@Collective While you're at it, one more piece of advice - although @Sunny already mentioned it among other things.

Only have rules you can enforce. Since you won't snoop, for instance, how would you know what happens behind closed doors? And if it's reported how can you tell who's telling the truth about what happened since logs are incredibly easy to forge?

@Collective My only comment is... you are preaching to the choir. This is too long.

The people you'll reach are those who'd already adhere to it. The rest won't read it because, well, it is too long. So it's likely to become more of an after-the-fact link to point someone to as you're chastising them ("we SAID don't cheat, look at rule #6!") than something that acts as a deterrent.

Except for the sex stuff, those may need to be explicitly said and players may legitimately not know they are or aren't supposed to do it.

I'm basically looking for a common sense policy that covers the important stuff like:

      Don't be an ooc jerk.
No, the staff isn't going to spy on your TS. (And dude, what was up with that thing with the duck?)
Don't cheat or break the mush, please.

And whatever other rules need to be there to encourage civilized behavior in our feral little tribe. Searching through said database sounds like a pain, so advice from those of you with experience would be a nice substitute.

Not to cheapen your effort here since you obviously mean well, but to borrow a page from Gany's book here - do you think having such rules is important, regardless of the exact wording?

What I mean is, if staff aren't assholes they are not going to do any of those things, and if they are then it doesn't really matter what the rules are since they can be unmade, ignored or obeyed only when it's convenient with little oversight by their players or usually even the ability to tell they've been violated at all.

I do still think it's nice to give your playerbase a taste of your intentions and mindset.

@Arkandel Belief is a weird thing. Just look at religion if you want to know how weird. Big men in the sky responsible for everything that happens, good or bad? Big men that want to judge and punish you for the failings that they themselves instilled into you? Big men that will still forever love you, no matter how much you disappoint them and scorn them? That's some... crazy weird shit right there.

I'd really like to avoid referencing religion in this thread although obviously I can't enforce that. It's bound to get some people upset either way, you know? 😞

But speaking of faith specifically, things like the placebo effect are real. I'm not claiming there's a supernatural element to that, we might have simply more control over what happens in our bodies than we're consciously aware of for instance, but it does seem to have an effect. Otherwise the 'will to live' wouldn't mean anything, you'd either succumb or die based on the extent of your condition alone without it being a factor, but doctors claim otherwise.

I... don't know about that part.

I always found Star Trek horribly campy, and I never watched a single episode from start to finish. I did like the new Star Trek movies, though, and the only reason is probably because they weren't very Star Trek.

What bugs me about the current Star Trek movies compared to former incarnation is that they're not as... cerebral. And I don't mean the series were always highly thoughtful or whatever - there were plenty of cringe-worthy moments, Kirk bagging green alien chicks and whatnot in there.

But when the good guys prevailed in the past it was typically because they out-thought their opposition. They did something clever, they found a loophole, exploited a vulnerability they arrived at through logical analysis or technology, there was something smart involved.

The new series favors acrobatics, superior fighting skills and pewpew'ing their way out of tough situations. While spectacular and on its own still enjoyable, that's not what Star Trek is about for me.

      As usual YMMV though.

I'd say yes if you weren't specifying "things that science hasn't yet explained' don't count. I think you are sort of setting this discussion up to be a lot of short "No" replies with that caveat.

Fair enough. How would you have answered without the caveat? Maybe I did set it up a certain way but I assure you, it was unintentional.

To answer my own question, I don't.

I think our mind plays tricks on us - for example it can recreate/reshape memories after the fact and since our perception is based on our recollections it can explain things like deja-vu or precognition. Sleep paralysis can explain the 'shadowy man' phenomenon many people have witnessed, etc.

I tend to doubt things which don't follow the scientific method of question, experimentation, observation, etc. Our minds are fucking with us too much to trust them.

    • Do you believe in paranormal things?

      Hey folks,

First of all please keep in mind this isn't the Hogpit so let's keep it civil even if we find something not to our exact tastes. 🙂

So I was reading a 'describe the creepiest thing that's ever happened to you' kinda Reddit thread on my commute this morning and I thought about MSBites... we've all spent years roleplaying characters involved in supernatural situations, going up against or playing angry spirits, mischievous undead, horny dickwolves or whatever strikes our fancy - but I'm curious. How many of us believe in the existence of paranormal things?

I will also add what I'm talking about now is actual, legitimate phenomena, not just things science hasn't gotten around to explaining just yet but which fit the overall directions of accepted natural laws. So think 'ghosts' or 'precognition' rather than 'the exact function of dreams'.

      Anyone?

@thebird I loved the first season, total binge watch for me. The second one... I think it lacked a payoff, but although it didn't measure up as well to the first (I found the individual plotlines disjointed) it was still fun.

I've watched four episodes in the third season and I don't know if I'll continue to the end. The characters are all split up, but also whatever it is that made me like it is just not there this time.

@Tempest Maybe look at it as a feature, not a bug. That is basically how things ought to be - when there's a scarcity of resources banding together is extremely effective. It also means you have to split the gains though; only one finger can be on Joe's rifle's trigger.

      @Cupcake Smurf, always.

I played fanatically for a while, not so much recently. But for me it was more of an excuse to go out and walk/cycle than a game, since after level 8 it really is an endless grind (you gain basically nothing for subsequent levels).

@Coin I'm not referring to sexuality here but any significant departures for the character. For example I wouldn't like playing on a MU* that's portraying regular DC continuity but the Batman player is killing criminals because that's the version he wants, or where he's married to Selina Kyle.
But see, both of those versions have existed at some point. I'm not sure why they're less acceptable.

      (Emphasis mine)

Because neither of those versions constitute 'regular DC continuity' which is what the premise for the game in my example was.

Otherwise if the MU* is supposed to reflect regular continuity then play the damn character as per that continuity.

No one is saying people can't make a game portraying anything they like. Just that if it's supposed to be based on a specific continuity then it should reflect that continuity's characters.

If it's not then of course people can play anything they want. Shang has any known variation of canon characters imaginable for instance and I see nothing wrong with that.

I'm under the impression the new Trek movie is going to not do that well... which means eventually they'll want to reboot the whole thing.
