RE: How Best To Help
For me, it depends on the information entirely. The method in which I prefer to digest that varies heavily based on what information it is. The piece for me that is VITAL is that whatever question I asked is the one that is answered, because if I want to know where I can find something, I will ask 'where can I find something', and if I want an explanation I'll ask 'how does it work' or something.
ETA: Very little drives me as batshit as someone assuming I didn't mean the question I asked (bonus points if it's because I'm a woman who couldn't possibly understand the answer, which I run into in the tech field pretty regularly) and answering what they think I SHOULD have asked, instead. 'Did you mean...' is OK. 'Well, I know you asked where to find it, but the book is really complicated and the system varies, and basically just roll X and Y and your difficulty in this situation is Z' is not.

RE: IRL Space Trucking begins?
It's way more good than it is bad, and I think that it exploding like that is part of the development process (so to speak). I am quite sure they learned an incredible amount, and I love that the little caption at the bottom was all "S9 Next!"

RE: Ruins of Pern - Discussion
Masterharper of Pern is absolutely the best of the bunch.

RE: How are you coping with COVID (and other 2020 fun)?
I’m mostly bewildered. If this was due to one stupid comment that was not even that bad, not 10 minutes after I said I was really struggling with shit...it makes zero sense. But if there were other cues or I should have picked up on something... I mean, I didn’t. It’s possible, but I can’t even begin to imagine why. But I was blocked, and it does not appear to have been a technical issue. I am really bad at determining whether someone is actually my friend I guess. Idk.

RE: What's your favorite MU* client?
I switched to Potato 'cos Ixy actively used more colors than Simplemu handled on his default codebase setup and he talked me into just LOOKING at it after a years-long, stubborn refusal to even consider switching. I immediately fell in love with the double input window and haven't gone back, even with losing inline spellcheck and spawns that work (I'm inept and can't get Potato's spawns to work).

What has made you feel appreciated at a job you have worked at, currently, previously, or hopefully?
Exec calling my team out in a way that made it clear they actually understood what they were praising us for. Sincere recognition of actual accomplishments, not platitudes. It was hands down the best work moment I've had, having the executive team praise my team in front of everyone else in a way that made it really clear that what we were doing was helpful and it really mattered.
ETA: the gift card for Amazon with the handwritten note from council was nice, but seriously, the understanding/recognition combo was what did it.

RE: How To Treat Your Players Right
I agree 100%. I think it would be worthwhile to better explore ways to be trustworthy to players, for this sort of discussion. Like, I think anonymous complaints are a trap for everyone involved with disastrous long-term negative repercussions on the health of any game. It ultimately erodes the trust between staff and players, rather than helping. I can go down that rabbit hole in explaining if people want me to, but what it boils down to is that anon complaints are disappearing into the ether; if the person is anything but very publicly banned, complaints become meaningless because there's no conversation, no way to get further information, no explanation, no dialogue, no nothing. Complain, then pray. It gets worse from there.
If the problem in this case we are trying to solve is people being concerned about other people knowing it was them that complained, I think better would be to say: we have a rule on this game that staff does not discuss complaints outside of X and Y situations, with Z people. Anyone who breaks this rule, in any circumstance, will be removed from staff.
And then you follow through.
So really, I think it behooves all of us to step back and look at the actual problem that needs to be solved, and how we (as staff) can make ourselves trustworthy for our players in that way (not that I'm staffing any more, but the theoretical is fun). What can we do to say: you can trust me to do the right thing in this type of situation? What promises CAN be made?

if you have a wizbit it takes two seconds to find the job and figure out who wrote it
If you have people with wizbits doing that shit, you've got a lot more problems.
Besides, it's more for player peace of mind than actual security.
Are you just not reading what other people are writing fully, or...?

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
I'm sorry that you're going through this, I don't really have words for how terrible it is. I really hope you manage to come out the other side before things blow up on you further.

RE: If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP
There is a difference between 'being disruptive' and 'doing something I don't like'. Wrongfun revolves around the latter; rulebreaking and enforcement is where the former comes in. YOU are using the word incorrectly for rulebreaking / being disruptive / being a problem, and that's not what it means. Just because 'wrong' and 'fun' are used doesn't mean that it applies to every instance of someone's fun being wrong. It's not 'wrongfun' to harass somebody -- it's harassing somebody. And so on.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
She didn't. @Cupcake said "accuse", which is possible by sharing somebody else's post.
eta: this thing you're "correcting" never happened. Cupcake did NOT say "she went on to say" and she did NOT attribute the words themselves to the woman, so maybe you should slow your roll about OTHER people putting words in peoples' mouths.

RE: Difference between an NPC and a Staff PC?
What I'm hearing, here, at the base level, is that it doesn't sound like people think that Staff NPCs should be used for Personal Plots for PCs. It's the personal that's the issue, not the content? Is this a better understanding?

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
“Israel created Hamas SIMPLY to justify their actions” seems pretty fucking cut and dry anti-Semitic to me. YMMV I guess.

RE: Difference between an NPC and a Staff PC?
There is a very wide gulf between what I am saying and 'CoI rules are stupid'.
If you think sex/romance roleplay elements are more significant/meaningful/important/powerful than others, that's a different conversation. I maintain that they are story/plot/roleplay elements just like every other story/roleplay/plot element.
ETA: I do not equate roleplayed sex out to real life sex, in the balance of power scenario, and find the comparison distasteful. A PC having sex with an NPC is in no way the same situation as a student having sex with their professor. This particular RL comparison is, to me, offensive. Sex as a story element? Fine. Sex as an abuse of power? Not fine. TS =/= RL Sex.
ETA2: I have an ENORMOUS eleventy billion sized problem with staffers having RL sex with players for bennies, for the record.

RE: Difference between an NPC and a Staff PC?
One of the absolute coolest scenes I have ever gotten to do, as a player, was the seduction and subsequent murder of a BBEG. Had my character not been able to seduce that NPC, she would not have been able to murder them. Were there rules against NPCs being able to participate in sexual/romantic roleplay, it would not have gotten to happen. That would have been sad.
ETA: There were MONTHS put into leadup RP for this, for the record. It wasn't like a scene in the bar. It was a long plot with a climax (ha ha) that was amazing.

RE: RL things I love
Training somebody who WANTS to learn what I am showing them. It is such a gift, when most of the teaching I do is to...less than receptive audiences.
