The answer is not to just not hire women. The answer is to make your employees behave professionally while they are at work (which tech monkeys famously often do not), and encourage female applicants.

@roz Yes, it was thought of as women’s work. Demand went up, and with it pay, and suddenly girls are discouraged from it starting in primary school. So weird.

It's just a fact that if you set a "not EVERYONE can play this but some people can" you are setting up bad feelings. Designing them into the game. I mean, it's no skin off my back, I'm glad people are having fun there. I myself would never darken the door of a game that has built in sexism again, just because I'm so done with it IRL.

But it does seem like, as has been hashed so many times, if there's an arbitrary restriction on # of badass outliers, no one is going to be truly happy with how those are distributed.

But why can't there be female fighters? Game of Thrones has tons of females who fight.

not to mention you can't let EVERYONE have fun, because the fun of one person is almost guaranteed to impact the fun of another person, likely negatively. For every freewheeling "FUCK THE RULES" char you approve, there's somewhere a player playing that char's authority figure in something that has to shoulder a lot of nonsense for that fun - to use an unrelated example.

I think it's fine to respect something you have at a 1 or a 2, but not something you have at a 4 or a 5 unless you are FRESH out of CG and messed something up - like not realizing skills are duplicates, or something. A little cleanup is fine but changing a core aspect of the character as you have played/built them is not, imo.

@faraday Different strokes, I guess. To me as long as the pb is superficially similar, change away. But changing the in game stats that are visual signifiers needs a story reason.

@roz - Sorry, yeah, I was talking about the first time somebody takes up a character. Once a roster has been played, then their PB/stats/etc. are fixed, as I mentioned before.

ETA: But that's just my personal philosophy. If you're going to allow a change of PB, I don't get why you wouldn't also allow a change of desc details like height/skin tone/etc. They go hand-in-hand in my mind.

because it's weird to have rpd with a character that is 5'5" and then suddenly a new player takes them and they want to be seven feet tall. It's immersion damaging.
