The point I take and I try to do is you can make bowling alley RP non-boring (mundane's probably arguable) by interacting with the setting, maybe posing some silly NPCs like fellow bowlers, or just having a character who has SOME opinions about bowling, whether they like it or hate it.

I completely agree. Its not the social situation that makes it boring, its what we as a player bring to the table. If I don't like sipping tea, I can make it so a few guys a couple lanes down are plotting to mug someone in the alley after, so we can decide to we go out to help random stranger or call the cops or ignore for our own safety. Making it about choices and drama and decisions without it having to be lets reveal our secret (which if I'm playing mundane modern, there is no secret but I suppose if I'm a blood sucker or something, I can pick them as some target to get my fill at some point later in the evening).

I wanted to RP with others at a bowling alley, and that created the entire personality for my PC on Requiem for Kingsmouth.

This makes me curious, not about all the dark things and secrets that transpired on RoK, but about this PC and their personality. Oddly I want to RP in a bowling now too.

Just to clarify an earlier post of mine, when I said I didn't like "bar RP" I probably didn't qualify it enough with the important clause that it's when it's the grand majority of what RP in general consists of.
Social RP, either to develop characters or to allow the aftermath of PrPs to branch off and develop 'off screen' is perfectly fine. I've no issues with it, especially since in fact those kinds of scenes can directly become lead-ins for more plot.

I think you're golden. I can say alternatively even on big places such as Arx, when I played my primary vehicle for RP is social. As a long time daytime player, I was never around for plots (US evening, this doesn't change ever). I made my own fun. There are sandbox/social places that have lasted years at a time. Its not everyone's preference but its not some small majority of people either.

The difference for me is, we're voicing opinions and they are all valid. Just the near absolute of all modern games suck and everyone hates social is a bit extreme. I'm not arguing that folks should enjoy mostly social RP, even if I know I can have fun doing social to social scene and making problems as I go along to get folks involved in problem solving that doesn't involve dice dueling or a broader plot.

When I write, "Everyone thinks X" It means "A great many people" think X is true.
When I write "Games who do X result in Y" it means "Quite often games who do X result in Y"

This is nearly the same thing. I am disagreeing, saying a good many games do not do as you say. Not even the large majority of Mu*s are played as you're insisting. So both everything is X or a great many are X are both wrong.

You don't like social RP, that's fine. I find most people I play with do. Unlike you - I'm not insisting the majority of anything or anyone plays the way I do.

What I am saying is more people than not do not agree with your near absolutes or play the way you insist majority of games just 'are'. Your points were mundane is boring and all Mu*s involve hiding a super big secret that you can't reveal ever. What I and others have said is - that just ain't so. You've not countered other than double down on your way is the only way people play, or the majority of people.

@misadventure Oh most places can have secrets but the absolute that its this secret that is consumes most of one's life that they must never share is pretty specific to like WoD as far as I know. The others depends on the level of politics. If the L&L allows politicking to like better oneself/station and ways to overthrow each other, sure there can be plenty of secrets that are not just who loves who and who dumped who.

But like I say, I and plenty others have played modern, no fantasy (no magic, no monsters, no nothing beyond what is in reality already) and are okay in social RP. Whether its just to pass time between the next life emergency/fire at the hospital or to plan some save the whale event. Its not for everyone, but some people like it.

This absolute that its mostly 'boring' or that everyone needs a super massive secret to be exciting is like hyperbole from some absolute stance. Just as mentioned, history and present says otherwise, folks will play 'mundane' games and do social RP. Not to bring it into the conversation or draw comments about it, but Crystal Springs is pretty much just modern, it has 30 players on most nights with 40 scenes going on. This seems far from boring.

The problem with most RPG settings and coffee shop chatter is that in most games you are keeping secrets.

Not to be rude but I think this is the issue I keep seeing in your responses. You keep speaking in absolutes. Modern moral/tech just can't be done, its boring. Most RPG settings are about keeping secrets. Literally, there are plenty that are PvE with open info (no OOC masques).

There are plenty of other games out there. Sure plenty of games where its kept a secret, but plenty of other games too. Its coming off argumentative. Most games are not WoD where you can't talk about whether or not your some supernatural being.

Furthermore, if batman is just showing up to roll some dice and show how bad ass he is but doing nothing in between, I think there are better video games to simulate batman ass kick-ery. I think we're all doing this Mu* thing for the RP aspect that comes along with it?

Not everyone might enjoy the routine coffee and philosophical debate sessions, but I'm in the half that does enjoy this. I've played on a few modern only games (and ran one) that had no monsters or threats of a other worldly nature.

I think it would be hard to sustain a MU like that.

I don't know how many times Seattle can suffer large scale catastrophes. Ships crash into the docks, the medical people get into a car wreck on the way there, the helicopter airlifting is caught in some freak thermal draft. I don't know why Seattle is so unlucky, but there's always another season of Grey's Anatomy.

Someone could probably make a large plot/small plot generator taking all the seasons of Grey's Anatomy and the seasons of Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. Roll for large plot: 26 - two commercial planes collide at the airport, each player rolls small plot: 55 - you get a flat tire someone sees you in your uniform while changing out the spare and they are pregnant but can't get through cause roads closed for large plot.

