And we are open! Please check out the wiki for site info(hvmush.com). I am asking that people go to the wiki first so that, hopefully, people poke around there a bit to get a feel for what we're about. I'm Dark Souls on the game.

RE: NO-GO IPs for MU*
@Catsmeow The big problem I had with coding a Rifts c-gen was just that it was tedious. Every OCC or RCC needed something special about it. That's one of the reasons I was so excited for the Savage Worlds version of Rifts to come out, it's a much simpler system.

@Auspice Noted. I also agree. Thanks for the feedback.

RE: Heroes & Villains MUX
I've had some people ask about the state of the game so I thought I'd post about it here. It's going but it's going slowly. Most of the code is actually done I'm just working on the wiki now then I need to rebuild the grids(which probably won't actually take very long). The big issue is that I'm also working on another project with some people that's absorbed my time and some RL stuff has kicked off(in a good way, I'm starting to see some success in my professional writing so I've been doubling down on that). So, in short, the game is coming and I'm hoping by end of summer but no promises. I haven't given up though just got sidetracked by some other things.

RE: Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?
I love the idea of superheroes in an alternate setting. Unfortunately what I read is "Victorian Superheroes" but what I hear is Steampunk Superheroes. I'm a fan of the Victorian era but the internet has killed Steampunk for me. It just seems to come down to weird goggles and obnoxious contraptions. And it seems whenever I see the topic of a Victorian era game come up it invariably transforms into a steampunk game. That said I'd love to see a game set in some alternate era or world (fantasy, dark ages, zombie apocalypse, etc). I'd actually like to see this for WoD or something too. I'd love a good Dark Ages game.

RE: Legends of the Old Republic - In Progress Star Wars Game
My intention is to make the game as easy to slide into as possible. The Mandalorian Wars(and subsequent Jedi Civil War) is just a catalyst to get to the core of the theme; rebuilding. We're going to steal a lot from the Clone Wars(which The Old Republic does quite liberally anyway) to make the game more approachable to those who may not be familiar with anything Old Republic related. Imagine The Mandalorian with Jedi as another broken faction rebuilding and questioning what it means to be a Jedi.
You could probably watch the cinematic trailer for The Old Republic MMO and be right where you need to be. At least that's my hope.

RE: The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc
I haven't read this thread through in its entirety but this is my take on IC romance and TS. This is my personal philosophy, mind you. Romance and sex are just forms of RP just like anything else. I partake in them to enjoy the scene just like I would combat or an action scene or whatever. I think romance and sex can lead to all kinds of fun drama to RP out(just look at nearly any TV show or movie).
It's one of the reasons I never understood why MU's always had a "do but don't show" policy when it came to TS. The policies always generally read the same; We know you do it, it's fine that you do it, but NEVER IN PUBLIC and never post a log! I think that, so long as it's properly marked, and people want to share it what's the harm?
I run a game right now where people share their TS logs, and often let people in to watch as the scene unfolds, or whatever. We use Ares which gives us the benefit of tagging the scene labels and warnings, which certainly helps. As I said, people should certainly know what they're getting into but I think that's true of any scene.
Now I understand there are nuances to this subject but that's my take. It's just RP. I make sure anyone I RP with understands that this is my stance on it. RP is RP, IC is IC, and has no bearing on OOC friendships or relationships any more than our characters fighting a duel to the death.

Soft Opening: Blood Falls MUSH
So this is a game I've run privately for about a year now. We've had a lot of fun with it. We've lost some private players over the last few months and some folk thought I should see about recruiting others. So, I've decided to just try taking it public.
Blood Falls is a cooperative horror game set in the 1980s. The town of Cherry Falls is a fictional city situated in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. We run on Ares and use the FS3 RPG system. I intend for the game to largely be a sandbox where I empower players to run plots for their characters.
I'm calling this a soft opening because we may very likely fail here. Right now I'm the sole staffer and that's obviously not sustainable, even in a sandbox game. What I'm hoping will happen is that some folk will come over and be inspired to want to help out in some way. Be it just greeting new players, helping review apps(which shouldn't be too difficult), or helping run plots with or for other players.
Anyway, if anyone is interested we can be found at Blood Falls MUSH. Connection information, further theme info, and all that good stuff can be found there. I'm Transformers on the game.

