I think to social part would be hard to teach since there is no one set standard. Take something as simple as joining a scene in progress on the grid. (Not wanting to restart that at all just using an example) Not only do different games have different protocols but also a lot of players feel very strongly on it in very different ways. I would be wary of teaching a new person what is acceptable based on on game or group of games and then having that person instead be drawn to a different group of games. Entering with incorrect knowledge can often be worse than entering with no knowledge at all.

RE: Dark Metal - Still Up
I actually PKed someone that attacked me my first night on DM. It was wild, still the only PK I have done in my mushing career.
For it's rep which in many ways was deserved it was a lot of fun, and even with the worst staff it was usually very easy to avoid them and have fun. -
RE: [Ethnicity Thread] Who Do You Think You Are?
Fairly recently immigrated on all sides, as in 20th century so not as mixed as many Americans, 5/8ths German a Quarter Irish, and an 1/8th Czech .
Though that is discounting any of the various mixing that happened everywhere in Europe for basically ever, but without some expensive DNA testing that is the basics. -
RE: D&D 5E
Yeah, they wanted to make the setting more accessible and blah blah missed the point of it blah blah. ^^
And that seems so weird to me because what makes a setting interesting to me is having that backdrop to put my adventures into. Same thing with the City by Night, or Rage across Land, books from Whitewolf. I have never used the plots mentioned in those book but that structure helps me come up with a ton of ideas to run within those frameworks.

RE: Optional Realities & Project Redshift
the coded system thing makes me think anyplace using Faraday's system would count for that. Combat is truly automated, you type in the command to attack and the game handles the result and spits out where you were hit and the severity of the resulting wound. Though I am not sure death is possible through the automation I know it has happened at places using it.

The biggest issue now with Avalon Hill is 'do you have the hours in the day.' So many of their games take so damn long to play.
That is why tablets exist you record what units are in what hex, etc and make sure everything that needs to be is noted and then finish playing next time. It's like saving a game with out the technology.
Note: By tablets I meant the paper kind, I often forget the other kind exist as i did in this post. -
RE: What's missing in MUSHdom?
the thing with Anything Steve Jackson though is that he has expressly said MUSHes etc are not allowed to use his stuff.
The exception being the setting for In Nomine (likely because it is owned by a french company and licensed for English by Steve Jackson games.) -
RE: Goetia: nWod 2nd Edition and Crossover - Seeking Staff
@The-Tree-of-Woe
You tell the player that is not how things work in this place, and if they cannot fit in then gently or not so gently show them the door.
While Gany and I disagree on many things one thing we fully agree on is that games should be dictatorships. If you have a stated policy and a player refused to comply I fail to see how PvP rp solves it better then actually sitting down the player and telling them what kind of game they are on.
Granted I am not associated with this game at all, but this sort of set up is pretty common in the the MU world though not so much in the WoD sections.
Now will the WoD player base accept an attempt at a different culture or will it all end in tears who knows but I do wish them the best of luck and always appreciate attempts at something a bit out of the ordinary. -

@Monogram Well if you don't want a local team and of the three that used to be local Detroit was your best option, but bleh Detroit, then you should clearly be a Tampa Bay Lightning fan, since Stevie Y was the best part of the Red Wings and is now the TBL GM.
As someone who has hated the Wings for as long as I can remember, I do have to grudgingly agree with this, Steve Yzerman is and always has been awesome.

RE: D&D 5E
I would be wary of including too much Lords and Ladies into a D+D game. Though I say this as someone who does not like lords and ladies and would in theory be interested in a D+D game. Despite the similar settings the focus on the games are different, Lords and Ladies at least in the iterations I have seen focus on the higher levels of society and political matters, where as D+D is about adventurers (who can come from all parts of society but tend to function on it's edges) and action. You might be able ot combine them as two separate spheres sharing a location, but with out this you will end up having one half becoming the dominant style of play.

