    • RE: What Types of Games Would People Like To See?

The first Moo I played was Ansible, based on Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game book. Its grid was Battle School with the ages being 5 to 13 (TOPS. Most people stopped at 11 or 12.)

It worked as far as I'm aware. There wasn't as much relationship RP, though there were always crushes here and there. Sex was a nope, of course. Of course, a lot of us were way younger then. 11 year olds playing and such.

    • RE: Accounting for gender imbalances

@Pandora said in Accounting for gender imbalances:

I'm hesitant to go to HR to file a grievance against someone I consider a friend.

Friends don't let friends make a toxic work enjoyment.

But more seriously- you are in a professional environment and so is he. Quirky viewpoints are fine, but they need to be taken up outside of a work environment. It doesn't sound like people are able to work when he goes on these rants. Thay is what I would report to HR.

This entire thread has been utterly fascinating because it is so very different from anything I've experienced hiring for teaching positions. My profession (elementary education) has almost the exact opposite problem. It it isn't in administration it is very hard to get men into the classroom when the kiddos are young. (The worst I heard from a parent once was, "He teaches kindergarten? He must be a pedophile, I won't let my child be in that class!)

    • RE: Scene Set Ideas

Fort Weyr @ PernWorld had a verb people could type for a bit that gave random scene ideas. It got old after a while like all random generators did, but it was a lot of fun at first.

      @Rinel

I'm going to be pedantic and note that 'fluency' and 'vocabulary' are completely different fields in literacy. Fluency relates to the speed and smoothies of which you are able to take in written text (typically measured by speaking aloud) - it doesn't actually measure how much you understand what you read, though fluency in reading is a major predictor of future reading success. Fluency is slowed down by phonics, phonemic awareness, and/or processing deficiencies. Vocabulary is a whole different area of literacy. It involves actual understanding of words, their meanings, and their connections.

You can have high fluency with a poor vocabulary if you are good at breaking down words and guessing. You can also have terrible fluency with amazing vocabulary if you process things slowly.

This is why teaching reading is so hard.

    • RE: How to Escape the OOC Game

The vocal group is what sets the tone though. I can't count the number of times I've heard about someone's poor behavior either second hand or because someone decided to 'warn' me for one reason or another. I do go in with my hackles raised to defend myself in those cases, even if I'm aware it is happening and try to avoid the bias.

Someone of whom a vocal group has spoken out about are more likely to not be able to get into something.

As in all things, this is not a zero-sum game. There are so many shades of gray from the person being a super disgusting creeper who is terrible to the person who legit didn't know but tried to fix when told in this it isn't possible to capture all.

Just a recognition that the voices that speak the loudest get heard and thus listened to the most.

      Edit: typos, commas.

Maybe I'm too quick to think things might not be instantly negative, but I didn't read this as encouraging someone banned to sneak onto a game this way.

We're bad as a collective on giving people even second chances, let alone 3/4/5th. If someone ACTUALLY is able to change then this isn't all a bad list of things to do. If you've changed enough to be able to handle this, then I think they deserve the anonymity.
      Just my opinion.

Weyrlinghood is flat out the absolute worst time to play a dragon rider imo. You are limited in what you can rp thematically and by rule, everyone is still judging you despite search being over, etc. It's the worst.

When people do things for your character that are completely unexpected and are kind enough you cry IRL because it's just so nice.

    • RE: Disabilities and Mental Illness as Character Traits

I feel like it comes down to respect.

I'm not quite sure how to quantify 'respect' though. If anyone has words here I would love to take them.

I know what respect ISN'T when I see it better. Like if someone uses their character's disability or mental illness as an excuse to do shitty things, that isn't respect. Another is if they use it as the only defining characteristic for their character, and there isn't anything deeper going on.

Also if they joke about the disability or mental illness in ooc - "omg my character is soooo <insert thing here> hahahaha," then they aren't being respectful either.

    • RE: Recycling characters

I have those characters I loved that just didn't work on the game I made them. Dragons especially from Pern. I loved my one green from PW I rewrote to fit me (and then got yelled at by the area staff for doing so because "we're not Fort Weyr"), and a blue from NorCon. Both of them got new homes with new PCs on HT. My Ha'ze and Kai from PW got ported over whole scale from PW to HT because I wasn't letting him go.

So I don't mind when people do it. As long as they fit the theme then I'm a whole pile of 'whatever'.
