If you absolutely had to choose one or the other?

Mecha merc, but hopefully something less crunchy, so I don't have to learn a complex system and then have someone laugh at me the day after approval cause I'm going to fail in combat or I didn't min max and max and am irrelevant as a merc for hire.

@lotherio So for a foreign noble savage type of concept, it'd have to be someone married in at his point I take it, since you have to pick a house?

You don't have to be in a house, sorry if that seemed like a requirement. We have one married in from another land and someone with a merc company. We do have a commoner in the works too. But another noble could certainly be in town without marriage. From seeking alliances with Matoran houses, to asylum from troubles back home and anything in between.

Ares is a good option for asynchronous play, and if you find time can still dig up synchronous RP.

Forum-wise, RPG Directory is a forum for posting ads for various forum/pbp RPs. Like Mud-Connector. It seems to have a few Mu* folks that no longer mu for their own reasons.

@faraday said in Web portals and scenes and grids oh my!:

      Private != asynchronous.
I could log into a TinyMUX game and get put off because there's never any RP to be had because everybody's off in their private apartments or RP rooms.
Nobody's being treated as second class there.

I know what asynchronous means, this is more insulting. My fault, my dyslexic brain put the two together, but lots of private scenes and/or lots of month old scenes still going with days between poses are in the same group, even if different definitions.

If I go to TinyMUX or Penn and see private scenes the same, I'll leave them too.

If I see age old scenes in the active scene list, it turns me off too. I don't care if they take that long, but if I want a pose a day or longer, I can find a forum to play on. This is just my pref.

    • RE: Coordinates-based Grid

I couldn't tell you who all has done what. I can't tell you how easy/difficult it might be going from hardcode MUD to Python for use in Evennia.

I enjoyed Nightmare LP Mud, one of the last places using a similar skill/class based system is Haven. Its not active but staff still hang out. The main grid is traditional, room/exits all interconnected, but they updated to a virtual ocean and there is a large island out on their massive globe that is coordinate based. It could be something similar, it could be completely different. You're welcome to visit them and chat it up I imagine: http://haven.havenmud.com/.

Coord-based grid isn't new. It was more widely used on space games, mostly Star Wars as far as I know (and I don't know much). The A-Space, C-Space, H-Space and other variations, meant to possibly allow up to infinite space with minimal DB usage. They're still out there as far as I know, most on github. I do believe some were converted from 3D-virtual space to 2D-virtual ocean space. I don't know if any have been converted to land/continent but don't imagine that's much more than a change in the configuration.

Here a quick google search: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_system_(gaming) - links to code repository where they are currently stored.

Looks like most include things like range as well. I am not certain, never played it, but The Greatest Generation may have had something similar (help account for bullet travel between 'rooms'). Heck, even FS3 includes some range code that may seem out of place, but joining a combat in progress can be done regardless of rooms so the potential to go coordinate or more open grid was probably thought of in the design as well.

I think its to say, it has been done and can probably be looked at, altered or used to inspire new coordinate-based grids. A main reason I think they're not popular is due to it being linked to vehicles and travel times?

There is a distinct lack of turtles despite the rich theme on them. I think we all have a hankering for a turtle, especially a more bitter one.

If I sit in an open public scene by myself, it feels like the whole game can see it (and point, and laugh).

I'll say it, we've only had a few scenes, but sitting on grid or announcing an open scene, anyone should get into that location or scene, you're great fun to RP with.

I'd play it. I enjoyed Battletech to no end. Not the game versions with meta-plot at all, I enjoyed Battletech 3065 Mux, which was just get in a 'pod' load up a 'mech' and play a virtual combat against other's in pods/mechs. Earn credits, by bigger Mechs, rinse and repeat. I had way too many hours of fun doing that, but as @faraday mentioned, people got over it. Old dino's left for other fun, new players didn't have the patience to learn 12 different HUD displays, aliasing in game to get fast readouts when tics mattered, using favorite Mu*client to spawn multiple windows to read it all at once, and just fast keying to move, change speed, conduct jumps, turn torso, keep an eye on relative location of enemies and chat in team chat to keep coordinated (and being yelled at by vets when you messed up).

I'm leaning into a character. I'm debating between joining an established House, or picking up Zanetti as weapon manufacturers (cannon, swords, gunpowder, etc) provided they're in theme.

But the A sisters also seem hella fun. Torn!

