Hour and a half until EA on BG3. I think the waiting is going to kill me. I took today off from work for this. So excited.

RE: Eliminating social stats
@deadculture Yeah, except I'm not sure how you expect anyone to be able to pick up on whether your character is lying or not when you don't actually pose the cues that would suggest they were doing so. Of course it's way easier to get away with lying when you don't have to actually roll to back it up, you just get to lie. People tend to believe shit unless you give them a reason not to. The ability to get away with lying is actually less about how awesome of a poser someone is than you seem to think.
ETA: For the record, I play a lying character who lies, and I roll. I roll for it a LOT. Unprompted. Because I need to know how successful the character is at concealing her shit, NOT how successful I am at oocly fucking obfuscating things.

RE: Big city grids - likes and dislikes
Please stop trolling in game development. I'm not a mod or anything, but I think folks would generally prefer that threads not get taken over by that sort of thing in this forum section.

RE: Valorous Dominion
I am going to be making a character here at some point soon. Been poking around at things. Not there yet, though.

RE: Make MSB great again!
I do not think this site should touch on handling issues that happen anywhere else but this site. So if the harassment can be pointed at here and whatnot, yes, please, deal with it. But certain people like to make accusations of harassment against people who they have extensively harassed, and also accused people of harassment for things like leaving their game. Too much potential crazy. But the PM thing, where people repeatedly message folks after they say stop, that should be actionable. And traditionally has been.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
This is really, really, really bad. I am super uncomfortable with how these things are being handled in the present sense. Like I can't even get my words together to coherently object to what is being done in this thread because all I want to do is gibber and point. What. The. Hell.

Why is it so hard to believe that someone might want BOTH types of RP?
It isn't. In my example though I was referring specifically to someone who wants mostly TS, and doesn't intend to play the overall game either way.
Let's not let TS distract us here though (since it tends to take over conversations - perhaps I shouldn't have used it at all) since it was just one example.
It feels like to me that it was an example of a false principle to begin with, though. Managing player expectations is one thing. Dealing with the VERY SMALL number of people who are interested only in X type of RP is another. Managing healthy expectations is one conversation. Dealing with a tiny population of problem players is something different. I don't really feel like focusing on people who are only after one kind of RP is productive, as they aren't the problem being discussed here. They are SO RARE as to nearly be unicorns, really. But they're often trotted out all the same whenever 'player expectations' comes up, as if these specific people are what the conversation is about.

RE: Dreamwalk MUSH
I'm not interested in persuading you or changing your mind about a design choice in making your game. It's clear you feel the way you do about it. I might find it personally terrible, but my recourse is very easy for me: don't play. I am just asking on behalf of other people (please do feel free to ignore my request) that you make your priorities VERY CLEAR so that nobody spends the time to engage and invest only to have to walk away because of your design choices.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
I do not feel heard, at all. I do not feel as if you are listening to me, I feel as if you are trying to silence the topic. That said, fine. However, if you are not going to call Auspice on something publicly, do not then call out someone else who does object. If Auspice says something, and you need to speak with Auspice about it, and you acknowledge that you need to speak with Auspice about it, DO NOT then turn around and ONLY mod-voice at the person in public who she was nasty to who then responded appropriately.
Me: Blah.
Mod1 as not mod: you're an idiot.
Me: uh, hey, jerk, you're an idiot.
Other-mod: STOP TALKING TO MOD1 that way.At that point it does not MATTER if you took Mod1 aside privately or not.

RE: Potential Buffy Game
But I want to play Buffy. Not Buffy on Venus or Buffy in Space or Buffy in Wakanda. None of the suggestions you've made sound like much fun to me at all, and they surely don't sound like Buffy to me. 'Generic small town with a big college' IS Buffy. Like if you don't like the premise or the show or the themes or whatever, that's fine? But 'make a D&D game except no swords and no wizards and no castles' ? Er. What ZG's proposed is EXACTLY what I'm hoping for from a Buffy game, personally.

