Awww. All these guys are too cute!

      Here's my brood...

This is Yoda. He just turned 6. He runs the house. Well he thinks he does. I have a cat that disagrees.

This is Aayla Secura. She's our little crackhead. I seriously cannot believe the amount of energy she has.

This is Jaina Solo. She's the newest member of the family. She's also the most stubborn and bullheaded. She's mastered the art of the "I'm sorry" face though.

This is Zoey. We rescued her from the pound a few years ago. She has a lot of health problems (she's deaf, mostly blind, and is losing control of her bodily functions) but we love her and hope to make her final years comfortable and happy. This picture was our attempt to get her to wear a doggie diaper. It did not go over well. She no longer wears a diaper.

This is Veronica Mars. She runs the house. Of that there is no question. She's a sweetheart but takes no crap from the dogs.

I also have another cat named Charlie but I can't find a pic of him at the moment. He adopted my wife and I about 15 years go. One very cold Thanksgiving evening he just sort of ran into the house. He's lived with us ever since.

My wife and I don't have actual kids so these guys fill that role for us. We love them to death. 🙂

    • RE: Best Superhero System for a Mush?

You'll get a lot of responses on this one I'm sure.

For me it's DC Heroes (the old Mayfair Games RPG). I think it scales amazingly well, has just enough crunch for those who want it but is easy enough to get into that anyone could pick it up pretty quickly.

I also really like Savage Worlds with the Super Powers Companion. I'd do a SW Hero game tomorrow if I thought people would buy into it.

    • RE: How can we incentivize IC failure?

@arkandel In instances like that, I think players just kind of need to suck it up. As you said, not everyone can be sheriff. I mean, it's okay to be bummed if you don't get exactly what you want but, as an adult and a theoretically creative individual, find a way to move on. Keep that momentum moving forward.

Build off the RP that led to them not becoming Sheriff, find a new plot to explore, and other ways to be involved. If the player really wants to be part of that style of RP, find a way to include them. Movies invoke tropes like this all the time.

"Yup, you're now the Sheriff but guess what? The first thing you have to deal with involves a situation that <Character that lost> has intimate knowledge about. You have to work with them to solve it." Buddy cop hijinks ensue.

For me, and I could certainly be wrong, I very much think it's all about keeping that momentum moving forward.

    • RE: Good or New Movies Review

I ignore Rotten Tomatoes entirely to be honest. A worthless site, in my opinion. For me I find looking at the average IMDB rating gives me more or less what I need to know. If 100,000 people consider the movie an 8.X then I assume there must be something worth watching there (assuming the movie is something I have an interest in to begin with).

Dairy Queen Builder 2 is the shit. I set my blizzards to cost $0.00 and removed the doors and windows from the establishment and it turned into a scene from The Crazies. Way more fun than murdering pool goers in The Sims.

An update, things are moving along. Just got sidelined with some IRL stuff and getting a 3D printer. Those are too fun. Anyway, I still need to get the feral stuff into the c-gen system and get the wiki setup. Just thought I'd drop an update to let people know the game is still in the works.

Add me to the list of people who watched Bright and really enjoyed it.

      [puts on conspiracy theory hat]
It kind of makes me wonder if it's just an anti-Netflix thing and/or if movie studios and/or theater chains are paying critics to tear it apart.

Either way I enjoyed it and I can certainly see watching it again.

@Ghost We are def using the cards. My group in High School didn't like using them so we used the alternate system they list in the book. For this weekend, however, I'm embracing the game as it was meant to be played. 🙂

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm now debating between a fictional city and a real one to set the game in. People are right, there are a number of advantages to using a real city. My wife got a kick out of basing it in Ohio as I've been wanting to move there for ages.

We probably won't have a high school, instead focusing on a college (possibly fictional even if it a non-fictional city, we'll see) for those who want that style of RP.

I'm not rushing into things. I'm gonna take a few days to look over my code, patch things I think need patching, and ponder the setting and theme.

Keep the ideas coming though, I do appreciate them.

For anyone who likes horror, westerns, or Jack Ketchum novels (it's not based on one of his novels but it plays out like one) I highly recommend the movie Bone Tomahawk. It's available for streaming over Amazon with their Prime service. The movie synopsis reads: When a group of cannibal savages kidnaps settlers from the small town of Bright Hope, an unlikely team of gunslingers, led by Sheriff Hunt, sets out to bring them home. It's got a pretty decent cast too with Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, and Matthew Fox in starring roles.

    • Marvel Mutiverse RPG

I know there are a few comic fans here, and Marvel just put out a new RPG, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on it.

