    • New release of old mud just for fun

      This is the original DikuMud updated for newer systems. The functionality is the
      same and maybe even the bugs. Hopefully I didn't introduce any new ones.

      This release was compiled and tested on the following platforms:

      • Windows 10
        Embarcadero C++ 7.30 for Win32
        Microsoft Visual C/C++ v19.13.26131.1 for x86 (Visual C++ 2017 Community)
        CYGWIN_NT-10.0 2.10.0 using gcc 7.3.0

      • Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
        gcc version 5.4.0

      • Linux Mint 18.3
        gcc version 5.4.0

      • OpenSuse 42.3
        gcc version 4.8.5

      For those of those who just want to play it, I've included a stand alone Windows executable.
      After unzipping it, just find and click on the diku.exe file to run it.
      You will have to allow it through the Windows firewall, and you may get a security warning
      message from Windows Defender depending on your settings.
      Then run your favorite mud client and connect to 'localhost port 4000'.
      The first player created will become the level 24 game Wizard.
      Players after that will be a playable normal character.

      Holy shit.

      Epic. I hope the GoT crew remakes 'Sparticus' except with dragons.

      @Chime

      I have a bunch of old MOO stuff here:
      ftp://ftp.sourcery.dyndns.org/archive/servers/tiny/moo/
      The oldest code I could ever find was the 1.6.1 version from August 1992.
      It has the RCS comments in it going back to 1990, but there is very little if any Tiny code in there or evidence of Stephen White's hand in it.

      This site has a lot more recent/semi-active links:

      Similarly unsure regarding the wiki. (Since most games have both, it's worth looking at what the standard mediawiki install does with the same info.)

      While Mediawiki (or other wikis) may produce their own logs, the web server hosting the wiki also produces logs and many installations are by default configured to log IPs forever.

      One of the biggest issues with older MU* Engines is their restrictive licensing.

      ... What?

      Seriously. What?

      Most older engines do not allow them to be used for the purpose of creating for-profit games. Evennia does not have that restriction.

      That's not at all accurate. This restriction appears to be limited to only DikuMuds and some LPmuds. It certainly never affected Aber, Mush, Muck, MOO, or the 50+ other mud servers released (many of them Dikumud clones).
      In fact, most of the older mud engines were created specifically for commercial use.

      Actually, it's the code which allows the server to connect to the internet that does.

      Think of it like this:

      @dig Kitchen=Kitchen;K,Out;O

      Under your version:

      dig

      $ Name of the room you're digging?
      ...

      This reminded of ColdCore which implements both.

         Syntax: @dig <place>
                 @dig <leaving way>[|<arriving way>] to <place>

         Syntax: @build

        To use this command simply go to the place you wish to extend, and type @build. It will prompt you for all of the information to build another place connected to your current location.

      Of course 'dig' without the sigil might be right out, because that could be an IC command used to dig holes, graves and what not. I don't think it's that big of a deal to provide multiple interfaces.

      A few years ago we set aside the first week of the month to play a board game rather than our usual role-playing games. Puerto Rico, Mare Nostrum, Settlers of Catan, Kingdom Builder, and Munchkin have been the most repeatedly played to date.

      You would be very surprised. In a thread on the specific topic of rape roleplay, some claimed they'd rather RP out rape than torture or death because to them they were more bothered about being killed than the sexual assault.

      You seem like a nice person, so I'll be gentle on you and keep the really bad words I want to use out of the equation. For now.

      Pats @WTFE on head. You seem like a gentle non-condescending soul.

      You're talking to someone whose hobby (RPGs) was on the receiving end of hate campaigns you had to see to believe. They hunted us out in the school basement in my high school. (Luckily the principal had a backbone and told them to fuck off so they were left with only harassing us with pamphlets.) They (in this case the Campus Crusade for Christ) followed us from room to room in university until we found a place they couldn't reach us (a private attached college's meeting room) trying to get our club shut down.

      Our Wargamming/D&D club met in the basement of St. Mary's Catholic church and the priest played with us. And yes, for some reason he always played a cleric. We'd all heard about the media frenzy over devil worship, but as far as I remember nobody's parents took it seriously.

      Given all of this, you'll have to excuse me if I'm a bit gunshy whenever I meet someone who self-identifies as a Christian. Especially of the evangelical camp. (The tormentors in high school were Adventists.) And if you think you're oppressed because of people like us being gunshy and suspicious, perhaps it's time for you to reflect on how you (the collective, not you individually) have been treating people for centuries. Perhaps, then, you'll feel a bit of sympathy instead of whining about your oppression.

      My German teacher in high school was a Russian orthodox nun who managed to escape the Soviet Union where over 250,000 priests and nuns were rounded up and murdered by atheists. Given the track record of atheists in the 20th century, well that ought to turn many a Christian white with fear.

      @egg I never have a problem finding RP

      1. I have a TTRPG group that plays once a week.
      2. I have Roll20 and FantasyGrounds.. There is always an interesting game looking for players.

      These are probably not the answers you're looking for, but there are very few Mushes that have settings that interest me personally.