The A sisters are a thing for sure, hella or scary fun, not sure yet but ...

Its hit or miss on cannon and gunpowder - smaller canons are starting to see use, the first major battle they are noted for their use is about a decade or two out. Firearms (shoulder canons 🙂 ) will be recorded in Russia soon against an upcoming mongol invasion in a few decades.

Weapons are good, I'd like to preserve the Merc companies and their generic history - they get all war art/strategy and keep using heavy cavalry while other nations over the next century develop firearms until the Condottieri are so old school, the horses fall pray to halberds and muskets. While not accurate to the time so much, the battle in Borgias where they're stunned by cannons in 1495 is sort of a nod to this (they all know about cannons, some of the Visconti of Milan write about them in mid 14th-century and their effectiveness on a battlefield).

That said, what could be a good RP hook/concept is that the family is starting to research this gunpowder stuff like so many others to go from canon to firearm and such. The other nobles might not like the occasional explosions from House Zanetti, but they'll have to just get over it by the Paragons.

I approve of anything with cards (look I own like, 80+ decks okay).
But I'm not sure on the Victorian era setting.

Then don't. It's just a setting. CF can really be applied to any time or place.

But cards are important. I think random PCs + random cards = fun and mayhem. Make it a wacky post-apocalyptic world where your enemies are robots, but not cool Cylons or deadly IG-88s, but instead WALL-Es. Nothing but WALL-Es.

Your enemies are also cannibals, mutants, or paramilitaristic mobile home living pink flamingo on the lawn gangs led by Tim Thomerson.

@icanbeyourmuse I am with you, I like grid over temp rooms myself. I like a grid I can explore. I like sometimes adding hidden exits with clues in the desc to get to more things for fun. I like the rooms setting tone or mood for RP itself. Being able to jump off grid from the desolate swamp and making the temp room 'happy meadow' as a location in that swam can ruin immersion for me. Just an idea to consider, best of luck with your decision.

@seraphim73 Suggested reading is good we'll get a few more front page links.

Anyone offering a template please use wikidots active/dynamic template not just fancy include. Down the road we can use template info to organise and sort player lists. Like the info on families page, we can sort and organize by things like political affiliation if we want, we can't pull include info into indexes like that.

      @mietze said in Player Omsbudsman?:

I also have to admit I'm exceptionally unlikely to want to play on a game that is so administrative/bureaucracy heavy that would be necessary (needed because of the volume/large staff dynamics, rather than disinterest) or an admin team on a small game where nobody was capable of communicating well or being able to assist with mediation to the point that a person had to be brought in specifically because it was such a problem.

Especially the latter. I can see the value in the former though.

      These I both agree with.

The small one that needs an extra staff to help communicate, I hate to say but better not to staff if you can't get along with the people you want playing your game (cynical but thought provoking). A large one that has someone to help I can see, but I usually don't play on staff deep games.

A month or so ago we talked about needing code to track everything staff touched for clarity. I don't agree with needing that much oversight, but if a game was so big, I can see the ombudsman being helping players with little things like 'what happened to my job' and such. Just, I don't see it as too helpful though, if I can't go to my sphere/faction/etc staff to find out or a head admin, I'm only going to see ombudsman as another hurdle.

If I see a big hierarchy of staff, I'll be more reluctant all around.

I think another distinction is in control and thrust of theme and whats happening in play. For me, I am of the mindset that tone and direction are set and controlled by staff. I know for others players come in and give direction and shape things, maybe for such a place as this, but that's not for me. If I have a place and folks don't like direction they voice their opinion by leaving or GOMO. If I don't like the direction of a place (not saying dislike of staff but dislike of theme interpretation), I don't get made at staff. WoD ref, if I want to play a Setite (cause its the only splat book I ever got) and the game only wants me to be haitian, wearing shades, selling all things for sex-fetish or whatever, I'll leave for difference of opinion not go off saying they're doing it wrong. Its their game, they have a vision, my want to play a character doesn't agree. I wouldn't take it up in with other staff, 'hey there are some isms for Setite sphere I'm not comfortable with, can we change this' I'll just assume they have a plan in place and I don't agree with it.

So for me, I wouldn't see Ombudsman as necessary, it would appear as an extra hurdle. As staff, I try to be friendly, approachable and trustworthy. I know other staff slap my wrist for catering to players too much some times, but in the end I figure its a game and we're all trying to have fun together.
