      Side note - Cooperative tabletop games work by making it all about the group rather than the individual. The group wins or loses together.

      Another thing to note is that the group in these cases is most commonly a group of RL friends.
      If I am playing coop game I am a lot more likely sacrifice personal accomplishment for the over all success when the other players are my friends, with a group of strangers in person or on line I am much less likely to sacrifice personal gain even if it leads to the loss of the over all game.

    • RE: What do you look for in a game?

      For me it is two things really, co-operative OOC atmosphere and availability of the spheres I feel like playing.
      No place is perfect and while there are a lot of things that i would want that would make me like games more those are the two basic qualities a game needs to get me to play there.

      @Arkandel said in Finding roleplay:

      To take this thread in a slightly different direction... do you think incentivizing public scenes helps in practice?

      that depends on how you go about incentivizing it. Remember you will get the behavior you reward not necessarily the ones you want. +votes means you will get a lot of big scenes with folks showing up for the xp bounty more then the rp. The per pose or time in a room with someone ways will also be gamed in a similar matter as shown my HM. I don't think these systems are bad per se, and they will increase the rp going on but be sure that is the rp you want to foster before implementing them.
      I would tend to avoid a plus vote system because for me personal I have had more scenes killed for me by folks zerg rushing a hangout with a few people in it to get votes then I think it produces but I also prefer smaller scenes.

    • RE: Coming in 2016 - Bump in the Night

      @Kanye-Qwest
      Sometimes the OOC asking can lead to more IC acceptance.
      If I am in a public scene or a scene that has gone private scene in a public place I have no problem with people joining I ma in an IC public place after all.
      But how you enter and join in appropriate. If someone tosses out Hey mind if I join? I will find a way to include them regardless of the spindling of IC mindset i might have to do to make that possible. We are all in the game together after all.
      However if they say nothing OOC but just enter and start posing, to be this comes off as mildly rude. Not a big deal but still noticeable. In that case I would only involve them if it was what i think the my character would do and even then likely subconsciously lean a bit to the cool at best response to that person.

    • RE: Original Sci-Fi?

      I think one of the big issues is that everyone has a different breaking point for suspension of disbelief and it often hinges on their own experiences. For example in sci fi for me, as long as the techno-babble is internally consistent I can roll with it, but internal inconsistency will drive me bonkers.
      I realize his is not true for everyone so if i am in a situation where people are discussing the nuts and bolts I basically smile and nod.

      Also on the Russian ark, watch it if you have not seen it. It is one of those movies that everyone should see once. It is a gorgeous movie and the fact that is it one continuous shot is simply amazing to me. (The documentary of the making of the movie In One Breath is also well worth the watch, if only to make the accomplishment of the film itself seem more impressive.)

      @Auspice said in RL Anger:

      But I swear to god, people who are just picky eaters who want free food catered to their preferences drive me up a wall. Esp. the 'I only eat like a five year old' types.

      I'm sorry. Grow up. Learn to try new foods. I was never more offended than the time my roommate wanted to introduce us to his girlfriend, we invited her to dinner, I cooked a big meal, she showed up... and snubbed the whole thing and refused to even try any because 'I only eat pizza, nuggets, and burgers.'

      I have to put a hunk of the blame for that diet on the parents, I would not have gotten away with that even at five. Dinner was made if i didn't try something the option was not eat. My parents would never have forced me to eat something and if I tried something and didn't like it that was one thing but if I just straight up refused to try something I would have not eaten that night.
      I am afraid if I invited an adult to dinner and they did something like that i would just shrug and eat and not for a second feel bad about it.

      @Tempest said in Making Territory Relevent:

      @Ganymede said in Making Territory Relevent:

      You can disagree all you want. I'm just taking my response from basic economic theories.

      These are games, where most players are primarily focused on their ego and stroking their epeen because those are the themes of the games.

      That just means that the ability to stroke ego and epeen are the commodities, basic economics would still apply.
      Ganny aptly said what economics isn't a study of, but I will go ahead and say what it is. It is the study of how limited resources are used to satisfy unlimited wants. (There is always unlimited wants.)
      If your players want titles for no other reason than ego that is fine, make sure there is a limited number of them and players will fight just as strongly for them as powergamers would over limited set of mechanical benefits.

