Quick follow up. We'll look at a build nexus in ooc rooms. This would allow insertion of places by players as well as ambiance without requests. More creativity. Their is an in game version of +view as well, could add individual item descriptions too even. We'll see about getting something set up along that route.

Oh I agree that the struggle to survive should be a part of the game. But I think you need to address that in a fun and interesting way if you want people to engage with it. Computer games (not just MUSHes) have been trying to "force" people into menial tasks since the beginning. Players as a general rule hate it. They avoid it whenever humanly possible and they resent it when it's not possible to avoid. If you can make a survival mini-game fun for the majority of the population, or if you can figure out a way to make "foraging for berries" interesting, then as @Thenomain said, there's no reason not to go for it.
The popularity of Minecraft, Subnautica, Day Z, Ark, and Don't Starve contradicts your supposition that players avoid menial tasks.
Compare Minecraft to the big old grind of Final Fantasy 1 on NES.
Minecraft is immediate return, chop up wood, get stone, make a house, go get more, make something bigger. But its immediate return, getting 1 block isn't a long task and you can affect the game world significantly with little effort.
Final Fantasy, 10-20 hours to reach level 40 for the only significant change in the game. You're tiny guy icon gets a little bigger. Weapons change, but its more like white sword is level 1, blue sword is level two and hours of grinding to get there.

@aria LOL Not only that but, how were they flying the planet around to different suns again?
Then Han Solo showed up to fly it faster, 12 parsecs on the Kessel run. This super fast glitterstim run was observed metaphysically by force users and confirmed to be true. Qui Gon convinced a sentient sub atomic species to verify the accuracy of these results.
Just a heads up, that server has gotten a little spotty (its the Rhost Mu server, a few of them are in semi-retirement). We will work to get it on Silvertree, the host has backups and long lasting batteries for power outtages and keeps us better informed. Sorry for inconveniences.

What's fun and worthwhile, though? Before Minecraft, would many of us have honestly thought that a game about digging would be one of the most popular games of all time?
Yes. Minecraft was inspired by a prior digging game, Infinimier. They are sandbox collection games. Ever played Elite, a space trading/collection (money), where it literally took hours to fly between systems to conduct trade? I enjoyed this, but if I want to play it now, I play Oolite, an updated version created by fans with faster space travel. Collecting games have given rise to the current trend of Idle/Incremental Games; some of the older ones were just poking fun at grinding collecting games even.
Newer games are cutting down on the boring grinding parts by offering other things to occupy the gamer, as mentioned, like mini-games.
As a Polish-American that enjoys a good Polka, I fully endorse The Polka King with Jack Black. Based on Jan Lewandoski's story, the portrayal of Polka folks in the movie is humorous at times. Makes me want to bust out my satin windbreaker with eagle embroidered on the back and polka.
A funny running gag in the movie is every time they ask him how to pronounce his name and he says however they like, cause he doesn't care. I do the same, now I see how it might be frustrating to someone asking and not getting the correct pronunciation of the name.

What are some features that you feel like made finding RP easier, or improved the quality of life playing there, that you wish other games had?
I'm curious about the miniggames, but this is above and beyond and I'm really curious about this one in particular. Could be its own topic, just wanted to put that out there. Its not minigame specific, like setting RP flags to highlight names in who/+who lists. I like to include a global @wall like command at my MUs for opening a scene, allows people to announce a starting scene to get more interest if they like but not really a minigame.
Actual minigame that I still tend to play ... bowling on modern MUs. Fun to play and pose around, winning or losing. Scavenging on Survival places is fun at the beginning but tends to lose its steam without updates to what is found to be relevant to locations being searched or new locations in genera.
New show on tonight. Ima check it out, Olympic or something.
Looks like lots of falling on ice so far
Its a server side error in writing to the backup somehow. If you are logged on already on the portal, you're still logged in but can't access DB things like chat or scenes. If you logout you won't be able to log back in. Its being looked into.
I think, and could be wrong here, that the +scavenge code referenced isn't a necessity to eat or find potable water.
The one's I've seen that were enjoyable were added as an RP booster. They might find interesting food (twinkies in the wrapper still) or other odds n ends, location dependent such that scavenging a house might turn up a first aid kit, but scavenging in the forest might find murshrooms or some old junk. Just it was never a scavenge or die implementation. Again, only from the times I've seen them and enjoyed them. But similar to the Cheese Hat, which is sort of what I was getting at in that scavenging on survival places is fun, they need updating such that the same odds and ends don't keep cropping up. On the place I used it most, plastic model (car or some such) cropped up, it was a novelty until everyone had one to build and couldn't find model glue. Its a simple fix too, instead of just generic list, fun unique things could be pulled from a word bank and removed as they're found.
John Harrington is a known historical figure; his invention is the forerunner of the modern flush toilet. Other than being saucy, his greater body of work was political/theological/philosophical in nature.

