We'll make a wiki Chan to discuss the new/offered templates and changes. I don't want a realms repeat where folks remain silent on a change then I get dozens of pages saying they liked the old one.

Imo people wanna say, 'Here's a setting I'm making, and I can tell stories in it', when they need to approach it from, 'Here's stories I wanna tell, and this is a setting I can set those in.'

I think I'm different here. If I'm making a setting, I'm looking at it as, here is something I'd enjoy playing in, both writing stories and reacting too. And I look at it more as, I want players that look at it and say, "I can tell stories here, it seems ripe for exploration/plotting/storytelling." If I go some place that seems like the creators have a story to tell and I'm just going to be a part of their story, I tend to shy away myself. Then again, I prefer open ended rather than heavy specific plots and meta arcs (Mr. Invincible, "No matter how many times you save the world, it always manages to get in jeopardy again")

    • RE: What's So Hard About Ruby?

I'm offended by the phrasing of this topic and the content.

It implies it should be easy to program/code.

It implies if my dyslexic brain takes years and years to learn something, I'm not so intelligent because its actually easy.

I started to learn Mu-Code way back on Star Trek MUSE: Tos. They had coding school as part of joining your race, this is early 90s when everyone was expected to learn some code and to contribute to the environment of the Muse.

I still don't know everything, I still ask questions on MUSH, the PennMUSH Social MU where the developers hang out.

The fundamental difference for my brain and going to Python or Ruby is model/class/etc.

In MU softcode, if I look at an object that uses another object for code (the +attack uses the inherent dice code to roll dice by example), I can find the attack code (maybe its on the combat code object) because I learned grep or something. I can see in there it pulls a function from RNG object and in there I can see how the dice are rolling and storing in registers to go back to combat. I can slowly piece it together.

In Ruby, if I look at one file that adds to a model created by other objects, I have no clue how to find it all. NPC model maker gives it some attributes, but the Combat checker does something else with NPC model to help for combat. But I have no clue where to look or search to know what all is building the complete NPC model.

So what i learned since coding in PennMUSH since the 90s (thirty years for my dumb ass) is turned on its head in my brain. Hell, I can't go to TinyMux and expect to do what limited stuff my dumb brain can do in Penn.

So, I guess thanks for the snobbery about what's so hard and making me feel dumb today.

And probably all the people that think coding is hard in general. Thanks for them too. There is a reason not everyone is coding. And this 'its easy' isn't helping as much as you think it might be.

Know what's easy for me? I'm not gonna say, cause it will sound like I'm bragging and in the end, doesn't matter what I like to do or find entertaining.

@lotherio Which is funny, because in SW you go from A to B in seconds in the movies, especially the new ones.

Exactly that, skip travel enjoy the story and rp parts. I know some people like the coded space mining (trading), but really if I want that I'll fire up old Elite (or Oolite the copy).

Heads up on wondering if there is time to play. VD is less involved than Arx system wise. What we have is aimed at Heads of Houses and to help generate RP for storytelling purposes. Less of a commitment would be required.

      @thenomain said in Social Systems:

Imagine how dull a Shadow Run game would be if you weren’t engaging the conceit there in the title of the game!

I can't keep up wholly with the conversation. But what if game wasn't in the title. What if it was just Shadow Run MUSH, and folks only wanted to RP and story tell?

My two cents, I've enjoyed consent based stat-less games as much as I've enjoyed rolling stats and the joy of a failure with trusted people to RP with where finding a solution after failing or letting the story develop from the fail is just as enjoyable.

I don't think a social system could account for all potential in socialization, we're pretty advances socializes by our nature. Its far more complex than combat and lots of systems can make for complex combat mechanics.

My preference is like Ghost hinted, if there is a system in place, using that system. Against NPCs, one roll for success or failure. If needed against another player, my history is that we've been able to work out modifiers, multiple rolls, whatever to the fun of all involved. As @Ortallus suggested, if the other player and I can't work something out, one of us is being far to aggressive on the game concept and its not the place for me, alas.

