    • RE: What's out there now and what has been attempted? A codebase discussion.

@tinuviel Silent films were once very familiar to their audience.

I'm also old enough to remember when cellphones came out ("what for? Just in case my car breaks down?"). Then when smartphones came out ("I prefer physical keyboards").

Technology changes what we like by giving us what we like more.

@faraday I don't mean to sound condescending, but I will anyway.

People don't know what they want until you show it to them.

We are what we are because of what we do, if you want to do it too then join in. Else, this might not be the group for you.

I know I'm not here because I romanticize being part of a dying hobby with a diminishing population.

I believe a platform - or the tools to make one - will emerge that can fuel the style of gameplay that no other medium can offer; real-time multi-player text-based role playing in a persistent world.

    • RE: Good TV

It's probably beating a dead horse but I truly don't understand the people behind Iron Fist.

I'm watching Daredevil S3 now. It's built on the same network, with what I imagine is a similar budget and know-how - yet six episodes into the season it's had several scenes in which the Murdock is far cooler than any in Rand's two full seasons.

For starters just his first fight with his seasonal nemesis alone was far superior; in all of Iron Fist it always seemed he never got to fight the Big Bad - it was always someone from his supporting cast. No one cared that much to do it either; none of his own villains (to the extent he had any!) were actually taking him seriously - in his own show! He was just, kind of, in the way.

But Daredevil's supporting cast actually compliments his story instead of competing with it. Foggy has a life, Karen is a strong character, Maggie is intruiging - yet it never felt disjointed. Even the stuff that doesn't work as much for me were choices I could understand.

Dammit, if they had only given one convincing scene like a prison escape or Rand fighting against several SWAT team members at the same time in close quarters. One. Not even a boss fight.

And if it's not going to be the same thing, why use any of the same conventions?

Telnet isn't a convention, it is a protocol. It comes with limitations - not only due to its age but also because what we're asking it to provide isn't part of what it was meant for.

What I'm looking for is the optimal platform to play text-based roleplaying games. Being unable to use enrich text or anything above the very simplest UIs isn't in any way making that any better.

As for attracting new players allow me a very simple question. Please answer it honestly. We all know newcomers can stick around despite a traditional MU*'s trappings; can you imagine many stick around because of them?

      a web-only MU engine

If it isn't telnet, is it MU*?

If I can roleplay in it, but better, I don't care what it is called.

I'm curious to learn what other projects are/where out there that tried to add to/improve on the MU experience, and how you feel they succeeded or failed. The only 'next generation' servers I know of that are currently doing pretty good are AresMUSH and Evennia. Are there others?

On the same host as MSB I had started building a web-only MU engine based on websocket, PHP over Apache and ajax components. The very basic parts worked well enough - multiple users, a rudimentary navigation for a grid with a back end to customize rooms, etc.

At some point I ran into a wall when I realized that the more time I spent coding the parts I really looked forward to - such as a hexagon grid-based GUI for PrPs - the less I had to do the stuff I just had to, and didn't really want to since it's boring and thankless; replacements for common systems like bboards or mail, CGen, etc.

I still think ridding ourselves from any backward compatibility with telnet is the way forward. I just can't commit to that kind of workload however.

    • RE: DnD Group

@jeshin It'd depend on the company. White Wolf for example never minded. WotC might.

Also what would trigger a company's lawbots can be different things. Too many mechanics verbatim in help files or the wiki? Automations in combat? Copyrighted characters having wild TS? I don't know.

I would love to run a DnD 5E MUSH. But the legality of it concerns me. I'm not sure these days what WotC is okay with.

@zombiegenesis Why the emphasis on Bloodlines?

I mean, is that your one pending item, does it just happen to be the one you are currently considering, or does the game thematically hinge on that factor in a way important enough to warrant the attention?

@saosmash said in Apology to Darinelle:

@tinuviel On the other hand, when you insult someone publicly, why should you get to apologize in private? I'm not super impressed by the public theater either but I don't have a better solution.

The obvious solution is to not repeatedly do a thing that is worthy of an apology.

If it's an one-time deal it probably doesn't warrant a public one.

If it's repeated then the apology itself ought to be the least of a person's concerns.

@2mspris "... that said, welcome to the game!"

Mine: Late 90's, a WoT MUD I staffed on was using a 'democratic system' to make decisions. That meant there wasn't really anyone in charge per se, anything was voted on by a committee, and the politics were pretty intense.

It had led to these long meetings - we're talking 4-5 hours each - to determine everything, which were spammy and boring as hell. Anyway, one of my RP partners at the time and I were TSing over pages while waiting for the next vote.

... And she maved, posing it into the room instead of sending it in a page to me. Did I mention her RL husband was the meeting's chairman?

There was a long silence afterwards, like 30 seconds of it while people read what was on their screens to make sure they saw it right... and then everything devolved into pure chaos.

      Yeah.
