And FUNDING doing the follow-up studies to prove the first one was actually legit, rather than only funding 'novel' research.

RE: The Work Thread
My full job started this week and I love it. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I always thought I'd be intimidated by middle schoolers but like... no. I LOVE THEM. Their big goofy bodies, their teenage-drama, the ways they hide themselves. Like, I LOVE IT.
Like, I'm a blunt AF person in IRL whenI know I'm right, so when this kid popped up with "It's not that I can't, I just won't," I looked him in the face and went, "You say that because you don't want to be embarrassed that you can't don't you?" and the kid stared at me and went, "Well, yeah." I can look at a kid and be sarcastic with them and they'll duck their head and go "yeah, well, Mrs..."
I'm SURE that the honeymoon period will end eventually, but till it does? I'm going to suck every second out of this. I'm FINALLY being able to meet kids and fill holes I always KNEW existed, but that I couldn't ever GET TO because I had 20+ other kids with other needs. I no longer have to choose which kids I can help. If they come to me, I can help them, period.
It's amazing and unless things change, I dunno if I'm ever going to go back to the classroom. (Which considering mine is a grant funded position will be in 2 years unless we find the money elsewhere in the budget.)

RE: Autism and The MU* Community
Huh.
I wish I could say this to a particular parent because this is legit. Just this morning they were describing how sometimes their kiddo has to put on several pairs of socks before they find one that feels right (thus leading them to be late to school), plus a lot of other things you guys described.

RE: Autism and The MU* Community
So many of the things you all have described in your experiences are things that we also see in our exceptionally gifted children, but who aren't/haven't been identified on the spectrum.
So speaking as an educator who wants to have the open mind: Where does the line get crossed for a behavior to be more spectrum than a quirk?

RE: Critters!
I'm beyond excited!! This tabby was 100% feral three weeks ago so we called him Ares since he tried to scratch our eyes out any time we came near him. He has been with his current foster for two weeks and just look how far he has come!!!

RE: Good or New Movies Review
This was really cool to read. I'd wondered why some was in English and some was in Chinese.
ALSO QUESTION: I know that there are many different dialects of Chinese - is it appropriate when you don't know what the exact dialect is to call it 'Chinese'? Even if you do know (for example, this post since you explicitly told us it is Mandarin) is it still appropriate to use the more generalized term?

. If he's gonna be a cockmonster to your Ma
Woah - to be clear, he's perfectly fine to my mother. It's physically hard to care for him and my mother's getting old and frail-er. So caring for him multiple weekends in a row is wear and tear on her body she just can't do very well any more. So I'm happy to help there.
@L-B-Heuschkel I think hit it on the head. He jsut can't see that other people also need help - if they're not as disabled as he is, then they're not worthy of assistance.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
Well. That option hurts my mother, and that, I am not willing to allow. (She won't allow him to go without care because she has convinced herself that his injury is ultimately her fault.) I'd rather deal with him being a closed minded dick-head who gets all his info from the internet because he never gets out than leave ALL his care on her aging shoulders.
Plus he is my brother, and I hope that in the heavens he will learn the error of his ways, even if he won't now.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
My elder brother is a quadriplegic, going on 16 years or so now. He use to be my favorite person in the world, but he's slowly becoming that family member that you grit your teeth at and pick which battles you'll fight against their BS.
He gets especially nasty when talking about people who need government help. Housing/food/medical care, etc. As far as he's concerned they're a bunch of fraudsters.
What kills me most about the end is that HE doesn't have to work for anything. His housing, food, medical supplies, etc, it's all paid for by various government agencies. But because other people have "working" bodies then they should be able to get by without help. Only people with HIS level of difficulty should receive any help.
I'm happy to help and take care of him, but I'm also very much looking forward to going home and not having to grit my teeth/fight the urge to leave him hanging in a transfer between bed and chair utterly helpless after he's said something particularly bigoted, racist, anything-phobic or just generally hatetful.

RE: Online friends
Lord - I remember being a naive 16 year old answering that question... I was so... not at all aware of life.
-
RE: Online friends
Yes, but, I'd sort online friends into two groups- real friends and acquaintances.
Real friends I care about them beyond the game itself. When they or I leave a sphere we keep talking to one another. I keep caring about them. I want to send them a message and keep up the connection. Acquaintances are those where if the game connection ends, so does the 'friendship'.
