"Your opinion is stupid" versus "You are stupid"

Personal or not, neither is constructive. And perhaps a slipper slope, but allowing either implies any criticism is welcome. If one can call opinions stupid, then anything can be called stupid and its just a small step to personal. Half the time around here, and only my opinion, most cries of stupid about something not personal seems straw man for some other personal reason that comes out after 3 pages of dogpiling and popcorn gifs.

      My threshold is 7.0,

That's kind of high, I had to check my favorite 'horror' movie of all time to see where it lined up; 7.3 whew. Its really suspense genre, and the ending is a little wobbly, but I love it; The Changeling.

@auspice Loved Babadook. Also from your pro-tip. A lot of trying to capitalize on gore lately as noted, they also forget that film language isn't just some fancy way of saying look at what Hitchcock did trying to be artsy, but the language is tried and true, its developed and evolved. Not to support gore genre, but the blockbusters trying to utilize it for shock value are devaluing gore (sounds weird, like saying porn with plot is better than not-plotted porn?). Don't slop it together, no matter how much budget you have to do so, look at the actual language of the art form.

I'm finding more films lately from indie/low budget folks to be better in their genres than the blockbusters which seem to be throwing money in the wrong direction. Osiris Child is a good one in the sci-fi genre that's pretty recent. They did an amazing job with their budget, care and detail to the craft.

I'm not sure what the fuck passes these days for "horror," but Truth of Fare ain't it. Maybe a slasher flick, I don't know.

I haven't seen Truth or Dare but more and more lately there seems to be these sort of want to be disturbing/disgusting/shock value movies and shows that keep being labelled as horror or suspense or both when clearly they are not; maybe this was their intent. I put the human centipede series in this 'genre' and even then, the disturbing factor just isn't there for me, its like meh, did they even trying (aka, did they research shock value in films to see what actually came before they tried to shock us)? Shock has its place, there can be only one Pink Flamingos, to the others, John Waters they are not says I. I'd put things like Gummo and Cannibal the Musical at or near John Waters over these newer 'shock/disturbing' ones like human centipede. (And John Waters as William Castle in Feud: Bette vs Joan was the best casting ever)

Post-Apocalyptic Free-For-All on Godhood, first there gets to be Top Dog (err, God).

I'd highly recommend a look at Halfworlds from HBO Asia. Basically scions with gods removed/out of play, they compete to gain rare gifts that come down from the removed gods sporadically.

    • RE: Book Recommendations

@Arkandel l @ThatGuyThere It probably will go that way with Martin, he has two planned books to go, the last took six years, coming after realizing he needed to add A Feast for Crows which took five years.

I don't think I can read any of the last books if someone else finishes them. Considering that Martin realized the TV series was taking too much time away from his writing and that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have all but split off from the books to conclude the books in the way they thought they saw it going. They say they have enough notes, but there is way too much missing from even the time Martin was more on board with consistency, I would just rather know where Martin is going for the conclusion rather than speculation; such as ...

      click to show

The Gold Company is hired by Lannister on HBO ... but in the book, the Gold Company is coming with Aegon Targaryen who represents another 'match' for Daenerys if we assume they still try to consummate/legitimize their claim on the Throne (even if it will still be John in this role in the book); is the final battle more between John and Aegon as if competing for Daenerys; to me the book is just a rewrite of Arthur, but instead of Guinevere doing the cheating, Arthur does it (Rhaegar as Arthur, Lyanna is Lancelot that wins the actual love of the King); which could make Aegon vs John the Battle of Camlann. In the books, the Gold Company is hired by Illyrio to support Aegon's conquest, Illryio is friend of Varys, who haven't revealed their end game, which seems less about the throne and more related to the the Red Comet/R'hollor. We have no idea what will come of this, but I imagine with Aegon taking the Stormlands and Zombie Catelyn Stark (Lady Stoneheart) with Lightning Lord Beric Dondarrion, with some connection to Ayra's direwolf/wolfpack, they might join up somehow. No telling what will really happen with Arya but the series glossed over her training with the Faceless Men, or Brandon Stark, he seems downplayed in the movie other than to reveal John (which I figured would be the revelation anyway as he developed under the tutelage of the Three Eyed Crow). And a thousand other things if I keep going (okay, not a thousand but ...), but I think it was enough to say radically different endings even before Martin said as much on his web site.

      https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2018/04/the-50-best-fantasy-novels-of-the-21st-century.html

      Do you agree?

I can't say either way, I'd move some up, but I haven't read the entire list, and my personal choices are probably fine where they are. But ...

