I apologize, but I don't understand how that makes a difference. If It's PTO that's used for being sick, and you're rewarding people for not using PTO at all, then...it's rewarding people for coming to work sick, whether you call it Sick Leave, PTO, or lollipop time.
In Ohio
...Ah, sorry. Did not realize the OP was in Ohio.
As for rewarding people for not using their leave, I'm not sure how to get around your accusation.
It's not an accusation? It's just fact. Rewarding people for not using sick leave encourages them to come in sick. Paying MORE for your sick leave the more of it you have not used (which is what is going on here as per the OP on the topic; you get more money for your sick leave the more sick days you have not used) is significantly worse than cashing out at the end of employment/the year (which I also think is a TERRIBLE idea, though not quite AS bad). ESPECIALLY if you're only paying at a level that keeps people utterly desperate (like teachers).
Ohio is WEIRD for having separate sick leave AND cashing it out -- that is NOT normal; I have honestly never heard of cashing out sick leave at the end of the year; only PTO or Annual or Vacation, specifically because of the problems with rewarding sick leave not being taken. I would be REALLY interested in the data regarding communicable diseases in public service in that state, tbh. I imagine it would make a statistically significant difference, though I also expect they haven't studied it. (The impact of cashing out sick leave on the transmission of disease isn't something that's going to make anybody any sort of money. Sigh.)
eta: I'm a little irritated about this in general; we've had multiple people show up in person to work now while actively symptomatic with COVID. My (high risk) boss got it from one of them and was out for a month and a half, and now one of my other (high risk) coworkers (one of our few required in office folks) is down with it, too. I cannot imagine how I would feel if it turned out that my kid's teacher gave my kid COVID because they couldn't afford to take the day off (were my kid still in school). There's inherent risk from other kids and a whole host of other things, but it would be AWESOME if we could not add "people are trying to hide their symptoms and working anyway to avoid getting financially dinged" to the risk factors.

Rewarding people with financial value if they don't use days is straight up encouraging people to work sick.
My reading of the original post is that this is a discussion on PTO, rather than sick leave. In Ohio, these are separate kinds of leave, but both are compensable in the public sector.
I apologize, but I don't understand how that makes a difference. If It's PTO that's used for being sick, and you're rewarding people for not using PTO at all, then...it's rewarding people for coming to work sick, whether you call it Sick Leave, PTO, or lollipop time.
If they are separate pools, and the benefit is NOT applied to "sick leave" as a separate pool, certainly that changes the situation, but the situation actively being discussed does not sound like there are separate Annual Leave and Sick Leave pools, but instead a singular "paid time off" pool.

Anything that encourages people to work sick during a pandemic is a bad idea, leaving aside all of the other issues with such a policy. Rewarding people with financial value if they don't use days is straight up encouraging people to work sick.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
Venmo is [redacted]. Thank you both for the thought. Accepting help is hard, but I sure do have a great support network. We’re gonna be ok I think. I have somewhere to stay that is safe now (and not a hotel), and I feel safer here than I have the last few years, so that’s helpful. A good place to be for finding our own place. The rental market is scary right now, but I have faith something is out there.
My brain is basically non functional right now. I think I hit my limit of what I can handle sometime yesterday.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
Screaming match with my mother that would sound unbelievable if I explained it, including mocking me for my anxiety/panic attacks and then literally hollering at me because my tone was defensive in response. That is the most believable part.
Because I left my 22 year old at home overnight without supervision. That was the issue. He is not capable of living on his own, but he is absolutely capable of not needing a fucking babysitter.
ETA: my boss, who is also her best friend, has put me up in a hotel for the night and we’ll be making a plan tomorrow morning. I’m sure we’ll be fine. I am…not, right now. The only people who seem to believe me are the people that actually know my mother.

Abruptly lost my housing tonight. In a hotel for the time being. Not sure how much more the universe thinks I can handle, but hey. At least I managed to pick up the cremated remains from the post office today and don’t have to struggle over that. Whee. I am so fucked.

Lol. Right.
Seriously though. The folks running Microsoft’s gaming division love games, at the end of the day. Their business decisions show that. I am pretty positive that this is going to pan out great for gamers.

Like tbh the newest xpac for Minecraft and the upcoming one, they have all the goodwill from me they could possibly get. It’s SO good, and it is a display of the understanding of their player base. ActiBliz lost their way when they lost touch with their fans, and so hopefully being pulled into Microsoft’s house will force them to reforge that connection.

RE: General Video Game Thread
Everything Obsidian is doing/has done. Forza. Game Pass. Minecraft. Bethesda's ship being righted (whether or not FO76's playerbase has come back, it's clear that Microsoft is taking an active hand at course correcting it). Halo.
There's SO many good things coming out of them as a publisher, and they are well poised to address the ROT at Blizzard. If they get rid of Bobby, they have my vote.

RE: General Video Game Thread
That is so exciting.
Microsoft’s gaming side has thus far only been an improvement to those IPs they have acquired that I have been invested in. I have been thrilled with the Xbox gaming studios content pretty across the board, and we’re already starting to see an impact on the Bethesda stuff (speculation from what I’ve seen, not necessarily fact).
Given the shithole that is currently Activision/Blizzard, and Phil?? (I think his name is Phil)’s comments on the acquisition, this is going to be an improvement. I don’t know if it will be enough to save WoW, but it surely won’t get WORSE.

I hate it when my jokes don't land and people take the stupid shit I say seriously. oh. my. god.

RE: The Work Thread
I meet with my entire team twice daily on zoom and have since the start of the pandemic. We have an individual miss one on occasion, but.
Yeah. Since the start of the pandemic.
I am not complaining TOO much, because it means the WFH folks (myself and another high risk person) stay REALLY connected and don't feel isolated like has happened to a lot of WFH people. But oh man.
(ETA: to be fair we're IT so we have things to talk about this much but oh my god so much of my life is in meetings now)

My Secretlabs chair was nearly life changing, because sitting in it never hurts me. Definitely recommend.

RE: RL Anger
If one more person tries to blame the recent tragedy in my life on the COVID vaccine I am going to stab somebody in the damn face.
The number of times I have now been asked, "Was he vaccinated?" and then got a knowing "ohhhhhhhhh" after is DISGUSTING, leaving me to either explain the gory details of why I know it wasn't that, or letting them think that my partner's death helps justify them continuing to put everyone else at risk.

So, on a day when my current job is sucking eggs...
I have started receiving equipment from the job due to start next week. I didn't get a confirmation email, but I think sending me an expensive monitor might supersede that.
I cannot tell you how relieved I am to hear this news. Probably only a fraction of what you're feeling though, so I'm sure you get it. Thank the stars.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I am actually a terrible person, or I suppose I can just be bought? My desire to mitigate my pain has proven to be stronger than my ethics; stupid WoW has become a fixation. I think I'm feeling the urge to play so strongly because 1- I'm in crisis (and this has long been a way for me to vent some of that pressure, and 2- I have told myself NO (and because it's off limits it becomes much more attractive).
BLEH.