    • RE: The 100: The Mush

      @Kestrel
      Since this is your first MUSH I will do this as sort of a PSA, the big downside to the more OOCly open culture of a MUSH is that people will tend to know others from game to game and this can lead to grudges that get carried over as well. Like the example here where it seems some have from 5th world.
      WoD and Superhero games definitely have some of this as well.
      For the most part if you can keep your head down and let the drama flow around you you should be alright.

    • RE: XP Tax

      I think the system could work mechanically, though socially it is gonna be a hard sell.
      There are a fair number of players that like the pretty dots on their sheets and taking them away will lead to discontent.
      Yes I know you said the dates of the taxes will be known in advance but trust me that will not help people prepare for it. Many people fail to me ready for RL income taxes and the dates for that is known well in advance. The whole reason we have withholding out of paychecks now is that when the income tax was first a thing people did not prepare despite knowing it was coming leaving the govt with one hell of a collection job, now the govt had to power to compel people to prepare after that with withholding but for those in business for themselves or who are considered independent contractors it is still an issue.
      Running a MU entails dealing with tons of drama I see this as creating more when one solution has existed and has been mentioned in this thread, which having beats be worth less of an XP as people raise in experience. this will function as a tax on the XP earned rather then spent, but it is also a "tax" that will be socially easier to implement since no one actually loses anything in the process they just have to wait longer for gains as they increase in total XP.

      Edit to add: I just thought of another possible issue with taxing the dots on a sheet, since there is a fairly decent number of starting dots given in c-gen this would create an initial tax burden for those who make character near tax time might not have time to earn enough to pay.

      Orville.

      Just sayin.

      AI almost upvoted this than I remembered what MUSHers do to settings, why would you wish this on a promising show?
      Plus MU players really don't do humor well for the most part and without the humor it would be TNG. (That is not a bad thing but the pitfalls of Trek mushes have been well discussed.)

      There must be a lot more to Starship Troopers than the god awful movies, based on all the people interested in MUing in the setting.

    • RE: Class/Society Systems, WoD

      One thing I would include is the ability for people with the proper skills/powers to spoof a class they are not. After all that is what a con man or professional spy does in a lot of stories, heck even Sherlock Holmes would disguise himself as a beggar to ferret out information in places where he would stick out.
      This would also have the added benefit of giving tangible benefits to the subterfuge skill while side stepping the usual social skills arguments.

      As one of the more vocal supporters of a more vitriolic less be friendly happy times atmosphere for the place even I think there should be limits, for example since the forum is about games stick to things that are about games. for example I have zero issue calling someone who lies and cheats on said games "a lying cheating piece of shit."
      But racist, sexist and other crap like that that effects games not at all should not be around. Hell even if you want to tear someone a new asshole verbally there are far better and more creative ways to do that.

    • RE: Young Justice / Teen Titans MUX

      If we are throwing out names, and including legacy heroes. You could always go with the debut versions of Infinity Inc, who were all in late teens/early twenties when that series started and add:
      Jade
      Obsidian
      Nuklon
      Fury
      Silver Scarab
      Brianwave Jr.
      Dr Midnight II
      Wildcat II
      And not canon associated with the teams but in the same rough age group would possibly pull in Connor Hawke and Vibe as well.

    • RE: Big city grids - likes and dislikes

      @faraday said in Big city grids - likes and dislikes:

      I disagree though about the lack of spontaneous encounters. I don't really see a practical difference between wandering to "Big City - Sleazy Strip" on the grid and doing scene/start Big City - Sleazy Strip=public. Both can park your character in the Sleazy Strip with a hint (in the case of a grid) or an expressed intent (in the case of the scene system) of being open to RP in that location.

      There might not be a code difference but to me there is a huge psychological one. If it is a spot on grid and I am feeling like RP I will wander to the hangout and ask if people mind if i join. I would never do this for a scene in a creative room even if it was set public because if the people wanted me there they would invite me and it is their place since they just made it. Where on grid to me is more like hanging out in an RL public space more of an implied hey we are hanging out.