For me personally, Name of the Wind being on the list, let along the top, blows my mind. To each their own, but the book just reads as some snowflake character developed by Patrick Rothfuss who, in each new 'revelation' of the main character it just seems to be how much more special the main character can be made by the author. And by comparison for me, I was ready Farland's Runelords about the same time I picked up Name of the Wind. Runelords was way better for and those characters are arguably more snowflake'ish (ridiculous power levels), but they had more character each alone, there were more characters in the spotlight, and they included the necessity of supporting cast that Kvothe lacked other than the lone dark maverick with backstory to make him even more lone dark maverick. I guess for greats, Kvothe is up there with Drizzt and Wesley Crusher, but that's not my cup of tea.

ETA: I wouldn't put Runelords on any best of lists, but if I ever made a high-fantasy canon game, I'd consider going Runelords with characters having a small, limited number of Dedicates, focused on one region of Rofehavan. It sort of reads like the kind of book Farland might of hoped was picked up as an RPG or even a T/CCG with the way the runes work.

I'd have a blast with this concept. I wouldn't expect interesting things to come from on high. But each new planet would be reason to go out and establish larger base array (ship to planetary locations) for parallex measurements to known stars and objects to increase those stellar charts and to slip in PrPs. I'm sure this guy got out lots in ToS just off camera.

Just a thanks here real quick. Speaking with @ganymede almost a year ago regarding politics and a KISS system lead me to the association with a simple game system; Catan. A simple necessity list of a few generic commodities (that represent a slightly more broad approach than those in Catan) and how to buy various things with them, extrapolated to work in only a marginally more complex system that couples with the basic Pendragon character mechanics. Much thanks to Ganymede, I look forward to seeing the system devised on Dark Ages.

So here we are, within the final drive. A few last bits and pieces in theme and making sure all the stuff is ready on the MUSH itself, from news and help files to grid and descs.

The Vindicti system has come out lovely and serves its purpose. Enough to be useful but more as an aid to RP. This and the House system are the heart of Valorous. The central focus is on house/dynasty building with two coins at play; reputation and commodities. The later helps to build up the house to grant individuals in said house bonuses in day to day play and interactions, the former is a sign of prestige as much as it is used to influence the world in general. Reputation can be used for commodities, an exchange with NPC contacts through influence in the world, representing that influence; as well as gaining access to certain plot/adventure/info/etc. Inversely commodities can be used to gain reputation, they could be used to hold social events as the price to host a noteworthy event to gain reputation, to host local tournies if wanted and reputation again gained for the house. Either reputation or commodities can be used to help Matora; with public works, increase defenses, whatever comes to mind. We’re not setting entirely hard limits, but it can be used to influence changes on Valorous on a larger scale.

Vindicti is at the heart of play here. This is not meant as a PK tool or to foster a PvP environment on a level that results in PK. Death is frowned upon with consequences to be had. It is, however, the easiest way to gain reputation for houses, by actively engaging in the squabbles of these families with rival families in their city. Even if one focuses on house building to gain benefits for themselves and their members through commodity and trade, participating in Vindicti will help by gaining reputation that can be used to build the house. Bad blood when losing is fine, fuel for the fire of more Vindicti.

In finishing up some code this week, we turned to house succession. Sure plots against other houses are fine, but what about that stagnant leader? Well, we’re accounting for this with some guidelines. Much like starting a new house will take 3 active players showing interest in a new house (and one of the few ways to start a lesser house to plot up to becoming a Conte), 3 players in a house may plot a succession/coop and initiate Vindicti against the current head. This will take a staff request to verify and establish, and help set the terms. We will include a time limit so there isn’t a coop every month, we’ll start with 1 per 6 months per house, and see how this goes. This is a little more involved and other houses will be welcome to spend reputation in such a conflict in favor of which ever side they may support. There should well be room to start as a landless knight (cavalieri) and work one's way up. The highest position of the city-state is the duca/duchessa and its by nomination for a set period, while an NPC start's here, we expect this to transition to a PC position, gaining reputation is beneficial but so is actual politicking; ie RP'ing with others to gain and earn support politically.

Either way, participating in family squabbles is one of the keys to building up the houses. No avoiding making rivals as actively participating in these is beneficial to both sides (winner or loser). We like Pendragon, but our main focus here has been on houses in the setting based on similar rivalries in the real world from the time period that influenced Valorous from Romeo and Juliette in fair Verona to the familial squabbles of House Visconti of Milan. The house tracking sheet and vindicti sheets are more indicators of progression and vehicles to drive RP. We’ll see how it goes. Next week we will try to do lots of clean up, maybe next Friday will be some good news for actually coming soon for Valorous.

It makes it a lot easier to get into because you don't need to comb the wiki beginning to end in order to understand what you're getting into.

