I care about the hobby and enjoy it just fine. You people freaking out about 'zomg so and so said mean things about me!' is what I am mocking. You're all being ridiculous.

No one is freaking out. People are discussing apologies and the impetus thereof. No, it isn't about you. I know that can be disappointing.

In my opinion and experience a good player can make just about any character type highly appealing.

@surreality for the record: it's cool, I don't care, water under the bridge. I just wish you were able to wait out your initial vicious responses to things and keep it slightly more chill. For your own good!

Trust me, I never say the first thing that comes to mind at people. I have a vicious mean streak inside me and I have to work to keep it under control.

Personally I did not attempt to glean the identity of the defamer from context clues. Ultimately, I know that people are going to talk shit about me because I am a person who exists on the internet in communities with other people.

I was... surprised and confused by what Surr told me, which did not include the identity of said defamer, and I didn't ask. If the source of the garbage was in fact Auspice, that's disappointing and sad, and yet I remain without outrage.

Frankly the accusation in question was so ludicrous as to defy outrage, too absurd to defend.

      Just like... really? Really, really?

      Grow up.

ok but it's all true, though. It was my plan all along. It's the whole reason I championed the idea of letting same sex relationships (and marriages, at times) be socially acceptable in a fantasy 'L&L' game.

The complaints rolled in and i said NOPE GET OVER IT my special angel babies that I have never spoken to before can do. what. they. want.

(just to be clear, for the peanut gallery, this is 100% sarcasm. Exactly 0 complaints about the situation ever rolled in, because there was not a situation)

I also appreciate the apology and the context that it provides. I'm still a little confused about where the bullshit in question came from but I guess haters gonna hate?

in any communication issue, I am being misunderstood and it is totally explainable. You are absolutely doing it on purpose to ruin something for me.

      ...

it was my take on why these sorts of things happen, man, not a serious statement. Obviously this is no big deal to me, i was kidding about being mad.

@mietze A staffer away from the game for a week should not be a huge deal. My favorite thing I've ever seen said in a game is "but what if it's an emergency"

It makes me giggle and giggle.

      An emergency. A roleplay emergency.

    • RE: Historical settings

With actors, there is still very much a step of removal. Actors follow scripts, which are works of fiction written by someone else. Actors do not get onstage and play out characters that they invented, that only they play, where they write lines on the spot.

You,re right, the closest equivalent to RP is improv...if improv where mostly players are very invested in playing out something that appeals to them, removed from the character. Not many mush players (in my experience) have a lot of acting experience. I do! Others do! But not all, not by a long shot.

objectively, 100% - discrimination is bad. If you are taking part in it, you are doing a bad thing and deserve the corrective heat that comes your way for it.

But this is fiction we're talking about. Do you really think that whoever wrote Schindler's List is a terrible human being because they had some historically-appropriate bad guys in it doing bad things?

Not even remotely. But I think straight up comparing a work of fiction to interactive fiction where there are multiple people taking part and playing single characters and investing emotion into those singular arcs is a false equivalence.

It is absolutely not the same thing.

    • RE: Historical settings

@surreality I'm referring to the one doing the discrimination. It doesn't necessarily translate character to player, but objectively, 100% - discrimination is bad. If you are taking part in it, you are doing a bad thing and deserve the corrective heat that comes your way for it. I think in a modern game, a character exhibiting that behavior is likely to have a very bad time.

in a 'historical' setting, a character exhibiting that behavior might also have a bad time because people are generally decent and generally know better, but that player is more likely to complain about the bad time being unthematic. Imagine being a staffer having to tell people "now now, don't be mad at this character who says black people are mentally inferior by nature. That's the game!"

      like. yikes.

    • RE: Historical settings

The biggest difference being, imo, playing the 'sometimes' discrimination inherent in a more real world modern theme will very clearly single out a character (and maybe a player) as a giant target because of crappy behavior

In a historical setting, you'll see pushback on that because 'bu bu it's the norm'. It's just sticky. Best avoided.

@faraday I mean there many ways. There's speculative fiction, historical fantasy, alt history...I am just not sure any of them are a GREAT idea when you are introducing a wide swath of rando players.
