Space Opera or Fantasy. "Oriental Adventures" would only really work for me if it was Exalted style.

@coin It does look like there is some overlap, like with the air thermokinetics and the water ice seeded. Both deal with changing the temperature of ambient particulates. Air and the water moisture in the air... which amounts to almost the same thing.
I don't really think overlap is a bad thing, personally. Also, you're looking at it from a physics point of view "raising and lowering temperatures" but this is magic--ice is ice.
I think it's important, when dealing with the classical elements (and thus magical elements) not to get bogged down over what it all means if you're talking about actual, real physics. Ice is ice. Cold is cold. Yes, ice is cold, but cold is not necessarily just ice. Some effects might overlap, some might be similar but with variations, etc.
Avatar, Exalted (Dragon-Blooded), Codex Alera, Legend of the 5 Rings, etc., they all have elemental stuff, we're probably pulling from all of it consciously and unconsciously.
Also, we're not making the elemental powers like Mage Arcana/Spheres (which was honestly my original intent) but rather limiting them to Techniques/Effects (like just Rotes, or Charms from Exalted). So if an effect makes sense for an element, it'll probably eventually get worked out.

RE: New Project (Savage Worlds?) Brainstorming
Maybe they could have, like, a weird psychic language. Maybe they have a very latent telepathy (those with actual Telepathy have to take the power) but they general communicate telepathically with each other and only use spoken language when dealing with "lesser" races. That would set them apart in my eyes a lot more than "bulging eyes". It would be interesting.

I don't know how to say "alien, fantasy cultures do not have to operate under the same psychological logic and behavior that human beings have, because they are alien and fantastical" any other way, so if this is a problem of you not wanting to follow that train of thought, then that's on your and your inability to suspend your disbelief.
Well, the caveat I would argue is that an alien or fantasy culture operates under the logic of its inhabitants and if those inhabitants operate under a logic that we recognize we can largely predict the outcome (e.g. if the inhabitants regard murder as being a bad thing it is a pretty good bet that there will be laws against murder). To make a culture operating under a completely alien system would require the population to operate under a fairly alien logic, which can make things very difficult to play.
Absolutely, but since it's not "all of one or all of the other" but rather a spectrum we can play with, that can be regulated.
With that said, I absolutely don't see things being set up as a 'rape factory'. Societies in which all inheritance is passed through the male line tends to do that because the 'men own everything'. That does not appear to be the case here, however. Everyone who is seeded gets an inheritance. Furthermore, while there is a general genetic advantage for males in archaic melee combat which results in a cultural belief that 'men are the fighters' the nature of the Seeded upends that and creates a system whereby, I assume, the 'strongest warriors' are pretty evenly split between male and female. It is even possible women might hold a slight edge for some reason which could then offset the fact that in the general (non-player) population of Unseeded men would have a slight advantage in force of arms (I am not proposing modifiers to CG to give advantages to one sex or another as PCs do not typify the general population).
As a result it is completely possible for the society to be based largely around a lot of medieval European concepts (in the same way that something like GoT is) while not being a male dominated patriarchy.
Exactly.
And if Exalted has shown us nothing else, it's that just because something is passed down genetically in a fantasy world it doesn't mean the world has to be dominated by men.

I would say the people that have the issues are the people who come to online gaming to reproduce something that the medium can't provide, actually.
On what do you base the statement that the medium can't provide that experience? Because I've seen games where it absolutely does. It's not a limitation of the medium, it's a (potential) limitation of individual game choices.
The medium as in "multiplayer online gaming" at the scope we function at.
You may have had good experiences with a BSG game, but as a whole, I just don't see that, haven't seen it, and especially haven't seen it last.

@arkandel said in Earning stuff:
It's how we are brought up - there are simply very few paradigms outside of MUSHing in our pop or gaming culture that prepare a player for not being one of the main protagonists of their own setting.
Those expectations can even be found in multi-player video games. In MMOs the quests (once you get past the "slaughter 20 bunnies and bring me their hides" stage) are designed with your character as the protagonist, even when there are umpteen million other characters on the server.
@arkandel said in Earning stuff:
From a certain point of view our expectations are unreasonable. It's not natural for players to change the way they think literally everywhere else other than in MU*.
There are, of course, teamwork-based games (e.g. Pandemic) and teamwork-based situations in games (e.g. a 20-man raid in a MMO) where it's not about stealing the spotlight. But those require the team coming into it with a set of shared expectations, and more of a community mentality. We just don't have that in MUSHland.
True, but in MMOs they've also completely gotten rid of the "special factor". Your level 60 Archmage with the Wand of Watoomb's Mom isn't the only level 60 Archmage with the Wand of Watoomb's Mom, to the point where you start to wonder how many wands Watoomb's Mom had, or at least how many moms Watoomb had.
It doesn't matter, in am MMO, if you fought the aliens off--because someone else fought them off, in fact, fifty thousand other people fought them off. It's a complete abstraction of story.

Here's the thing....
(and I doubt I'm alone in this)
Even pre-PBs, I didn't read descs.
So many people wrote meandering, confusing descs that left me
The best I could glean would be, for example: 'ok, female and.......... red? hair?'
So I like PBs. I like PBs because they're a better descriptor of what your character looks like than your words are. Most of you can't write what a person looks like for shit with your 'lithe lean voluptuous curves' and 'limpid verdant pools'

. I've also been long tempted by a Kaiju World MU filled with giant monsters.
I would so love a Kaiju game, one thought I had for one would each player have both a human scale character and a Kaiju scaled one, you could would be able to get to play on both sides of the giant monster smashing stuff equation.
Could just make an action game based on Pacific Rim by way of Colossal.

RE: Twinking in RP MU*
@Arkandel, what?
I was referring entirely to the point at which you find yourself in an IC group with friends who are either busy or idle. For example, I recently made a werewolf pack about six months or so ago on The Reach. But after playing for maybe a month (at the most) regularly, the following happened:
- One player went on their honeymoon, leaving the game for an extended period;
- Another has health issues that make it very hard for them to be consistently around;
- Another two got touched by drama in another sphere and lost their desire to RP for a while;
- Another never finished their character at all;
- Two others felt like nothing was happening, so they hardly log on;
- Another stopped logging on and idled out;
- I myself ended up trying to find others to RP with, which is hard when your central theme is Pack play.
It doesn't help when people really want to participate but aren't willing to be pro-active, requiring others to constantly motivate them, which is what I run into over and over and over and over.

RE: Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?
Meanwhile, another approach to disparity that I have considered is making XP player-based and not character-based. You can have plenty of different alts, but you only have one experience pool to draw from. You can have one very powerful alt, or you can have an assortment of increasingly less powerful alts. Choice is yours. Sure, thsi completely abstracts experience (so for example, a player can get experience for a plot Alt A was a part of and spend it on Alt B) but that's not really that big an issue in my mind, honestly.

RE: Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?
@saosmash said in Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?:
@three-eyed-crow I was thinking more along the lines of, "This character has a POC PB and is described unambiguously as a POC, but I'm gonna use Jared Leto."
People are ultimately gonna do what they're gonna do, with rosters. Sometimes, you're going to be frustrated. It is the Way of Things.
"Staff does not object to the change of a Rostered character's PB, as long as it follows the basic guidelines of appearance, especially when it comes to race/skin tone."
And, I mean, yeah. If I'm stasff and someone described as a POC suddenly gets a player who wants to make their PB Chris Pratt, I'm gonna go ahead and say "nah".
