Those systems are very unclear and some people learned about them (presumably directly from staff)

Let me fix this. Staff told no one what to do. Players saw info and rumors and put in requests to track leads to hunt rumors on their own initiative. Like I said I don't talk to many folks oocly other than Galileo.

If one only looks at gain of commodity as the only value to interacting with other houses and that trading has no value outside of commodities, I don't know that adding more commodities fixes this. I'd imagine being in a pinch now means one would return the favor later but that's me.

Outside of MSB we only advertised on CoH, The others posted to us. The idea of getting NPCs and rewards and trades was pretty much all discussed here and I'm comfortable believing most active players visit from msb.

The trade - your one gain to get the commodity from another house to pay debt means break even. This is intentional. Its basically using any gain your house has to pay any debt incurred but asking players to rp the exchange versus staff just accepting the exchange. You're right 1 commodity credit and one commodity debt balances to zero. The PrP doesn't help with house interaction as a quick write off and is a more viable option mechanically I agree seeing it play out.

      @bored It's ask good consecutive.

On the trade, literally two houses that have done good and are communicating can have additions by June. Commodities will be available from NPCs. The Prince will pay for his stay with Sabastino via commodities. Sabastino has spent both resources but had gained enough rep to buy them back (after they gain rep for assisting Viergues) and they're netting a profit through interactions with the Prince. The intention is to use +plots to help as well as we develop that. But the info and rumors can lead to gains note. The PrP to reduce debt as an option may hinder getting houses involved it was added in to help shy folk or those running houses at odd times. Th hat and getting politics going were votes matter might help too (convincing others and figuring out rep to buy off npc house votes). There are and will be other means of netting commodities just takes leg work, but literally if two houses figured what they're all producing, we should see two or four additions in June.

I strongly agree in needing an active night staff or two . Sadly I may seem outgoing maybe but I didn't have a great list of folks I know oocly to pull up quickly. Like I am friendly on chans but rarely talk in page. Made some invites to come in development even on this board in general, most seem intent on other projects which all sound marvelous.

In both cases, criticism is welcome, it's the only way to get more involved in making it better.

      PS grilling food now 🙂

We'll definitely get more hangouts. Feel free to make suggestions too. The market and gardens are up, the sports/leisure piazzas need to go up. I'd like something with the fashion piazza. There is a seedy tavern up (Wandering Albatross), but something more upscale would be nice too to avoid the docks for some folks. Need to get planned locations out there on the grid.

@lotherio One of my struggles is that things are pretty insular; at the recent party it felt like people were sticking by the folks they already RP'd with and I arrived late and felt completely at a loss. It's probably also in some part my own anxiety. But we've got at least two social events in the planning works which may help. Willing to take suggestions if you have advice, though?

That party was rather large. We've talked about adding places but that wouldn't stop the folks RP'ing with folks they already RP with.

If you feel anxious, I'd be glad to help meet others and do smaller groups for people to start getting out of their houses. Its in this sort of early stage where houses seem to be sort of figuring themselves out, but really the political minded should be considering relation to the other houses. We were hoping monthly pairings for Valor would help some folks meet others, but we have a few that are having a hard time connecting with their partners.

This is completely in the air, but as staff, I'll run bigger things like today's Siege of Viergues every few weeks at most. But maybe we can add smaller type events to get folks to mingle outside of their families and circles? Like host small feasts/hunting/something where houses only send one Rep to RP with houses and others they haven't RP'ed with. A mingler or so something to get people to meet others?

I'm open to suggestions to help push the politics to start networking too; that said I'd be glad to help either as staff or in my pc alt guise if the would help somehow too?

@Arkandel The Arbores could use more people. They're basically a family of Da Vincis.

Would be good to get Arbore going more inline with some of the current active Houses too.

Heads up on wondering if there is time to play. VD is less involved than Arx system wise. What we have is aimed at Heads of Houses and to help generate RP for storytelling purposes. Less of a commitment would be required.

Had to comment on this, didn't belong in the spoilers discussion.

But this, right here. I get it we like to argue over who knows more about comic book continuity or are deep lore of LotR accumulated from quotes, interviews and other sources beyond the books but ... for the love of whatever your faith is ... stop talking about geek lore during the movie at the movie theatre on opening weekend. I want to appreciate the film for what it is, regardless of differences from the book or deviations made to fit it into the 2-3 hour time slot given for the 'movie' frame of reference. Heck, even if its been out a month and its late night and its you five and me and my five up front only, don't talk about it during the movie at the movie theatre. I'm sure the person your correcting doesn't appreciated it and I and my friends sure as hell don't appreciate you spouting off and ruining or viewing experience (whether some of us would agree with what you're saying). We're not filming a live movie review, we're trying to watch.

I wouldn't spoil Forest Gump by talking about the people he meets during the movie or original Roller Ball with details on how society is controlled or what Jonathan E. does. I wouldn't explain what Zardoz means to anyone who hasn't seen that movie other than to say if they like Sean Connery they should check it out. And these are decades old movies.

