To further clarify we have a +sheet that is powered by a very stripped down and slightly modified version of the DC Heroes RPG. There's a +dice system in place but, again, it's completely optional.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
For the record, Mutant Genesis MUX is the game I've been speaking about.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
I don't have anything to share right now but the game owner said she is working on something to hopefully share very soon. I'll post more once she says it's cool.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
Just a note that work on X-Men Utopia has paused (possibly stopped). The reason is I'm working with some fantastic folk on another X-Game that we're hoping to have live soon. It's not X-Men Utopia but I like it and, for now, it's taking up my time for coding and what not. I'll re-evaluate X-Men Utopia once that game opens. Just wanted to keep everyone updated!

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
If we could get everyone to write traits that succinct I'd be much less against trait apps. I've run games where I've been very explicit that BGs should be no more than 1 page length and I still got no end of ridiculous BGs. The issue is, that I've found, is that a lot of these appers have apps from ages ago that they just recycle.
To me the same can be said using FASERIP with this: Telekinesis RM
You can see that and a bunch of other traits with a simple +sheet command.
To be clear, I don't think either is wrong necessarily. Just different.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
I used a variant of FASERIP on a Masters of the Universe game that was modified just a bit. Karma was constant and could be spent during scenes as normal and just replenished in between scenes. We also largely did away with the chart options and just said you gain points for decent successes. A single point for yellow and two points for red. You could use those points for various things like increasing the effect attribute (so that someone with an AM Strength could actually hurt someone with an AM Invulnerability) or creating stunts for powers or what not. We felt it worked really well but there was just 5 of us.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
I remember the games that required thousands upon thousands of words on even the most simply powered characters. I always found it to be an exercise of self-indulgence (either on the staff side, look how elitist we are, or on the player's end, look how much I can write on my favorite character!) Either way I never once thought it helped keep bad players out of the game. I can, however, remember countless instances where RP scenes broke down into bickering about how a power or ability was worded (or was not worded). Essay style traits, in my opinion, do nothing but prolong character generation.
I like using RPG systems because they work. You can the same info from essay style traits at a glance, saving a ton of time both in character generation and in play. Marvel Heroic is about as basic as you can get (though I personally prefer FASERIP) and I think will work fairly well for what I'm looking for.
Of course mine is just one opinion.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
Ok, so it's now been going on 28 hours since I got up for work yesterday. This X-Men game got me excited, however, and I wanted to get some stuff up and running. So I've got the kernel of a game in place. For anyone interested feel free to connect to xmenutopiamux.com:2017.
I've put a notice in the OOC Lounge that reads as follows...
X-Men: Utopia is a game just beginning construction. We have a basic DB in place and a basic character generation. The following things are live on the game currently...
1: All basic MUX functions (we have some @chans, BBoard, +Jobs, Etc.)
2: Basic character generation. Enter c-gen for more.
3: +Sheet command. Type: +sheet (name)
4: A very basic +roll command. Type: +roll (die list)
Example: +roll 6 8 10 12
5: A sample character. Type: +sheet juggernautIf you encounter anything that doesn't work please contact ZombieGenesis and let him know! Thanks!
Everyone is invited to come and visit just keep in mind we are not a game right now, we're just getting on our feet. So if you just wanna come on and chat about the game or if you want to come on to help in some way you are more than welcome just remember; we're not a real game yet. But we hope to be some day.

RE: X-Men Utopia MUX
@jealousy My short answer would be "not much". I believe in ease of character generation and minimizing insane amounts of continuity. Important bullet points are all that would really be necessary and we can always link to Comicvine for a lot of stuff.

X-Men Utopia MUX
So take the first thread as a general discussion thread and this one as a more narrow, focused discussion on an actual game possibility. These are the ideas I've cobbled together from the other thread. Note these points are very summarized. Let's she how she feels...
Theme: A custom in-house x-continuity that blends Utopia and Necrosha. Someone gains unlimited power and resurrects all the dead mutants. They go to San Francisco to great a safe haven for mutants.
Timeline: Staff would create a timeline of events that make up the game history. May also list a number of events that have not happened. Anything not listed in one or the other can be discussed as needed.
Setting: San Francisco.
Available Characters: Every reasonably powered mutant who ever lived. Staff would create a +roster of available characters divided into tiers, players can have one alt per tier. Non-X characters exist in the world but are not appable and will only be seen in TPs and global events.
System: Marvel Heroic RPG would be used for basic +sheets that give people an "at a glance" view of a character. A +Dice system would exist but would be optional or used in instances when some things just can't be decided on.
Code Base: TinyMUX because that's what I know how to code.
Does this sound like a good jumping off point? I kinda dig it.
And again, these are all just very briefly summarized from things I grabbed from the other thread. Obviously nothing is set in stone, just looking to narrow the discussion a bit.