RE: Observation
@reimesu My group had a blast with City of Mist. We used it to emulate a more straight-up superhero game. We did modify things a bit, used 3 themes instead of 4, and they were customized by the player instead of having strict themes. So a player could have "Alien Physiology" as a theme with related tags within it.
We're starting up some Savage Worlds stuff now. I'm running Rifts and another player is going to start up a Savage Worlds Pathfinder campaign. We're pretty psyched.

RE: Hello!Project's Mysterious Game Project Thread
That's a loaded question. In some ways Ares is meant to function in very specific ways(transparency, for instance, is key since there really isn't a way to obfuscate most things). You must use single word names and you're very strongly discouraged from re-using names as things linked to the old player will now be linked to the new player even if they're technically different characters.
In other ways Ares is very customizable. I've coded many different character generation systems for Ares with very little training in Ruby. The catch is integrating it with the web portal, which takes a lot more effort and work. Even something as simple as displaying a custom character sheet can be a daunting and, for me up to this moment, unachievable task. Nevermind integrating your +roll system into the web portal for usage in scenes. That's not to say that it can't be done but it may take more work than the average MUSH admin is willing to put in.
I hope that helps answer your question at least a little.
Edited to add...I still recommend Ares over any other MU server out there at the moment just for the web portal which is fantastic.

Brightburn looks like it could be interesting.

RE: Spitballing for a supers Mush
A DC Beyond game could mix the tropes together fairly well.

RE: Good TV
I honestly feel bad for some filmmakers having to balance pleasing the hardcore fanbase(the only reason the material is being converted into something more mainstream anyway) and turning that material into something palatable to as many people as possible. Even the Harry Potter movies, which I thought were amazing adaptations of the novel series, had a small subset of people who couldn't believe "this small thing" or "that random thing" was left out.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
I also think there are a lot of people who focus on the extreme minorities in these situations. I think most people fall into a moderate middle. I've never actually met someone who said "Director X ruined Star Wars. I've thrown all my Star Wars stuff away." I've spoken to people who have said, "I don't care for Director X's movies and I tend not to watch them" or something similar.
Also, let's be clear; Star Wars fans didn't drive anyone off of social media. A vocal minority raised a ruckus(including certain YouTube channels who thrive off of controversy and discontent). Again, I think most people fall into a moderate middle where they may have said "I don't get the character but that's not the actresses fault".
I think the novels are a great example of this on a larger scale. Some novels I've read and love. Others I have not(including the entire Young Jedi Knights series). The novels I did not care for did not impact my enjoyment of the other novels or my enjoyment of potential future novels by other authors. There are enough novels(and movies and comics) that the things I like and dislike just create a palette of things I watch or read. With the new trilogy, for instance, I don't care for TLJ but I'll probably watch TFA and ROS on a fairly regular basis.

So I went and saw RoS for the second time and I thought I'd post my thoughts on it.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
See, I took something different away from the original Candyman. First, I just took it as a horror movie. I try not to read too much into my cinema. That said, I think there were obvious parallels between the movie and the real world. Cabrini Green was a rundown ghetto where people had largely no hope. Candyman, to me, represented that oppressive atmosphere of hopelessness and decay. The everyday people in the film were used to it and him for the most part and had a much milder reaction to the thought of him being real and killing people than the main character. The main character, a middle class white woman, is thrust into a world that she existed on the fringes of but was never immersed in. Now she's immersed and experiencing the horror that these people experienced every day.
I didn't see it as a white woman menaced by a black man. I saw it as an economically privileged person(even if I wouldn't have used that terminology back then) experiencing the plight of the underprivileged people she'd been living next to her entire life and never really gave much of a thought about.
It was one of the few movies that made me think about socioeconomic inequality. Like District 9 it taught me something and was one of the best horror movies I'd ever seen. At least that's how I remember thinking about it. To be honest it's been a long time since I've seen the movie. With the new one coming up, however, I may have to change that.