RE: Goetia: nWod 2nd Edition and Crossover - Seeking Staff
Not really tell the folks who can't get along to play in separate rooms. If they refuse that boot them both.
Now that was a bit flippant but really staff shouldn't have to play baby sitter if two adults really cannot get along and won't separate peacefully your game does not need either. -
RE: The Hockey Thread
@Ganymede
No cups in general would be a point against the GM I agree in this particular case I do not.
The three years before he got the job they missed the playoffs and in the seven years he has been on the job they have three appearances in the conference finals and one in the finals, each of those three years they lost to the eventual champions. Overall play off series record 7-4.
I don't see that as a bad record to point to, now if he never manages a Cup win as a GM that would be knock given his position or if after missing the playoffs this last season they continue to do so it is likely time for a change.
I don't think he is the best GM but he I would consider him better than most. -

Just how many "big moments" can you reasonably expect a Star Wars MUSH to have?
Fair enough I understand the paucity of big moments, but I don't understand why anyone should be expected to show up, be pointless, and then be happy about it.
Of someone show up to a scene and for whatever reason has all the impact on it as third extra on the left, I would not begrudge them complaining or just saying fuck it. Why should anyone spend 3 to 5 hours doing essentially nothing?
The main reason I avoid big scenes is that vary reason, if for example 12 people show up and lets say there are four planned moments assuming a fair and equal change of getting those moments I would have a 66.6 repeating % change of wasting my time. -
RE: Dust to Dust (Formerly the nWoD grenade thread)
Fair enough, but I'm curious as to your reasoning. Did people think "oh, I'm going to get XP for this crap? No way - I'm done here!" and stop running plot?
No. Staff teams essentially said 'whew, the players have mostly taken over storytelling' and stopped.
this right here is what I miss about the old days, staff plots even weather ones I would rather ignore do provide game unity, with out them I think games get to feel more like connected sandboxes then a unified whole.

RE: The Hockey Thread
I think it comes down to how do you define awesomeness, in a league with 31 teams, I would put him in the top 6 GMs, Yes below Holland, Lamariello, and Bowman who would be my pick for top GM currently and Top Coach ever. So he is better than 4/5 of those in his position.
I have no problem using awesome to describe someone who is in the top 20 percent of his field. (Granted this discounts hockey GMs of non-NHL leagues, but I follow none of the minor nor the Euro leagues enough to even begin to form opinion on them.) -

Actual minigame that I still tend to play ... bowling on modern MUs. Fun to play and pose around, winning or losing.
Along the same lines the coded pool game, I have seen a couple different versions places, I know the one on Fallcoast has the player input their relevant stats at the start. It is a lot of fun can generate RP since it is a good way to show off a characters mentality based on how they handle winning and losing games.
In general I prefer mini games that add some fun but are not required to play, if something becomes mandatory it loses a lot of the fun and becomes a chore. -
RE: Dust to Dust (Formerly the nWoD grenade thread)
I always thought it game from the terms Sphere of influence, though that was just my guess. If Staffer X was in charge of vaps that was her Sphere of influence and we just shorted it ot sphere. Though like i said thatwas just my assumption.

One of them was "who is Gotham? why is Batman trying to save him?" by a guy's wife... who laughed so hard he was 'asked' to sleep on the couch afterwards.
I am pretty sure if I had been the guy it would have ended the relationship. Not by my choosing but i would be unable to not back that periodically for the rest of my life until the point where she would kick my ass to the curb. All considered it might be a fair trade.

RE: MUSH Marriages (IC)
@lotherio
I would mentioned it to the middle party, mainly to see their reaction, if it is a quick, I will handle it or an apology no worries. However if they think it is cute or start making excuses for it that tells me I need to avoid two people not one.
I don't want to victim blame but I also don't want to becoming the unwilling third point in a triangle. -

I played there for a bit have have to agree, I mean TS is not hard to find if that is what you are seeking but I could say that exact same thing about any mush I have logged on to.