RE: X-Men Game
@scourge I would say "no" to Exiles types but I would not be opposed to the original 5. They're the reason I got back into reading X-Men to be honest.

RE: X-Men Game
@ghost I believe I can, yes. I'll work on that tonight and invite some people over to my test DB tomorrow or Tuesday to see how it goes.

RE: X-Men Game
A lot of good stuff in this thread so far! I'm loving it and kind of getting excited. Here are some of my thoughts...
1: I really like the idea of "all mutants being available" in a non Year 1 setting. I'll have to look into that storyline.
2: I'm a big fan of using a system. I could have a FASERIP or Marvel Heroic system up in a few days.
3: Alts will be tricky and may come down to a limit (2 or 3) and staff making judgment calls on if a player can take a specific character based on their other alt(s).Anyway, I'm heading home from work and will be playing The Division for a few hours but I'm anxious to check back later. Good talk everyone!
-
RE: X-Men Game
My problem with no alts is that you're probably killing a game before it even gets started. When I opened my DC game I put a hold on alts and I literally had people tell me they'd be back when I open up my alt policy, that they weren't investing time in just one character. Just my experience.

RE: Good TV
@three-eyed-crow said in Good TV:
@thenomain
The Good Place is probably my favorite thing on TV right now. Brings me joy every week. How is Season 2? I enjoyed Season 1 so much that I've been afraid to watch Season 2 in case it went downhill.

RE: X-Men Game
There's also the ability to use an RPG system (FASERIP?) and have sheets done by staff so players don't even have to deal with it. I'm all for making character claiming as easy and painless as possible. Let a player choose a character, write a desc, maybe something about their RP plans, and let them go is my take on it.

RE: X-Men Game
So the things I'm seeing seem to be the following...
1: Base it on the comics instead of the movies/tv shows (which is fine by me).
2: There is some debate on whether it should be X-only or more inclusive.
3: Should it just be the X-Men or also include other factions (The Brotherhood, the Hellfire Club, Etc.)
4: Continuity. Start fresh (Year 1/Ultimate) or pick a cutoff point or x-reality(Utopia, 90's X-Men, Age of Apocalypse)? For me I'd want it based on the comics for sure. I'd be fine keeping it X-only but if we could find a way to fit other types in I would not be opposed to it. I'd also like to at least keep the door open for other groups like The Brotherhood or the HFC. As for continuity...I don't know. I'm not all that up on X-stuff post 90's/early 2000's but I'm not sure most people would enjoy a Year 1 style game so...
Anyway, these are the threads I'm picking up on. Anything else?

X-Men Game
So I've been hearing whispers of an X-Men game that may or may not be getting off the ground. It's been ages since I've been on a good X-Game so now I'm curious about it. It seems that it's mostly in the planning stage and someone suggested creating a thread to discuss it so...here it is.
I'd be more than willing to jump on and help with an X-Game (hosting, coding, etc) if it seems like one is going to get off the ground. So what would you want to see in an X-Game or what was the X-Game I kept hearing about supposed to be about?

RE: FCs on Comic MUs
@tempest I actually took Empire Bay MUX down finally. I still have it and could bring it back but, for now, it is down.
I've heard rumors and been a part of some "in progress" games, few seem to be moving anywhere with any great speed. I've heard of an M&M game, an X-Men game of some sort, and I'm working with some people on a Multiverse style hero game. Whether or not any actually open I could not tell you.

RE: Good TV
@Jaded I was dubious when I started watching the third ep of Orville but I think they did an amazing job. A complex episode about a complex issue with a complex ending. With just the right amount of humor thrown in for good measure. The Orville gets better with each episode, IMO. As for the new StarTrek...I dunno. Gonna hold off judgment till I see a few more eps.
