    • RE: Santa Rosalia

There have been a few glimpses of a staggeringly beautiful cove just south of Santa Rosalia - that isn't on any map, and people are heading out this weekend to find the place.

If you're looking for something to do on Saturday, we're just about to kick off a hidden cove plot - a little fun-in-the-sun (with mermaids!) for summertime storytelling.

      Suggested Concepts

While we're open to pretty much anything that fits within the theme, these are concepts that should easily find their way into ongoing plots.

      • Works With Plants - Someone who is into gardening, especially more holistically than scientifically, especially someone that would be interested in working as a groundskeeper at the Mission.

      • Park Ranger - A lot of story happens in Rosalia Forest. People are forever reporting things to some convenient NPC Ranger. You could be that character! Help keep the real authorities from getting involved.

      • Mission & Mission-Adjacent Characters - The Mission is a big part of life in Santa Rosalia. You can tie-in with the Mission as someone who attends Mass there, digs graves, plans events - lots of non-Catholic possibilities!

    • RE: Heroic Sacrifice

I feel like we had this conversation recently.

All it takes to get me to be willing to kill my PCs is that it's easy to create another one. If CG is quick and painless, if approvals happen quickly, I'm happy to play fast and loose with character mortality.

@faraday said in To OOC Room or Not to OOC Room (and Other Artifacts):

Ares also has a configurable option that ties the OOC lounge to a channel. I think that's preferable, because it lets folks who aren't in the lounge still participate in the chat, and it enables the other channel features like recall and abuse reporting.

This is what we do. It weirds people out the first time they talk in the OOC room and it winds up on the channel, even though the room desc says it does that, but they get over it.

    • RE: Monaco Bay Weyr at Pernworld Mush: Burn, baby... Burn?!

It's PernWorld. There is literally no more to know than this ad.

The game is "create character, go to whatever area currently has Search, RP there for 4-5 weeks, get a dragon, idle along with everyone else in the area since now they've all moved over to the next area with Search, rinse, repeat."

You'll probably get a few pages from squicky weirdos trolling for TS in among all that, but that's about as exciting as it gets. "Plot" is a term generally used loosely to imply "stuff we do around Hatching-time."

@Lotherio said in Web portals and scenes and grids oh my!:

If I see age old scenes in the active scene list, it turns me off too. I don't care if they take that long, but if I want a pose a day or longer, I can find a forum to play on. This is just my pref.

Admin can also set how long scenes are idle before they time-out. If someone is keeping them active with a pose within that time... nothing anyone can do, but - if scenes are sitting on games for days and days with no poses - it's because the game owner decided they wanted them there, not because Ares requires them to be there.

@Auspice Having a variable flag that allows scenes to stay open longer than an admin wants defeats the purpose, no?

If I want my game to favor live RP and not have aging scenes, I need to be able to make that decision as the admin. If you want a game that favors asynch RP and having aging scenes, you need to make that decision as a player.

That's kind of the root of my point: Ares isn't making these decisions; WE are.

But SimpleMU is my favorite. It's just now reached the point that most games take advantage of colors too much to stick with it. 😞

    • RE: What's So Hard About Ruby?

@faraday said in What's So Hard About Ruby?:

I think that's why people struggle a bit with the softcode->Ruby/Python transition.

For me personally, it's because I'm not a 19-year-old who can stay up all night long reading help files and learning to MUSHcode.

Maybe not for everyone else, but it's not that Ruby/Python/whatever else are any easier or more difficult to learn. It's that I learned to code MUSH because it was my hobby, back when my hobby was the central part of my life. It's not anymore.

My brain-juice gets used for RPing instead of learning to code. I'll stay up late to finish a really good scene, but I'm way too mature nowadays to stay up all night coding. That's for geeks.

    • RE: Gray Harbor Discussion

@Goldfish Is it? The last two "modern" games I played on prior to GH had at least one amputee on the grid. They seem to be a popular concept right now.

Also, we're not actually drowning in amputees (which is a gross mental picture). We just have more than one playing at the moment, and at least one of the players is quite active and has a character arc / story to tell that we'd like to let him explore, so we're just cutting off people with limbs cutoff for now.

So yeah. Don't turn up looking for a sea of stumps, or you will be disappointed.

So the question isβ€”do you focus on the years before the books? Do you venture into the after the Last Battle (wtf does that even look like)?

I like the "alt universe" version that puts the game back in the era of the books, but none of the PCs exist, and the Dragon is still out there. It just leaves the problem of men not being able to channel...

...but I think that's one of the cool thematic aspects of the world anyway.

It would be really awesome to be able to delete unshared scenes, though. My few false starts just hang out there, forever, and I haaaaaaaate it.

Oh, you know what - I stand corrected. You could at one point do this, but then I got concerned that someone might delete an unshared scene before the other players got around to downloading the log or whatnot. So I turned it off. Maybe I'll make it so you could do it if you're the only scene participant or something. I'll look into it.

      You can still do this.

      scene/start
%% Graham has started a new Open scene (837) here.
      scene/stop
%% Graham has stopped this scene. You can restart it at any time using scene/restart, but it will restart in a temp room and NOT in this room.
%% The scene has ended. To share the log, set the scene info (help scene info) and then use scene/share 837 to share it.
      scene/delete 837
      %% Scene deleted.

@Sunny said in Difference between an NPC and a Staff PC?:

The? No. It shows that it is A way to get story.

That's your opinion as a person that thinks inter-personal RP via staff NPCs is fine.

Mine (as someone who does not think it's fine) is that I just saw Sue get a cool new weapon because she went 18-holes with StafferBob, and I did not get anything because I don't enjoy that particular flavor of RP and didn't jump on StafferBob's putter.

I may be completely wrong and pettily jealous, but now I'm completely wrong and jealous over here, on a game where I'm more comfortable with how staff uses their NPCs.

Almost like watching the Weyrlingmaster spend 12 weeks TSing with the newest goldie instead of running story for weyrlings isn't fun! <.<

@Rinel said in Gray Harbor Discussion:

I like the Dark Men but I'm struggling with how to thematically have them pose a threat. In my last scene I wrote it so that their attention was displayed by a small area of woodland going totally still in the middle of an oncoming storm making everything windy, and a fog rising out of the forest edge. But I'm not sure if that's too physical for them?

Of course I can just retroactively have it be done by a shadowy human working for them, so it's not a huge deal, but it does have me wondering.

I think @Pyrephox gave you a good answer. They're meant to have the meta, OOC knowledge that you as a player have about your character - what buttons they can push to scare/sadden/anger your toon. If the forest suddenly going eerily still freaks out your character? Then they're happy.

As for physically hurting someone... They can do it in Dreams, or they can lean on people in the real world to get them to do it for them (this has underpinned the Billy the Ghoul plot), or they can just not inflict actual physical harm.

If you're having troubles or want to bounce ideas, I highly recommend pinging on the Questions channel or forum on the game. We have a lot of really friendly players that are cool about brainstorming. πŸ™‚

Yep yep. It will say "Unshared Scene Deletion Warning," or something to that effect. On GH, unshared scenes will hang out for 90 days; you get the warning after 83 days, so you have a week to download it.
