    • Alternate Universes, OR, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Fanfic

No idea if this should even go here, but it's ostensibly related to MU*s, and I'm sure @Arkandel can yoink it into a more appropriate place if necessary.

Have any of you ever thought about what your characters or MU* settings would be like in an alternate universe? I don't mean like a mirror dimension a la Star Trek where people are really mean and have implausible facial hair (although I suppose I don't not mean that). I'm talking about things like putting a medieval MUSH into the present day without magic, or vice versa, or switching your VtM MU* with a superhero one.

We had a brief entertaining discussion on Arx today about what Space Opera Arx would be like (tldr: very silly).

What would your favorite game be like in a radically different setting? What would your character be like?

      @Ghost

I do like those things, but what I really like are things like V:tDA's Road of Heaven and VtM's Sharia el-Sama--the religious based paths that are really heavy on morality.

Looking other Paths up, the Path of Entelechy looks pretty interesting.

I've been saying it since Gen 3, but I'd be delighted with a game with no new Pokemon if that meant expanded features, story, and gameplay.

      What shitstorm around pokemon?

As somebody who hasn't played it since...2nd Gen? I'm pretty 'who cares' about the whole "you can't get all 900+ pokemon!"

I'm still going to get it, because it's a Pokêmon game, but I'm a bit peeved. It's not about not being able to get all 5 billion pokémen. It's about not being certain if I'll be able to have my favorite pokęmons on my team. Because at the end of the day, having a fun lineup is what's best about Pokəmon.

This is one of these things that, like the 2DS, I would have instantly bought instead of the original had it come out at release. I've had my Switch since July of 2017, and the only times I've used it on a TV is for Just Dance.

Admittedly, Just Dance is a lot of fun.

I love everything about the Giovanni but their actual story.

I think, in the end, Vampire is not the setting for me. I'd love to play a character who is not evil and who is actively seeking redemption, but the existence of paths other than humanity has always felt more like flavor than an actual option.

@Rinel Custom nation DLC on EU4 lets you do it too. >.>

If you wanna do it without cheating, just start as Ethiopia, release Semien, and then conquer the holy land as an authentic Jewish state!

I actually already did the Semien start. If you have Charlemagne, you can start as a two province minor surrounded by a bunch of angry Ethiopians-to-be. Forming Israel from that is, to date, my proudest achievement in CK2.

It narrowly beats out Bear Kingdom.

@Rinel - Indeed, welcome to the club; we have cookies! (They come in several flavors, too: levoamphetamine, dextroamphetamine, a combination of both...)

My flavor is currently duloxetine, because we don't know if my executive function issues arise out of OCD or ADHD or both. Turns out, giving amphetamines to someone with deep-seated obsessive issues is really not good. So we're going with Cymbalta to deal with depression and anxiety, because it can sometimes treat OCD.

If I really honestly have both OCD and ADHD, I'm sort of fucked, pharmacologically speaking.

I'll know to avoid all medieval sword-and-axe type games because of the racist-ass 4chan Deus Vult crowd.

I hate that shitheads coopt such interesting periods to spew their filth.

Speaking of the Crusades, I now own every single bit of DLC produced for CK2. And I've figured out a hilarious way to create Israel with simplicity. So I'm going to be doing that and exporting it to EU4.

I love the fact that Gray Harbor is one or two steps away from being Kingsmouth from The Secret World, and I am very looking forward to running scenes where Spooky Things Happen.

@Ghost Thank you! Things that are normal but out of place are my go-to for creepy. Nothing like being in the woods and realizing no birds are chirping.

@Pyrephox said in Gray Harbor Discussion:

But! That sounds pretty cool as a Thing, whether it is a Dark Men Thing or just a Thing, and no one on grid knows a lot about them. There's a lot from the Veil that can pose threats - it doesn't have to be the Dark Men.

That's useful to know! Maybe it will be a Creature Of The [Insert Time Period Here].

Having derailed this thread, I'm going to do my best to re-rail it.

I like the Dark Men but I'm struggling with how to thematically have them pose a threat. In my last scene I wrote it so that their attention was displayed by a small area of woodland going totally still in the middle of an oncoming storm making everything windy, and a fog rising out of the forest edge. But I'm not sure if that's too physical for them?

Of course I can just retroactively have it be done by a shadowy human working for them, so it's not a huge deal, but it does have me wondering.

Maybe this could get forked to another thread? It’s WAY off topic.

Seriously, I had to wade through pages upon pages of backscroll to see if Gray Harbor was banning trans people (they aren't to my knowledge!).

Yeah, I feel guilty for having my post lead to this. I owe an apology to @bear_necessities . Sorry.

For the record, I just apped a nonbinary character on Gray Harbor, got accepted without issue, and am having a great first scene. I really like this game so far!

UPDATE: IT'S BEEN SEVEN HOURS AND THE SCENE IS STILL GOING ON AAAAAAA

So the point is that an action might seem bigoted but isn't. The exact group being slighted isn't relevant to the question.

I think we kind of are relevant if we want to play someone like us, my dude.

Uh. I mean, I don't think it makes you a bigot per se

That was literally the point of the conversation, yes.

The reason I said per se is because it's very hard for me to imagine a situation in which trans people wouldn't exist. I suppose one with magical transitioning, a la The Craft Sequence, might fit the bill, but even then there is the pre-transition experience--and that's only talking about transsexuals, not nonbinary people.

Which, I mean... makes sense. WIthout clarification, it does come across as a bigoted thing to do. I asked on this board a while ago if not allowing trans characters would make me a bigot. The answer here was a resounding yes, even though the sensible answer is no.

Uh. I mean, I don't think it makes you a bigot per se, but as a trans person I'd certainly be wondering why you'd decided not to allow people like me to exist as PCs in your game.

I mean, I almost always RP as a cis woman, so it's not like my RP would be stymied... but I'd certainly be a little concerned.

@Ghost said in Gray Harbor Discussion:

Not a lot of trans people were in the WW1 trenches

Not a lot of openly trans people, no.