To start, I was not a fan of the playtest material. I didn't think it felt like a superhero game at all. So I had given up hope on it. Last week, a friend told me I needed to check out the actual release because it was pretty different from the playtest material. So I ordered it from Amazon and was more than a little surprised. They seemed to have fixed most of my problems with it.

I won't bore people with a long-winded review of the system. Instead, I'll make bullet points of things I like and don't like. This is all based on reading the game and making a character. I have not been able to play it yet.

      Things I like...

      • It's a good-looking book. It's nice to have in my collection.
      • It's a decent mid-crunch game. I say mid-crunch only because they use multipliers to achieve some results. This might turn some people off and be clunky in play, but it seems simple enough at a glance.
      • It seems like it will play quickly.
      • It's very thematic. This is not a generic superhero RPG. It's the Marvel RPG. Powers are named after their most iconic incarnations, but it's easy enough to reskin/rename a power to fit your character. For example, your Shield Bash doesn't need to be a Shield Bash. It could be any close-quarters attack that could knock someone prone.
      • Character creation is very quick and simple. I think most people could make a character in 15 minutes or less.
      • Powers are straightforward with no fiddly bits. A power does a thing, and that's it. They're all rated equally, making power selection very easy. Some powers are tiered, having a 2, 3rd, or 4th rank, but each is treated like an individual power with the previous levels as prerequisites. I like it. It's a nice counterpoint to something like Hero or M&M.
      • It seems like it'd be very easy to make house rules for.
      • They give a ton of example characters. Something like 100.
      • And if you don't like how a character is built? I've heard a lot of people complaining because Daredevil is a Rank 2 character. Well, it's very easy to rebuild a character to suit your needs. Upping DD to Rank 4 would be very easy. To test the character generation system, I created my favorite fantasy build, a venomized Mary Jane. It worked very well, which brings me to my next point...
      • Characters you build are on the same level as their Marvel counterparts. One of my big gripes with some RPGs built off existing IPs is that your characters generally can't compare or compete with characters from the IP universe. Spider-Man is Rank 4 and built just like any other Rank 4 character. I love that.

      Things I don't like...

      • There's no PDF. You can get a physical copy or access it through Demiplane or Roll20. That was a huge bummer for me.
      • It's expensive. It's $60 retail(though Amazon has it for $35 right now) and $50 on Demiplane and Roll20 I think.
      • Some things are a bit vague or up to interpretation. For instance, Telekinetic Manipulation says a character can manipulate objects with their mind. That's it. No discussion of how big or heavy those objects can be. Fixed with a simple house rule, but it still seems like an oversight.
      • There is just no customization to powers. No mechanical method anyway. This can get a little clunky with some characters. Magneto, for instance, has a lot of powers that show how he can use his "element"(metal) to do things but has nothing that says he can lift a car. He could hit someone with a car, wrap people up in girders, and all kinds of other stuff but nothing that says he can lift a car or a mailbox or something. You assume he can, given the nature of his powers and all the things he can do. It's a bit clunky, and I can see it being an issue if you're playing with argumentative people.
      • There's no adventure. I'd have given up some sample characters for an introductory adventure.
      • It's very much a comic combat simulator. That's less of a gripe, given most RPGs are combat simulators, but the Storypath system has spoiled me, and I was hoping for more.
      • They list a few unique weapons in write-ups(such as Mjolnir) but don't give the rules on how to create those weapons.

And that's about it for now. Maybe the system will fall apart in actual play, but I think it has promise. It's a nice middle ground between games like Hero or M&M and the more narrative-focused rules-lite systems. I can see having a lot of fun with it.

Work progresses and I'm pretty happy with some of the mock-up layouts I've seen for the wiki. I'm currently working on inputting system information so everything everyone needs for the RPG is right there on the wiki.

@Ganymede I'll probably take you up on that offer but I wanna wait till the wiki is just about done before I move on to asking for more external help. Thanks! 🙂

@Devrex I love that. I think if I ever open a game again(and I probably will) I'm also going to include an "RP Hooks/Ideas" board where people can post things like that. Things for people to bite on and say, "Heck ya, let's go play that!"

It's ultimately just the difference between what I can do(a basic wiki) and what my friend was going to be able to do(a very pretty and themely wiki). I'm actually being very careful that it remains a project of love and that it does not become stressful. Which is why the progression has been so slow paced. That's one of the reasons we lost the wiki worker I think, it was becoming more stress than love so we both decided it would be best if we went another direction.