We'll definitely get more hangouts. Feel free to make suggestions too. The market and gardens are up, the sports/leisure piazzas need to go up. I'd like something with the fashion piazza. There is a seedy tavern up (Wandering Albatross), but something more upscale would be nice too to avoid the docks for some folks. Need to get planned locations out there on the grid.

@songtress Yes, please do. No contrived stories needed.

I don't find myself bothering to define a specific color of melanin of the locals as it stands at this point and see no reason to make that any factor, definitely not one of importance. Besides that, while focus is on local families, there will be room for foreigners. No contrived stories needed there either.

And, that aside, if someone told you this back on Realms, I am sorry. We had African descended families as part of the theme, our limit was local families only back on Realms.

      @bored It's ask good consecutive.

On the trade, literally two houses that have done good and are communicating can have additions by June. Commodities will be available from NPCs. The Prince will pay for his stay with Sabastino via commodities. Sabastino has spent both resources but had gained enough rep to buy them back (after they gain rep for assisting Viergues) and they're netting a profit through interactions with the Prince. The intention is to use +plots to help as well as we develop that. But the info and rumors can lead to gains note. The PrP to reduce debt as an option may hinder getting houses involved it was added in to help shy folk or those running houses at odd times. Th hat and getting politics going were votes matter might help too (convincing others and figuring out rep to buy off npc house votes). There are and will be other means of netting commodities just takes leg work, but literally if two houses figured what they're all producing, we should see two or four additions in June.

I strongly agree in needing an active night staff or two . Sadly I may seem outgoing maybe but I didn't have a great list of folks I know oocly to pull up quickly. Like I am friendly on chans but rarely talk in page. Made some invites to come in development even on this board in general, most seem intent on other projects which all sound marvelous.

In both cases, criticism is welcome, it's the only way to get more involved in making it better.

    • RE: Skills and Fluff in WoD

@thatguythere Jams, knowing your weapon isn't firing due to firing pin issues or some other component, setting your sites and knowing the difference for range and what you're sites are set for, knowing the right ammo for your weapon and loading the clip right Firearms skill should make a big difference too.

I don't think skill descriptions are fluff. This is more rules lawyering for statistical advantage, but saying skill desc is fluff doesn't have weight.

    • RE: Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)

      Just two cents.

MU's are not games be default. Games can be played on them. There are still social MU's out there. I'm sure if we hunted long enough we could find an educational MU out there. When I play on one, it's more improv play (acting/writing). A MU may express it is a game. If there are rules I follow them. Games do not always involve conflict, rules yes, mostly competitive but not always.

@Lotherio I keep forgetting to ask, any chance of you guys making the standard kind of build room for players to just dig and desc their own rooms that you guys can just review and then link to the grid? It might just be my own preference but requesting the build and the descs you want feels awkward, especially if you like a bit more detailed stuff.

On that note I have asked in game a few times but I think you guys were swamped: where on the grid can palazzos go? When I explored it looked like all the current ones are linked to two specific spots on the grid. Is that the only ones or are there others that could be used?

Galileo and I will talk about the build thing, I can't decide it on my own.

It can be anyplace on the grid, those two locations just seems to be the preference so far. There is a map on the wiki, http://valorous.wikidot.com/theme:matora . Any place is welcome the larger buildings are in those areas, as well as on the west side of the river there, but any place is open for locations.

    • RE: What's missing in MUSHdom?

@kanye-qwest said in What's missing in MUSHdom?:

Why do people need to be logged in to the game 4-5 days a week?

Two quick comments. First, if they only play one place at a time to focus on one character, who's to negate their idea of social fun-time, some people like to log onto places and RP daily, its their fun. And second - game vs RP as has been put up in a few threads lately. MUs are not game by default, some people are logging in for the RP part first and the game (if even present on a MU) is secondary to them. Some people are on for writing and story telling, not game playing. As noted if I want a good strategy game or survival game, my PC or console has plenty of those to choose from, my phone has plenty of good game apps for that too.

Of course, someone can set up a game that is all action/survival oriented, and the 4-5 day a week player has the option to RP elsewhere just the same.
