I don't fly my nerd flag but I also don't hide it. I usually mention comics right away since I have a bunch and they take up a lot of space so not really something I can hide. About date 3 I mention being a wrestling fan since that is also a niche pursuit though a more accepted one then rpgs. At date five I mention the RPGs my reasoning for this is that while I don't want to hide things but I want the change to show I am not defined by somewhat odd hobbies and i have found if you spring all three at once it tends to set out a lot of alarms. Possibly not among the generation younger then me but since my dating range is 30 to 50 or so they still have a lot of the older mindset.

@Luna
I always say it in my head as U sec ... almost like he is going for a subtle way of saying the reader sucks. -
RE: Star Wars: Age of Alliances
the few times I have attempted Star Wars games I made a fighter pilot so this really does not concern me directly in this instance but I could never understand the premise of hey play this thing you don't want to and maybe later you can play what you want.

@Ghost
I agree. The mechanics take a bit of getting used to but are kinda fun for a change of pace.
Though you forgot the top scale, the space stuff with the fleet and even more Mi go stuffs to fight. though that part of the setting is less dark then the Earth bound stuff, but I likes it, mostly because I like playing a space fighter pilot. always have since I was a kid and saw Star Wars in the theatre. (the 81 re-release.) -
RE: MSB alias/username
It was the name I had on Wora.
Also I chose it because while I have been on a lot of games with a lot of drama for the most part it misses me. I just tend to be that guy over there, so I dropped the over to be ThatGuyThere.
Also in my more trolly moments I do take more pleasure then I should in being "That Guy." -
RE: How hard should staff enforce theme?
Most fiction focuses on the exceptions to the standard rules, it should not come as a shock that quite a number of players will want to play this.
If you decide to vigorously enforce theme that is the staff's call to make but just realize it will be a full time job. And each time you are tired and decide oh I don't want ot bother with that know you will lose the theme you want just a bit. -
RE: Kinds of Mu*s Wanted
Unknown armies would be great, though could be a pain to code given the free form nature of skills.

RE: Pay to Play MUSHing?
Because it is a new year and about to start the hell that is taxes soon my thoughts on running a pay mush even if all the cash goes to charity is find a good accountant. Even non-profits pay taxes, and people that donate money will want receipts so they can write it off on their taxes so also know that on top the normal mush head aches you will also be dealing with the government for things like tax numbers and all that fun stuff.
On a personal level I would not play on one simply because there are already plenty of free games that provide the exact same service.

It is also access denied if you try to go there.

RE: Spying on players
@Apos
For me it would depend on the mood sometimes you have had a really hectic day and just want a nice slow social scene to relax those times I would very much object to random plot showing up.
Most times I would be yay plot but sometimes the answer would be, hey I am just trying to chill here. -
RE: Spying on players
I have had staff pop into rooms where I have been rping to observe rp and when visible I think it is cool and a good way to keep tabs on things. Doing it unannounced and invisible is hinky to me.

RE: Previously Mutants & Masterminds MUX, now a Question! DUN DUN DUN!
Another Superhero system worthy of note that focuses more on how powers effect the world around them rather then how much Captain X can lift is Smallville. It is also by Margaret Weis and uses a system that is similar to her Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, but does have c-gen rules and is more relationship and value driven. For example if Lois is an a building about to explode and Clark wanted to get there in time to safe her, he would roll a pool made up of his Love value, ( all the ratings in the system are between a d4 and a d12) His relationship with Lois dice, and a die based on his super speed.
Though the system is very much designed for games focused on a small number of players and would not be real good for a mush. -
RE: Previously Mutants & Masterminds MUX, now a Question! DUN DUN DUN!
My advice for newbies in the system is to just get your defence, to hit, damage and toughness to equal PL that will make you effective, then use whatever points you have left over which is normally a fair number to add the color/flavor you are wanting for the pc.
As far as barrier to entry it is likely a bit higher then the average rpg but on the lose side for superhero games. -
RE: thecoweyed - a playlist
I just wanted to say Zenobia was creepy fun to rp with.

RE: Fading Suns
Not to mention history classes in high school in general are worthless.
They barely mentioned the Federalists, a party that while brief did a large part of shaping the form of the government let alone anything that is out of the US.
College levels get better if you can get the right professor but that is a chance-y thing until you hit the 300 level of things. -
RE: Kinds of Mu*s Wanted
An idea that just popped into my head that could be all sorts of awesome but likely would never succeed :
Someone referred o Bane's old game as one that was pulp fiction, which is true but how about a Pulp Fiction game,
well not just a Pulp Fiction game but one set in the Tarantino movie verse.
You could have wild action loves of big plots and explosions, enough dark and gritty awesome to fit in.
Not sure what system I would use, maybe the new Spirit of 77 one but I have not bought and read that one yet, possibly just Feng Shui since it does action movies well and the Tarantino stuff definitely has a lot in common with he Hong Kong cinema action stuff. -
RE: Tanika @Age of Alliances
I don't mind games with a firm set canon, as long as that canon happens off screen. If you want to to rp a scene with a predetermined outcome weather to adhere to canon or just to help move a plot along count me out.
Note i have no problem getting together to plan out the story that happen for my char while x event happened I am just not going to rp it out in detail. -
RE: So not only is there no "ignore" feature...
@DnvnQuinn
But if we locked every pointless thread there would be no place for us to talk to each other. -
RE: Coming in 2016 - Bump in the Night
I would call Maryland Mid-Atlantic by region.
Most of the Civil War historical work I have seen terms it a Border State like KY, MO, and Delaware all Slaves states that remained Union but were very much internally split. For Maryland in particular you have Pro Confederate Riots in Baltimore as Union troops marched through, but Lincoln was in no way going to let Maryland go, and the Federal control was pretty strong.
Current culture wise it really in no way resembles the Northeast, granted my travels though both the Mid Atlantic and the North East have been on the brief side but not really the same cultural feel at all. -
RE: FFG Star Wars?
I am curious about the system. I do have a question, How easily/smoothly can you substitute normal dice for the specialty ones?
fore example, fate/fudge dice can easily be replaced by regular ones with a 1-2 being a minus, 3-4 being blank, and 5-6 being plus.
I know it is not logical but I will pay $50 for a game book but will not by funky dice even if they are cheap.