Maybe somebody should split this off into a Travel Times thread so we don't spam the poor OPs ad too much?
The discussion relates to length of enforced travel and how much/what should be enforced. It was in relation to space, but I'm sure most of us have seen it 'enforced' on non-space, non-coded games (ie, the travel time by horse from Y to Z is 2 weeks please don't abuse this).
I'm in the camp that does not prefer travel times in favor of RP and hand waving if needed. Though on the other hand if the system has some coded trade/travel minigame and uses travel time to limit how fast one becomes wealthy with the system (and the avid player of such a system usually does), I can see its use. But ... only if a sidestep is available. The cargo ship can take hours/days to get between planets/cities/ports to enforce a limit on coded wealth gain, but the average player not interested in playing a trade simulation should have some means to bypass the coded travel time. SW1 eventually had shuttles, they reduced travel time but cost a minimal amount of in game credits; I think that was to prevent too many hops in one week from the average player? Otherwise, the ships better have some means to RP without keeping folks out of the RP part of the MU (enough players traveling together to continue RP).
The Realms Adventurous is a game of high fantasy, low magic, set in the time of King Arthur Pendragon. Utilizing the rules of the same name, we seek to follow the dynastic stories of knights and their families, the nobles and ladies of the courts. Chargen is open to members of other classes, commoner and clergy alike. We plan to have regularly scheduled events aside from just feasts and tournaments, but these will occur regularly as well. If you want to partake in knightly adventures, mystical quests, battles of conquest and glory, and possibly indulge in courtly intrigue, we may have what you seek.
We are currently opening for alpha phase play. The systems are still being hammered out, but chargen is up and running and basic systems allow for play already. Our center of play is in line with the core rule book, we are focused on the county of Salisbury and our PC knights and nobles will be vassals of Earl Robert, son of Roderick de Salisbury. We start play in 514, on the heels of Arthur’s victory over Lot and the twelve renegade kings. It is the eve of his wedding to Gwenevere as we begin play.

I remember the instant travels when 'action' happened, wasn't just Space/Star Wars places either. Folks could be in Kingdom Y that was 4 days hard ride from Kingdom X on fantasy/historical place and if something happened and they got pages from friends at the start, they'd make the jump. I do agree free travel sees this abuse, like the western and someone jumping between Dodge City and St. Louis to follow the rp. I remember it being like Dodge City is daytime active and St. Louis is nighttime active, and the 24-hour player would go events at both places too. I think that sort of abuse needs to be addressed, but like the 2-3 times a week or less player, I think hand waving is fine for then they log in after logging off in Dodge City and the active group they play with all spend some time traveling to St. Louis.
Mechanical penalty and/or travel resource sounds good (SW1 used credits for the free shuttle service to limit travel and jumps by non-cargo ship players; ie gain 300 credits per time period, it allowed 5-6 jumps until 'payday' again). Curious how it would work out without someone ending up penalized, if its only resources for travel what is the limit? X trips per time period, cap on how many such resources are banked to prevent someone from banking for 3 months then all of a sudden jumping halfway across the globe/galaxy 5 times in one day?
NERDS Y'ALL NERDS we want to chitter-chatter about the things we like, don't like, and argue about incessantly, but let's also try to be considerate of others,
Had to comment on this, didn't belong in the spoilers discussion.
But this, right here. I get it we like to argue over who knows more about comic book continuity or are deep lore of LotR accumulated from quotes, interviews and other sources beyond the books but ... for the love of whatever your faith is ... stop talking about geek lore during the movie at the movie theatre on opening weekend. I want to appreciate the film for what it is, regardless of differences from the book or deviations made to fit it into the 2-3 hour time slot given for the 'movie' frame of reference. Heck, even if its been out a month and its late night and its you five and me and my five up front only, don't talk about it during the movie at the movie theatre. I'm sure the person your correcting doesn't appreciated it and I and my friends sure as hell don't appreciate you spouting off and ruining or viewing experience (whether some of us would agree with what you're saying). We're not filming a live movie review, we're trying to watch.
I would like to see an OTT/multi game/genre Mu* that uses a home brew version of the recent'ish 6d6 system (http://tinyurl.com/j8a2mxo) that is balanced towards a mu* environment. Because I might want a western one day and Hong Kong Action the next.
