@surreality
I play the places I can find fun trusting staff has nothing to do with it ever, except isn't a few cases like Spider but even with bad staffers she is her own special corner case of bad.
I don;t distrust staff anywhere i play but i do not trust them either.
Earlier you said staff shouldn't hand;e their own jobs? Well why not? If it is just about people you can trust either you can trust them to handle their own jobs or not at all right?
As far as trusting staff to play on a game, show me one places that has a policy that states you must trust staff to play here? I have yet to see it and i am one of the strange minority that actually reads news and policies.
Would I think RfKs policy to be necessary on all games? No but on a highly antagonistic atmosphere like a Vamp game yes i think it would me. For back up on that point please see every Fading Suns game attempted to date.

RE: A Post-Mortem for Kingsmouth
@surreality
But Staff are not like other players, knowing the people running things given inherent advantages. Not even in a deliberate sense but in a they I know how the boss thinks sense.
Are all staff no, but no one can tell me that none are. And yes some cheaters will likely find other ways to cheat, but just because my locked door won't stop a determined thief doesn't mean I plan on keeping mine open when I go to bed tonight.
Human beings are very fallible when it comes on picking out who is actually trustworthy and not,, so your wonderful policy of only hiring people you trust is likely just as useful as a locked door, it will keep some out but not all, and by your statement of that some will still cheat as a counter to other policies, well you as a human will still pick wrong.
I know I have trusted the wrong people before both online and off, so are you seriously claim you have never don't that or somehow immune for picking wrong again?
As far as returning heath to the hobby as you said at what moment has this hobby been healthy in regards to staff player relationships? I am sure we can point to particular games for a limited time but in general there has been a aura of mistrust on at least WoD games since the mid 90s. -
RE: A Post-Mortem for Kingsmouth
I know I ma tin the minority but I agree with the policy.
If it boils down that you can either trust people or not then why have a rule against staff handling their own jobs?
the thing is for the most part i do not know the various staffers places so there fore I do not trust them, just like i do not trust a random stranger on the street in real life so I know I give more attention to places with restrictive polices as a perspective player because while they might not be followed there is a change where games without out them are almost assuredly going to have issues.
I guess it come down to my disagreeing with @surreality belief that the good apples outnumber the bad,I do not believe this to be true in the MUSH world or the meat one. -
RE: Location, Location, Location: Where Do You Want to See Games?
I disagree somewhat. to me the grid can inspire rp. If walking the grid, which i do if I get bored because anything beats sitting in the OOC room, I have gotten inspired for scenes by the places or descs I have seen on grids. Now I definitely agree there should be temp room available or makeable for things that are not on grid or when you don't want to spend the time looking for the right place on grid.

RE: Kinds of Mu*s Wanted
Not sure on star Wars since my few mushing attempts at it usually ended with me getting real bored real quick.
For superheros I definitely think it has lead to more games, at least games being created. Most do not find a real player base and then end up ending fairly quickly as well, same could be said about any genre but Superhero in particular seems to have a faster life cycle then say WoD games from what I have seen.
As far as activities on individual games that has stayed the same for the most part, Superheros games do have a lot of sitting around oc til someone runs things but most people are ready and willing to rp if it gets mentioned, compared to WoD there the ooc room dwellers are less numerous but usually permanent residents. -
RE: Location, Location, Location: Where Do You Want to See Games?
Yeah Brooklyn as a room would be a bit too big, after all before it was fully incorporated into NYC it was it's own city and at the time the 4th largest by population in the US
So I second the neighborhoods, idea, after all there is a big difference between fancy parts of Brooklyn and Red Hook.
Honestly NYC might be a little big any one of the Boroughs would likely be plenty big enough to be a game city, after all most games I have seen call themselves NYC were just Manhattan Island for the most part anyway. -
RE: Fading Suns
Yeah the imperial power should be distant. And I say this as someone who on a fiction level loves the emperor being around and Imperial Sci-fi in general, I also tend to play imperial leaning nobles or outright Questing Knights. But I do thing that should be kept far in the background.
I also say this as a player who want more adventure in the setting. Hard to be adventurers in a place that is settled and has a lot of Imperial power set up, because they would be there to hand the issues adventures normally deal with. Barbarian incursion, well the army is right here, we pay taxes make them deal with it, instead i want barbarian incursion, well lets send a message out but it will be months before we get any back up and likely not even then so let go deal with it. How often in a vamp game does a high ranking US official show up, never that I have really seen, that is also how often a high ranking Imperial should show up in FS. -
RE: Kinds of Mu*s Wanted
It is the kinds of MUSHes wanted thread not kinds of MUSHed that would succeed, so with that in mind:
I desire for a MU* set in the World of Magnamar from the Lone Wolf Series of game books. I know there are at least two published game systems out there including one recently launched. -
RE: Where the hell is everyone?
I would not be surprised, after all KD has a lot going for it. Sane staff, friendly player base, and a theme that lets people get political. The fact that it has a familiar rules set means people might be more likely to give it s hot definitely.
I played there for a while but went the commoner route and ended up idling out when a couple key characters to mine ic either idled or retired. I have debated checking it out again with all the recent chatter and probably would if I had a character slot open. -
RE: Location, Location, Location: Where Do You Want to See Games?
I would play on an St. Lake City game as long as I could use Heroin Bob from SLC Punk as my played by.