For some people, this RP would be boring however.

    • RE: Good TV

The Protector - on Netflix, its a Turkish dark fantasy series.

Its a great series, great concept. The only downside is its a Netflix series and they dubbed it, no subtitles. The voice acting isn't too bad just it overlays the full scope of the actors themselves who are all really good.

I'm tired of vampires to be honest. I'm liking/looking for something else, vampire is just overdone for me (any WoD element is for me lately).

I'm uncertain if the bad guys in The Protector are some sort of Jinn (or similar concept), they haven't got into where they come from so much (I'm only through season 2). They seem like some sort of Ghul (a type of Jinn that was translated and converted into vampire) sans the necessity to have to eat flesh (or want to eat flesh).

This is up there with Jinn for me. This is a series set in Jordan, it deals with the discovery of Jinn while on a field trip to Petra for some high schoolers. It gets into the Jinn wager stories that are common, in a modern setting (or battle of good and evil). If anyone remembers this, there was backlash in Jordan due to the portrayal of some of the girls in the story making a second season unlikely. It was really good, and good news is finally after 3'ish years, there is a planned season 2 that will be released next summer.

And another good one for me was Halfworlds on HBO. Mythical figures in Indonesia, immortal and such. The first one takes place in Jakarta but the seasons are sort of closed. The second season follows a storyline in Thailand. There is third season in the works supposedly set in the Philippines.

      All good series.

I usually don't self plug again for some place I've opened, but this time I am shamelessly doing that.

Doing good, its a cozy little joint with 8 active players, about 10-12 player characters total. A few working through CG. Its the right size for me to throw down 1-2 staff scenes a week and keep things moving at a decent pace (not fast or rapid, if someone doesn't show up a few times a week or even daily, they're not being left behind).

We're getting through pre-season plans dealing with the appearance of magic in some humans along with the discover of goblins on earth. Folks are discovering their heritage a little (bloodline being part of the theme), developing their magic potential and such. Getting close to introducing the first serious threat to humanity.

Influences include Once Upon a Time and Trollhunters, more super hero adventurous like Trollhunters.

I discovered a closer theme in June after opening, a Turkish modern fantasy piece called The Protector that is really close to home. I'd recommend The Protector for anyone, season 2 isn't too good for overall story of the main arch but it really delves into a supporting character and is close to the life struggles of a WoD ghoul from my perspective (the guy that created the ghoul is constantly saying your mind and using his abilities to dominate them to do his bidding in a manner when she doesn't want to have anything to do with it, this characters struggle is the best part of season 2).

I don't recall much planetary destruction in 12th and 15th century Northern Italy, but I must say that your version of historical events is probably way more metal

It may not have been direct planetary destruction on a massive scale, but look at all the politics and conflict Italians had their hands in at the time as comparable to planetary destruction. From helping launch crusades with their fleets to families helping the Ottoman Empire or affecting the geopolitical landscape around the Black Sea and beyond.

@de-villefort Now that you point it out, Robin Hood story is pretty similar to a lot of Western Movies, but instead of crusades, they're coming back from Civil War and such. Disney Robin Hood would be interesting.

I was pondering a place once using Zootopia, big city big dreams, big crimes. It had plenty of corruption. Heck the main character works with a mob boss for the purpose of solving the missing predators case. Combat was more focused on chasing (foot and vehicular). Cops/robbers type stuff, it's prevalent in some of the conceptual work - chase signs in rain forest district, an old swampy place Nick was gonna use for contacts that was like an illegal casino. I was persuaded not to pursue this one.

@Cupcake - Avatar would be good. The start of Korra but splintering to an alternate timeline or universe or whatever. Just the beginning of Korra without the next Avatar coming into being. The set up of the city being like some 1890's industrial city with its own dark underside was a great pulp noir sort of set up. Metal bender police, underground bender battles, the various elemental groups remaining splintered and not unified and not trusting each other. There was a lot in just the premise of the new legend series that was left unexplored heh.

ETA: I say 1890s cause it feels like a distinct split happening between upper crust tycoons and the bottom of the city is happening, but it covers a few more decades into like the 1930s. From new Hollywood/motion picture and sound, to automobiles on the streets and such that is later generations.

@ZombieGenesis Yes. Actually that Masters of Umdaar sounds ideal only because I am unfamiliar with it thematically, Fate Core and the system yes, the theme no. That's why I like OC comics and non-canon games, I like to discover something new. Masters of Umdaar could hit the itch between all the references they make there.

Masters of the Universe. Even with the recent resurgence I just don't think this theme would work well. Even if you expanded it to include other, similar, properties such as Thundercats. I think you'd have a hard time getting people to "play it straight" and take the theme seriously.

Or a Thundarr the Barbarian-esque sort of deal. Its years beyond the apocalypse, the world is now future-primitive with sorcery of some sort. Science guys with psionics control cities and computer and high tech stuff, people still have machines but live by simple farming, some folks learned magic (or its derived from tech or something).
