    • RE: Comic Games And Scope

I think that the big difference between comic games and others is the sheer amount of pre-created characters over decades of stories. And there's a pre-set notion in the minds of comics fandom, including myself, that there's 'star' characters and 'everyone else. And everyone wants to play a star, even if it might not be the one you had your heart set on. There's a lot of baggage that can go along with that.

Relationships are already established and defined from the comics, with almost no deviations allowed for fear of a player making changes then dropping and future players not liking some of the changes a player made. I know that I've certainly passed on some of my preferred characters because I didn't like the in-game continuity for them.

And the 'star' characters remain relatively constant, but there is some shuffling of the 'A List' every so often, as new character get introduced in comics/media, and established characters get a popularity bump. Back when I first started MUing back in the late 90's/early 00's, it was easy to find a game where my personal favorite, Iron Man, was open and available. After the first movie,, though, his popularity shot through the roof and Tony tended to get taken quickly on new games. Same with 'specialty' games; there was a time when there were multiple games that were purely X-Men centric when the movie came out. Same with Heroes in that show's heyday.

I'm also not a big fan of the mixed universe games, despite how popular they are. There are serious power discrepancies between the top tier of DC characters and the top tier of Marvel. So, you end up giving Hulk or Thor a massive power boost, or you nerf Superman and Wonder Woman to scale them back.

I'd love to see OC games make a comeback for supers. Once, there were like 3 or 4 OC games running at once; now, we're pretty much down to Champions. But even then, I recognize that OC games aren't popular because of the amount of lore needed to be learned by a player to become functional in the game world, and that OC characters are stigmatized as being 'lesser' among supers players.

Another factor in supers games is what I call 'A Canon Of My Own'; the desire to create a new line of stories that suit the player's tastes where published canon falls short for them. I'm as guilty of this at times as anyone, I'll admit.

It all comes down to getting players invested in the game, and FC settings have numerous ways of getting that player investment right from the start.

So, how do you get player investment in an OC game? My main thought is to give them a way of making the character concept unique and special, even if it's an inevitable homage to an FC. Someone wants to play a Superman 'clone' character, that's fine; but give that player control of the lore surrounding the alien race they come from, have the player decide if there's other members of that race. Let players craft lore and legacies that can shape the game world and be passed along.

De-stigmatize OCs or homage characters; after all, the Fantastic Four are basically DC's Challengers of the Unknown with superpowers. Both Superman and Captain America share story and power beats from the 1930 novel Gladiator by Phillip Wylie (scientist creates a formula that turns his unborn son into a superhuman with tremendous strength and the ability to leap tall buildings). Batman's tone and concept are taken from Zorro.

It's certainly possible to create a general focus supers game these days; X-Men: Divergence certainly shows this. I think the keys are 1) Manage expectations, 2) Encourage player-centric lore, and 3) Patience. This would be a game that's going to require a lot of staff hand-holding and encouragement, will probably never be as big as one of 'the big boys', and will take a long time to grow into stability. Like a couple of years, rather than months. And I can understand a lot of devs not wanting to commit that amount of time to a game just just get a solid return in the player base.

@hobos But the issue is that the people in the diner did have self control over their own actions; until Dee/Destiny removed the self-control from them. How much of what happened in that episode was really Dee projecting his own issues & perceptions onto the others?

Also, what are your thoughts on The Collectors, where Dream pretty much calls out the same edgelord mindset you pointed out, with the addition of making them always be aware of how meaningless their existence and dark fantasies really are.

CORRECTION: The issue was 'The Collectors', the episode with Morpheus doing the direct confrontation was 'Lost Hearts'.

Runescryer, my unsolicited advice to you is to not argue OOCly about IC stuff. React to it ICly instead, if and when your character ever hears about it IC. That's way more interesting. I guess MUSH players really like the collaborate approach of asking someone out-of-character "do you really want the story to go this way?" and I guess, fine. Just not my preference. The surprise and excitement of getting in-character consquences for some offhand comment is way too cool. But whatever. (I heard you were requested by ZG to contact Lithium OOCly, so, I'm editing my post.) If you were really going to do the OOC questioning, and do it honestly, then you should write a short concise summary on whatever the event is, and simply ask if the other player wants to retcon it. If they don't, then say thanks and politely stop talking to them OOC.

Fair enough. I was asked to speak with Warren/Lithium, OOCly. And that was the only interaction I had with them.

Also, my apologies if I misgendered Lithium before. Not my intent and will mea culpa to the screw-up.

      So...

Neil Gaiman tweeted today that Netflix wasn't impressed by the streaming numbers for Sandman. Not because the viewership wasn't there, but because people were spreading out watching Season 1 rather than binging all at once.