I don't think its that hard to make a new thread to talk about a movie, and for anyone to understand that reading a thread risks spoilers. But like in good/new movies where we (or I at least) hope to see something without spoilers that would perk my interest, its not hard to add the spoiler here, just a click away, or start a new thread.

Maybe its a difference in sharing these days. Like I wouldn't go watch the latest Jesus Christ Superstar and try to entice someone with 'OMG you'll be so shocked, they crucify him', but instead I might say 'so and so' did a stellar job on vocals, definitely a must see. Like its a thing, to be the first to notice/realize something and spoil it; spoiler alert, Freddy Kreuger's Glove is in the tool room in evil dead! (broke my own code there, sorry).

I selected other because of the part about moderating and I don't know what repercussions should be, if any, for spoilers.

Unless all I want to do is BarRp then scheduled RP is a must.

The topic deserves its own thread maybe, schedule vs unscheduled. Not sure how I feel about it said this way, it almost sounds like its assuming all non-scheduled RP is BarRp. I don't schedule and I usually go for some story, something is or has happened to interact with/to for me. Similar to @Auspice, there needs to be some story for me. This is like if I said the inverse, I need un-scheduled RP because if I wanted to plan out my RP, I might as well just write the book? Not saying scheduled RP is planned, just that sounded like lumping all 'improv' or 'random' or 'unscheduled' rp into random, and pointless social only.

    • RE: How did you discover your last three MU* ?

@faraday I'm totally offended, not really 🙂 In fact, if someone did google pendragon online rpg and Valorous did somehow come up, I'd be impressed.

I don't know what the answer is without including more walls of text, I tried to point out on the new to MUSH wiki page (which could be more prominent even) thing to type 'help' once in the 'game' too. All the old systems have that 'help newbie' and 'help getting started' but to get to an RP tutorial or something on top of all that, its more text. Shy of saying 'if you're new, type 'new I'm new to this, please help me' as a cue to other players that the person is so new they might not even know how to page or use a channel/line. I'd be willing to offer that.

I'd like to incorporate the web client workaround from @grapenut even, on a page that could help newbies (which could include the type 'new Help I'm new' to receive help if you are unfamiliar with MUSHing).

It was pointed out recently on Valorous that my response on helping with wiki templates wasn't friendly, but I didn't want to spell out the answer because just as many would be offended if I assumed they had no clue. I honestly enjoy meeting new players to the hobby, I enjoy taking scenes with 'new' players when some vets may not want to go through that sort of process. I don't want to offend anyone either way.

A lot is overwhelming to someone crossing the threshold, but how does it get to less overwhelming and welcoming? Especially the cultural side of things, as you noted, no amount of tutorial/text walls will help either way in that regard.

    • RE: Valorous Dominion

@lithium That is a hard toss up. The combat system is pretty straight forward, not a lot of tricks and tactics. But a few things to bear in mind. If your character takes damage (prior to armor reduction) equal to or greater than SIZ, they have to see if the stumble and fall over. All armor reduced Dex, so falling down can be common. In actual combat, if you fall down, you have a -5 mod to your attack, your opponent has a +5 for higher ground. They could all out attack (+10) and movement to stand happens after that resolution (15 skill with higher ground and all out attack is a modified skill of 30, higher if passion inspired); meaning a good chance they land a blow. You could fall over and take no damage in good armor too.

Secondary to that, if the damage you receive after armor (and shield) reduces is equal too or greater than your CON, you take a major wound. We've reduced this (part of the balance of not including cultural mods in CG). In straight Pendragon you potentially lose attribute points (from the scar), but you also risk going unconscious, the system checks for this. In Pendragon, if you take a major wound, stay conscious but continue to fight, you basically risk aggravating the wound.

I figured more explanation could help determine which you prefer, both have value.

Yes, get your SIZ now, and directly from current edition, if you're going combat type, yes, make sure Damage is 5, that will benefit you as a brute'ish type. That comes at the risk of dex and con, but they can be raised later, just assume you'll end up scarred and grizzled by the time you are veteran (any applied damage >= Con is a 'major wound').

Pendragon doesn't really do /heroic/ Arthurian characters.

Heh, starting chars are hard and combat can be brutal. But with raises it gets up into passion inspired pro knights with skills in the 20s, sometimes over 30 that battle for hours with no one doing any damage, much like a lot of the Arthurian sword fights.

And yes, you can raise all attributes, sans SIZ.

A new social gaming mush would be nice, but I wonder if it will turn out the same. If I log on at PennMUSH, Puggy, Brazil, RhostDev Site or any of the other social ones, its basically nearly the same dozen people or so. That said, I do think a common one that is popular and supported by more folks could be of great benefit. I still swing by OGR from time to time. But a community supported by the community would be good, just throwing in with the thought, I like it.

30s would be awesome. 1938 The Savoy; Chick Webb vs Basie following the first big swing concert at Carnegie, Fitzgeralds pipes with Webb, Holiday with Basie, Ellington swinging in to play after the concert. 30s would be cool for OC. And I'd like an excuse ... Wild Cards style even, chemical agents
