latest neuropsychiatry and pharmaceutical studies.

Bad news: anxiety and ADHD medicines do not play well together.

By "do not play well together," I mean that benzodiazapenes make ADHD worse by depressing all neural function, including the mesocorticolimbic projection, which is what makes dopamine, well, work as a positive motivator. And ADHD medicines hyperactivate the HPA axis, which regulates stress.

So I get to choose between extreme lack of productivity, which is starting to affect my job performance even if I've managed to keep it hidden from others, and extreme, unrelenting terror that makes life literally unmanageable.

Meanwhile my bosses have literally no idea of what's required for the imminently due deadline, keep telling me to take time off because they're worried about my mental health, and don't have the ability to help me do what needs to be done because they never reviewed any of the materials I sent them weeks ago in order to learn it.

I want to quit everything and cry for a week. The only good news is that I'm so terrified of driving that if I ever actually become suicidal I can just get in the car and go to New Orleans because I'm convinced the constant panic attacks will kill me. Boom. Instant exposure therapy.

Or, you know, death.

Hey- my psych (who is also wonderful) put me on viibryd for anxiety. It's an off-label use of a fairly new drug, but as she explained, they did testing for both depression and anxiety and found that it helped both equally...but only paid the money to get it FDA approved for depression, as that's a much bigger market and much more in need of innovation.

It's not a fast acting benzo like ativan or xanax or whatever, but after a few weeks on it, after we stepped it up to 40mg? I have ABSOLUTELY noticed an improvement in my anxiety. Even during the pandemic. Talk to your psych about it. I am lucky my insurance is good with scrips and knocks the price down but drs are usually given discount cards to bring it down to $15 a month if your insurance is not so tolerant. And - no real side effects, which is the most amazing part. I took 2 antidepressants for a couple weeks each and just could not deal with the exhaustion and other issues. None of that with viibryd, at all. The one time I missed a couple doses I got 'brain zaps' (which was terrible, ngl) but that's almost any AD medication.

sensory sensitivity is an ADHD thing, yes. I cut tags out of clothes, and I can't wear any tshirt or anything that puts even the slightest bit of pressure around my neck. Above my collarbone, really. I feel like it's choking me. Also, I chew my lips constantly. Which I never thought of as a symptom, before. OH BOY.

@faraday Ah, maybe I was reading a different meaning into gatekeepers. I find that no matter where you draw the line between NPC and PC authority, that is going to be the pain point.

If you have PCs who have IC responsibility and authority, it doesn't seem to matter much if they are the top of the line or somewhere in the middle. If they make decisions, they will get a lot of friction. If they try to impose consequences, they will get friction (and outright hate). If they don't distribute rp knowledge evenly, absolutely, and tirelessly, they will be accused of horrible things.

I wish I knew how to make people be considerate of each other, and not take everything as a personal slight when there are much more plausible explanations.

IMO the only real OOC responsibility of an IC leader is to do their best to enable instead of shutting down the RP of others, through being reasonably responsive and delegating with a permissive attitude within the boundaries of the setting.

This is actually one of my biggest problems with this idea of 'cancel culture'. Really, as far as I can tell, it's just capitalism in operation. If I don't like an author, I don't buy their books. If enough people do that, they become unprofitable. If a movie's themes don't interest me, or I have moral issues with some part of it, I don't go and see it. If a studio thinks that a certain theme won't make enough money, they just won't make the film.

No one's getting cancelled, they're just not making money.

Capitalism sucks.

my psychiatrist told me very quickly in my time with her that the 2 week/30 day things are myths. Habits actually take between 60-90 days to solidly form, for most people

@bored In Arx we offer equal (and often better) metaplot tie ins to commoner characters, and do not limit their interaction with the metaplot in any way. The larger world of Arx doesn't give a fig about a PC's title, in 99% of cases.

you look at someone in the eyes by focusing on one, or both, going back and forth (though not super fast, like a madperson.) I have never had any trouble with eye contact or addressing people, but that might be a quirk of anxiety for some people. Just not the way mine manifests.

How do you deal with the (obviously exaggerated) example I gave above though? The House Voice who's a combat-character, and thus has the authority (but not the coded skill) to be part of or even lead diplomatic missions because of their rank?

The short answer is, we are trying to design a system where ignoring the social status of yourself (your rep) and your house will begin to impact what Combat Joe the Voice wants to do. If you ignore prestige and never do anything diplomatic or work social angles, when you go to call your banners for war....well...

When you go to manage your domain and see the productiveness of your NPCs is shit and it's affecting your bottom line, you might start to think about delegating to and involving the social characters in your house.