RE: Fading Suns
Fair answers on the system thing, I wouldn't agree on the shadowrun thing but that is largely do to my dislike of the roll a bunch of dice and see which one count as a success core mechanic myself, even though WoD which uses the same is by far the game lines I have played the most both in TT and Online. Mainly because I do not like how they behave mathematically. I much prefer the BRP and FS core mechanic of trying to roll under a number based on your PC abilities and situational modifiers, or even the basic D20 and many other systems thing of rolling then adding and subtracting various things based on abilities and situations.
Like @bored I was mainly responding to the idea that FS is some how especially bad, I do consider it a better game then most out there.
As afar as the board game idea I think it could be interesting but only would concern the part of the mush I would avoid like the plague so no real response about that, Star Crusade focus on that aspect to it's detriment I think and from what i have heard that has also been the main focus of the FS MUSHes that preceded it Honestly if anew FS game shared that focus I would likely not bother even poking around it as a guest, since the biggest issues with Star Crusade and mentioned in this thread and elsewhere had little to do with mechanics and more to do with the people involved. And while I might be crazy at times I am not insane or stupid and the same setting, with the same focus would attract the same people which would lead to the same results. And while I do not regret playing on SC I have a lot of fun scenes on there and make a couple friendships with people I have played with other places since then I would not sign up for the ride knowing the likely result going into it. -
RE: Fading Suns
Like i said not wedded to the system nor crazy enough to ever make a mush it is more an intellectual exercise but to those that are against it I would ask what do you suggest in it's place?
I might well be in the minority when it comes to my preference of mechanics and theme working together, but mechanics can tell part of the story. I give equal weight to the RP and to the G parts of RPG.The two should work together not be at odds with each other. -
RE: Fading Suns
By fitting the genre I mean a couple of different things, first how combat flows, it is quick and decisive which to me fits the sources material I associate it with. Especially John Carter where the combats are written fast pace.
Second as it has been pointed out specialist are far more mechanically rewarded over generalists, this also fits the genre, besides the titled protagonist in planetary romance books, every character tends to have a specific niche that is what they are known for,. Since a RPG campaign has no single protagonist the characters played fit in by having a particular niche that is theirs.
It might be an age things but I don't really consider Fading Suns old school, it is not a new game but when I think old school I think traveler, FASA Star Trek, and Space Master for sci fi, but i don't think age of a game really matters much if it is easily found. Not sure if FS is or not on pdf since I have most of the books on dead tree.
For the record I do not think Fate would be better then Fading Suns to run a game with, there are some things I like about fate and it does high adventure well so I think it would be an acceptable substitute.
Do I consider Fading Suns a good game, yes I do. Not on any sort of absolute scale but compared to the others games I own or have read which is a considerable list though not exhaustive. If there is one out there folks think would be better for the planetary adventures that is what attracts me to Fading Suns I would be happy to hear about it.
For the people that would be against using the fading suns system what would the alternative be? the only FS MUSH I have been on(Star Crusade) used a home brew alternative that in my opinion failed to fix the faults of the base system while losing familiarity, the ability to reference published materials, and making advancement a pipe dream for the most part.
For me personally I could care less about market penetration, but there is a commonly voiced opinion that folks dislike learning systems that is where picking one people know comes in, which is why I brought it up, but I honestly do not think any well known system would run FS better. -
RE: Fading Suns
Are there better systems out there yes, without a doubt. Are there better ones for a Fading Suns game? The only one I would agree with that has had any kind market penetration is Fate because you can do planetary adventure well with it. Though fate has a ton of vocal detractors in these parts.
I am not a big fan of universal systems for the most part because I think mechanics should fit the genre, a superhero game should feel mechanically different from a cyberpunk from a High fantasy. I know not everyone agree with this, a lot of folks don't want to learn mechanics but instead want one system to rule them all.
Does Fading Suns by the books fell like planetary adventure, yes. Is it quick to run, yes at least I have found it so. I know I can run combat quicker in it then in WoD or 3.5. Those are pretty much my two biggest desires in systems, to fit the genre, and to be easy to run/use.
For example I like D+D 5th ed better then Fading Suns but it would suck as running a Fading Suns game without major modifications because it would not feel right. I could name a few more that statement holds true for. And I would be willing to hear ideas on systems to use that would work better. Star Crusade tried their own and it repeated most of the mistakes the the book one did. It took forever to raise a skill to competent level unless you started with it from c-gen, for example.
Almost every game favors specialists over generalists, I don't see this as a bug but a feature, after all these are things designed to be played in group, so specialization make sense because you have the rest of the party to have your back when it comes to the areas you are bad at. -
RE: Fading Suns
Oh the book is written poorly. I thought first edition was really written more clearly, the lifepath stuff was added in second.
As far as easier that depends on the person for experienced people the custom is easier for new people the life path is a bit easier and builds competent characters unless you try to make choices that don't go with each other, and well then you are likely doing it on purpose for story reasons. -
RE: Fading Suns
I disagree with that, it is one of my favorite systems to work with. quick to use in play, easy to explain, because it is the Price is Right System you want to roll as close to the goal without going over. That is super easy to explain to new people since everyone has seen Price is Right at least a few times.
For introducing non-gamers that is wonderful compared to say D20 which you start to get the eye glaze over effect pretty quickly on. The results fit the setting and themes of the game. True if you try to be a jack of all trades will will suck at them all, but that is why you have gaming groups each person fills a role.
It is far from a perfect system but I have never seen a perfect one and it works for the stories it is trying to tell is quick and easy to explain.
The biggest knock against it would be it is one not a lot of people know, but I don't think any of the well known systems would be lose the feel of the game.