RE: The 100: The Mush
They are nice people that are bad at running games long term, from what I could tell. I bailed a while ago. They made some really bad design decisions for the resources they had available (just them). They pushed themselves at a rate initially that simply isn't possible to sustain long-term, people got used to it, and then it killed things when they scaled back to something more reasonable.
They tried. It was a good shot, and I hope they learned about pacing for their next project, if they have one. I'd play under them again, provided they demonstrated that lessons were learned.
I'm a little uncomfortable with how much focus and spotlight the two of them both had around their own characters and stories, but it never crossed into intolerable for me. Cost of doing business with that type of game.
ETA: In my opinion, the problem was incompetence, not any maliciousness.

@Sunny If you're going to use words like "abusive" or "unethical", the burden is on you to define and explain those terms. they don't mean "things I don't like".
HE POSTED THE FUCKING DEFINITION (which you then mocked him for). It was spot on. These peoples' behavior IS abusive, whether you like it or not. It's not 'locked me in a closet without food for a week' abusive, no, but in the CONTEXT of a MUSH ENVIRONMENT it absolutely IS abusive and it IS unethical.
ETA: And for that matter the statement that it can't be abusive because you can turn off the computer and walk away? I have very strong words for this. I am angry that you said this.

RE: Reporting Roadblocks: Denial, Fear, Shame, Guilt, Embarrassment, etc.
@meg said in Reporting Roadblocks: Denial, Fear, Shame, Guilt, Embarrassment, etc.:
And honestly, if you don't want anything to happen to the person from your reporting, then you still aren't /reporting/ the behavior. The conversation is still 'how can a game make reporting more likely'. Your conversation is a different one. Your conversation is 'how can I be a supportive friend and just listen to someone's shitty experience', which doesn't require it being staff or not.
This. I don't think the question is 'how can we help victims come forward and talk about their experiences', it's 'how can we encourage reporting'. They're very different conversations. Frankly, in a staff capacity, someone telling me something while saying they want no action taken regarding it is less than useless. It does not help them. It does not help me. If all that's desired is someone to talk to about what happened, there are several chat-based services on the internet involving people with training as to specifically how to deal with this sort of conversation. If that's what somebody is after, that is what somebody should be doing.
If I am unable to act on what I am told, what is the purpose of telling me? I can't help make things safer for the person telling me. I can't help make things safer for anybody else. I'm not trained to be of actual assistance in these matters, and could actually end up doing real psychological harm by trying to do so. So, seriously: who does it benefit to encourage someone to come to me with things I cannot take action on? It does not even benefit the victim.
ETA: Also, survivor here. So yes, I am allowed to have an opinion on this topic before someone gets into "oh you just couldn't understand" because I do.

RE: Web portals and scenes and grids oh my!
It's not a criticism, it's a difference in preferences and a square peg with a round hole.
eta: I honestly do not at all understand the INSISTENCE that a particular tool is good at all the jobs, rather than just the job that it was designed to do. It's NOT good at all the jobs, but it IS good at its job. It's not a criticism to say that you can't use your lawnmower to clean your effing pool!

RE: The 100: The Mush
I've already gone into detail in this very thread about the issues I have with the staffing and style that the two of you go with. I think a sandbox game is one of the roads that you guys can go to avoid the problems, you're doing it, I don't have a problem with that at all. But @Ghost, nasty as he's been about it, does have a point. I witnessed the stuff he's complaining about personally, on The 100. I think you're a lovely person, your husband as well, but I don't think either of you should ever, ever run a public game with just the two of you. You have no balancing factors, no one to reality check you, no one to bounce stuff off of. You provide an echo chamber for one another. Not always a problem with everyone who does these things by themselves in a pair, but in the case of the 100, you shut out and shut down a portion of your playerbase because of it, and y'all made some really, really bad decisions.
