Ngl, the more you guys talk the more I would want this. Post-Korra time just so that the advanced tech is more available. It would be fun to play a grunt in that world.

    • RE: Books...Books...Books....

I'm seriously annoyed at how much I enjoyed the prequel books by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston - The First Formic Wars.

Ender's Game and it's related books form the backbone of a good portion of my adolescence. I have signed copies of the Shadow of the Hegmon from one of Card's visits to BYU. My first Mu was Ender's Game based, and I still run the FB page for the old game players. (The kids of some of the last admin/wiz are old enough THEY are reading the books now.)

I am also aware that Card has gone absolutley fundamentalist and I'm ashamed of many of the public statements he has put out in the last 15 years both as a fan and as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I had convinced myself that the prequels were going to carry that particular taint with them.

But I needed something to read and listen to when caring for my brother last weekend and so I decided I would give it a try. I was hooked before I had even left the parking lot of my apartment. I even bought the physical books when I went book browsing with my niece and nephew.

And gdi, they were amazing. They are NOT Ender's Game. They aren't the Shadow books. They are closest to the Speaker of the Dead ones, but even those are a far cry.

These were just... amazing. I cared deeply about every character. It cut me apart when they died. I couldn't figure out the angle of anyone, which the older I get, the harder it is to surprise me. I was expecting a different resolution than I was given. Now I'm irritated that the third book is done and my libraries don't have the ebook or audio book for the first book of the following series, The Second Formic War. I have to wait till tomorrow and go buy the danged thing. (I own physical copies of all the other books. I'm committed now.)

      They were just.
      So.
      Good.

Grump. Apparently my underwriter (we're buying a house) can't believe that a teacher would get a massive pay increase from one year to the next. So I have extra hoops to jump through before we can close. Unfortunately right now our HR is at skeleton levels between the virus and summer break. So it'll be a bit difficult to get the paperwork filled out.

In previous years I could just drive up there and stand at the front desk till someone could see me but not this year. Soooo many phone calls and emails now. >.>

I wish they'd given me more than 5 business days before we close to do it. >.<

I'm not even a huge Avatar fan, but I feel like I would give this a swing, esp if you could set it up in Ares.

      Alright, try 5.

****** So. Animorphs. Lemme just sit here a bit and unpack a bunch of stuff.******

I wasn't a reader when I was little. I //really// sucked at reading. It was 3-4th grade when I finally even learned how to do it semi-effectively, and it wasn't until the Animorph books that I actually LIKED reading. It's also the thing that finally hooked me and my Best Friend I kept through high school together.
      .
Because of that I have ALWAYS kept the (almost, some of those books are HELLA hard to get your hands on these days actually) full set of books in my classroom library. They get a whole shelf even though only a handful of kids have actually read some of them in my 10 years of teaching. They mean a lot to me.
      .
When this covid thing started we were kicked out of our classrooms basically overnight, but we got to come in for a single hour the following Monday in shifts to hand out chromebooks/packets to kids as we flipped digital. I had a baby who's parents are trash and even though both of her OLDER sisters got their chromebooks, they were never going to come get HERS for HER classwork. So I said "fuck it" and drove it over to her house. Upon delivering her chromebook I realized I'd left my wallet at the school, so went back for it. Grabbed wallet, went out to car, and.... I'd locked my keys in my car. So I went BACK into the building and called a locksmith. While sitting there in the debris of my classroom I sat with my back against the wall and pulled down the first three books. I re-read the first one since high school, and grabbed the next three to take home as some pass-the-time reading till we went back. (Yeah, I didn't anticipate not going back...) I got so into it though that I went digging around for online bootlegged copies and I FOUND THEM. So now I have the whole damn series on e-book via my nook.

Alright, now that THAT is out of my system.

These books are NOT CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.
Seriously. The main theme is how war badly screws up the people that engage in it. Over the course of the series (even the BS ghost written ones that Applegate didn't personally author) the teens slowly lost a lot of their humanity. They were suffering before, especially Tobias and Ax, but when they had to make the decision to let David die? Dude, there was no coming back from murder. Jake became a cold blooded leader willing to sacrifice the lives of anyone to win. He DID sacrifice Rachel in the end, even though she also volunteered. Rachel became utterly psychotic. She couldn't have existed in the real world after the "war" because her PTSD was so bad. Tobais was CRUSHED by her death, though tbh, he was fucked from the moment he was stuck in morph in book #1 and then found out who his father was. Poor Ax - can you imagine how badly his relations would be with the rest of his species despite being a "hero"? Marcos had some success, and Cassie managed to find another outlet. But seriously. They lost their childhoods completely.
      .
If they make an Animorph movie that ends happy in some way, I'm going to be fucking PISSED. I know a lot of people aren't happy with how the books "ended," but I say fuck that. It ended in the only realistic way that it ever could have ended. Those kids were fucked up forever.

      In K.A. Applegate's own words
One of our models was the old TV series Combat! which followed a single squad around WWII. We wanted that same tight-knit feel, that same grunt’s-eye-view. We decided early on that this was basically a war story, and we knew if that’s what we were doing, then we had to be honest in showing the cost. We wanted to reflect the effects reported by actual soldiers… Some profit from the experience, others are destroyed by it. Jake finds he doesn’t know what to do in peacetime, and finds his actions are questioned and even condemned. Cassie finds purpose in helping some of the displaced aliens. Marco works the talk show circuit and gets a TV deal. Tobias is shattered by the loss of Rachel. Ax returns to his people a hero.

    • RE: Critters!

Black kitty is allergic to something and we can't figure out what. A few months ago she was sneezing badly (7-8 rapid fire sneezes in a row) and scratched up a the skin above her left eye till it was bleeding. It cleared up in a couple days though so we thought nothing of it.

Two days ago she started sneezing again and now has a large patch of scratched skin above her right eye.

Neither of us can think of what she could be allergic to. We haven't changed food or litter. We haven't bought anything new. We haven't even gone anywhere but to the grocery store and to get take-out.

She is acting otherwise totally normal. Playful and sleepy at her normal time of day.

It just bothers me to hear her sneeze and scratch herself and not be able to help.

I suggest anything by Brandon Sanderson then!

Maybe start with Elantris or Warbreaker to get a feel for his writing before diving into his longer books.