There's no formal announcement yet, but I find Netflix's approach to be rather short-sighted. Streaming disrupted traditional TV viewing habits at first with the option for binging entire seasons in a single setting. But more recently, Disney+ and Hulu changed the viewing paradigm back to weekly installments, and streaming viewers have adjusted to that, once more. Netflix needs to adjust their expectations to the new reality of streaming TV...

There is also FFG code floating around somewhere, but I don't know how complete it is.

While I like the FFG system a lot, I don't think it's well suited for a MU. Mostly for the same reason I'm not a fan of FATE for MU's: it requires extra interaction between the players and the person running the scene, rather than just a simple dice roll to determine success or failure. That just slows action scenes down quite a bit.

Thanks for creating this thread! Some comments from me.

SPOILER ALERT - EPISODE 4 - SPOILER ALERT

For starters there is some great chemistry in this show. I'd say Lan and Moiraine, Lan and Nynaeve... uh, I guess the dude who plays Lan seems to be killing it. Ila's scene was right on the money, I thought, as well.

When it comes to the plot itself I think they are trying to simplify how the One Power works. For example I don't think anyone has said 'Saidin' or 'Saidar' once. That's perfectly okay as long as they stay internally consistent; for instance Logain knew how strong Nynaeve was when she channeled (in the books a man can know if a woman channels but that's it) yet he was captured in the first place by Aes Sedai who infiltrated his camp and Shielded him before he was able to defend himself.

It's creating some issues for book readers (such as myself) since I don't know how much of it they just haven't explained and how much is actually true in the show-world; for example I don't believe they've actually said male channelers are stronger on average than female channelers. Logain specifically was but that could be because he was an exception.

Also why would the Red Ajah hunt down all false Dragons if some are female? Wouldn't they rather train or use them against the Dark One's forces? There's no taint, there's no risk they'll go mad and kill everyone around them.

The focus on 'who is the Dragon Reborn' subplot is kinda weird. The books have been out for thirty years, that's a really easy thing to spoil. I just hope they don't try to make someone else be that person; that'd be a massive and very unfortunate departure from the books' story to the point of just making the story a completely different one. Character arcs like Min, Aviendha and Elayne's would be massively changed or made irrelevant in the process as well.

Yeah, the lack of a Saidin/Saidar explanation really makes the Red Ajah problematic, instead of a regretful necessity. Personally, in stead of Egwene gowing for a swin, which really served no story purpose, I would have used the tme to film the Dragon moount prologue instead. It explains a bit of the history and lore, but also explains why Men using the One Power is a Very Bad Thing.

@Runescryer Warren Worthington, aka Angel, has money. He backed many teams in the comics, and bankrolled many things. I didn't pay for anyones college tuition, I bought a dress for someone, let someone borrow a car, and was founding a comics team, like he had done many times in the comic books. Playing a wealthy character doesn't make someone DWOPP and thems fightin' words.

Please point out where I publicly outed you as DOPP; here, BMD, Discord, anywhere. I went out of my way to keep your handle out of this while @ZombieGenesis investigated. I never mentioned your MSB handle (which I didn't know) or you Ares handle. While we did have our rough encounters, and I'll take my equal share of the blame for that, I never mentioned your character name or any other means of directly identifying you, much less the game this was on.

      You outed yourself.

And since you have, here's the receipts for people to independently examine your interactions and decide for themselves.

      https://infiniteadventuresmush.com/char/Warren

NOTE: All logs up to 9/21/22 are the ones @Lithium participated in.

If you want, I can also post my log of our OOC chat when things got bought up.

Since we're on the subject, how about discussing you putting Betsy on full blast around the X-Mansion, accusing her of endangering everyone by way of her relationship with Tony and revealing herself as a mutant, when with your last scene, you did the exact. Same. Thing, With Lois; rescuing her from a dangerous situation and revealing that you were a mutant to her.

Let's talk about how you only really started working on the Champions after I started organizing the initial Avengers Event.

Let's talk about how after people started pointing out you playing Warren as a completely spoiled asshole (a valid interpretation, BTW), you suddenly came up with getting 'evil infected' in the Limbo scene, hinting that you're being corrupted by something you had suddenly encountered there. You specifically mentioned an 'evil Warren phase' you were going through in Chat, leading to speculation that you were setting up some kind of 'immaculate cleansing' later that could excuse away all your bad behaviors.

Want more receipts, I got 'em. Part of the nice thing about Ares: automatic record keeping & storage.

I can even provide conversations I had with Staff where I was advised to boot Lobo from the Avengers Event because it was a 'joke' sign-up. Also, where I stuck to my guns about it being an Event free for anyone to participate in; Marvel or DC, legacy Avenger or otherwise.