I think a lot of folks share the sentiment for worlds they are familiar with, but I want to offer the opposite end of the spectrum. I'm through with cannon verse when I'm looking for a new place to play. I might be familiar with Star Wars in having seen the films and avidly playing WEG SW in the 80s and 90s, but any place now I have zero interest in because canon includes X number of books from the literature, Y number of games, Z number of TV series, etc. Sure they have some hodge podge guide saying what is/isn't cannon, but its usually more than I care to learn. Instead of SW with this, minus that, mix the other, I'd just be as happy with space opera game Delta, evil tyrant, conflicting races/civilizations, and some nod to the tech level to help with things as pointed out (space ships travel so fast, teleportation works, neural networking doesn't or whatever). Aliens verse has just as much culture in its cannon, numerous movies, comics, other sources. Could even be 'our technology is like canon universe, but instead we've ... Just, make sure the 'comparison' is something popular enough that people understand it.

For me, it is much easier to read original theme then to try and get caught up on a wealth of cannon that I either had no time to get into since the inception of the canon universe or wasn't interested enough and won't be to play a MU. Then again, I'm more after storytelling when I play and I appreciate the creativity of an original world over canon MU/game. And with original theme, I know if I ask the main creator of theme a question that wasn't in the files/wiki, they'll have an answer that isn't 'we must check the cannon' or some long explanation of how the canon conflicts and then a determination of how the joint is going to deal with that question.

That said, either is good, canon-verse or original theme, just different stroke and different folks.

And do not shoot for teen/school/training oriented, seems the masses are teen/schooled out, lesson learned.

I love the idea, cold storage, group politics, threats and exploration. Just before we tried Rise of Legends/Ephermeris Erudition, we'd discussed a similar original sci-fi idea. It was cold storage concept like you have there, but it wasn't random people. It was famous historical figures waking up and having to figure out where they were. It included a wall around the city to protect from others (similar to the alien threat you have up there), something like Wayward Pines. The historical figures sounded fun. Instead of Joe the Engineer pondering how to fix generators after mad Tim blew it up, would of been like Alexander Graham Bell arguing Kalpana Chawla on how best to conserve resources and provide sufficient energy or something. And they didn't die, they were preserved for mysterious reasons or something, part of the meta was figuring that out and then having to deal with the 'new world' and other threats/reason for that wall. CG would of been very easy, chars could be stated, but BG could of just pointed at wikipedia. We thought to make everything else secretive and allow the theme files and wiki to develop more as it was discovered rather than all up front. We vested more in the secretive expansion idea but then decided too much OOC playgroups would share info off site with friends rather than discovering as community build/exploration.

That's to say, go original. For the reasons mentioned and for some of us, we don't have the time to get detailed in franchise/canon things; like KOTOR SW, it sounds fun but I wouldn't play because too many others know the canon and I don't want to read a ton to catch up.

Small update as its mostly flushing out Theme at the moment, but the Vindicti system is nearing completion. From heads of houses being able to start conflicts, tracking comments separate from jobs, and allowing rolls to be made into the comments as needed (I want to poison the other house, we'll need this attempt roll from house 1 and a stewardship from house 2 to see if staff are organized enough to catch the attempt or whatever). Realms didn't have it, so added a quick way to roll into jobs (requests) too while at it. Personal growth is fairly steady, not overly fast, but mods from houses and how they build up is more of a focus so rewrote a little code so all dice and system checks will use the new mod system. This makes it easier for staff to add things like upgraded buildings for houses, new patrons, or any possible bonuses from plot additions. When this is done, going to add in a quick update for houses to use reputation to acquire commodities as well. Then its transport relevant files into the game and minor touches to open the place.

Theme wise, spent time making enemies around the city ready to react to what happens in the city of focus; again staff meta is more world reactionary not some kill the big monster plot/save the world sort of deal. Making a few long distance connections. May look at trade routes as a thing to acquire for houses to build more such connections, but again focus is on the main city and neighbor cities as this is the period of war (we've modeled it after 1330s in Italy, Milan and Verona go on conquests for a period of years, Milan has an uncle plotting with condottieri at this time, close to the rise of the condottieri near Farrara too, easy to add in more machiavellian dukes/duchesses in the area). But have been on a Magnificent Century binge, I've enjoyed seeing the long distance machinations of the period; the series is Turkish focused on Suleiman the Magnificent, its a soap/drama related to the rise Sultana Hurrem with the plot to invade and subsequent conquest of Turkey/Black Sea as backdrop (or vice versa, I can't tell which but was oddly drawn into the haram conflicts over the damn ring he made and the politics of who it was gifted too, impressed they got it to develop and play out over a good number of episodes).