Let's talk about your 'I'm just asking questions, here' defense about you suggesting (in a private 1 on 1 scene, granted) to Jean that Tony Stark manufactures Anti-Mutant Weapons. Yeah, that pissed me off; the 'I'm not touching you' whisper campaign you were starting. After our OOC conversation, I was still willing to adapt to that point of view you put out there and adapt it into part of Stane's betrayal while Tony was a captive.

All of this behavior from you started when Betsy spurned your advances in RP; the billionaire pissing contest, the whispers about Betsy in the X-Sphere, the sudden idea of creating the Champions.

Face it, man...I won't deny that others gave you shovels, but you dug this hole all on your own, here.

This thread makes me want WoT MU*s to be a fad again.

The problem with WoT MU*s is that we as fans disagree on just about everything about how they should be done.

Which Age (or where in the timeline) should they be set at? Playable canonical characters? Allow male channelers? Hell, even allow diverting from the books in any significant way?

You ask ten well-meaning fans, you'll probably get a variety of answers on all of the above and more. And for many of us any way other than what's in our heads is wrong and we won't play it. 🙂

Yeah, I think the best way to go with a WoT game would be to sell it as 'a different Turning of the Wheel'; which is basically what the show is doing. Have a lot of the basics (The One Power, the Dark One, the Dragon, the Forsaken, etc.), but also make some changes for the game to be more playable (men can be Aes Sedai; both men and women can be corrupted by using the One Power, just not as severely as in the books...)

      @Lithium So...to recap...

Manufacturing something from absolutely whole cloth, even in a private scene, isn't starting up the foundation of a rumor? And this isn't a 'Tony smells bad' kind of a thing. Also, I indicated I was trying to work with you to resolve this without major drama happening. This isn't the flex you think it is, my man.

I'm willing to let my archived scenes stand how they are. At no time had Tony ever been told about the Mansion, about any mutants other than Betsy, or had any secrets revealed to him.

I will cop to you talking with Harley about founding a team before I put in the event, and I apologize for that accusation. As far as I knew, I was the only one talking about assembling a team. Not even the Justice League was getting organized at that point. So, my apologies on that point.

As to the Lobo thing, Staff approached me about booting Lobo to free up space. I declined in the interest of being as fair and open as possible.

And, as for the comment that started this whole thing off... from the 'Moving Day' log, 9/16...

"Love life?" Warren asks as he reaches up to scritch at the side of Jeans head gently when she leans in close, his arm and wing, staying around her but he doesn't lean away. "I've met her twice. Once being today. I'm not sure how that is anything remotely close to a relationship. It's barely acquaintances." He shrugs a little, "It's not like she and I hooked up or anything, besides, wasn't she bragging about bagging Tony Stark? Bragging about how she exposed herself as a mutant to someone who makes weapons that are used against us? Then she rushes to the school when she should be laying low and keeping people safe if she was exposed? Then asking if you and I are a thing, right in front of Scott?" He shakes his head, then asks, "Was Scott still there?"

So, would you care to reply by pointing out the scene where Betsy was bragging about banging Tony? Would you care to point out where there were any news reports in game that exposed Betsy as going out with Tony? How is this not a potential foundation for a whisper campaign? In point of fact, Tony lied to SHIELD about the incident to cover Betsy's involvement; lying to a Federal Law Enforcement agency is sort of a crime, you know. We went out of our way to hide Betsy's involvement. If I was guilty of making assumptions, and I'll accept the jury verdict on that, you were doing the exact. Same. Thing.

Things escalated because neither of us trust the other in RP, probably RL now as well. And despite that little comment of yours, Warren's name was never mentioned by Betsy to Tony at any time. Tony's only information about mutants came from the books of Xavier and MacTaggart, in addition to the things he and Betsy talked about.

You're still trying to gaslight. And people are noticing. Maybe instead of getting upset at the reactions of other players, stop the gaslighting?

@Ghost said in Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?:

My pitch for Starfinder is that it is d20 based, we've seen Pathfinder MUs, and Starfinder is the Sci-Fi upgrade of Pathfinder.

      So, in theory, it's doable.

It is Pathfinder in space....and it isn't. There's some internal consistency problems when it comes to the Pathfinder Lore, which I love.

-Elves are traditionalists preserving their ancient ways on Castronovel, yet no magic Classes from Pathfinder are presented.
-Pathfinder Deities are still worshiped and acknowledged, but no Clerics or Paladins

It's sort of like the Pathfinder lore and conversion rules were sort of tacked on as an afterthought.

Rogue Genius Games did release a Starfinder supplement called 'The Starfarer's Companion' that converts a lot of the Pathfinder Classes to Starfinder; I highly recommend it if you're wanting a bit more out of the setting.

Still, even without the extra material, I'd join a Starfinder game without hesitation.

Also, I'm thinking that Matt didn't join them because the plan for the series is for him to go off and start his booty call storyline in Season 2. Not sure how he's going to get his spear and medallion if that's the case.
