    • Kay's Playlist: Crucible City (first one),TR & HM & Darkwater etc

Hi there! I'm looking to get back into MU*ing and would love to re-connect with people. I was She-Hulk the building staffer at Crucible City (Mutants & Masterminds game), the first one that was set in Chicago, and mainly played Samantha Covenant the supernatural P.I.

On The Reach I played Pepper the terrifyingly happy Cheiron Hunter, and Q the Mortal.

On Haunted Memories I played Bela the Mortal, Lucrecia the Mage & Tea the Changeling.

On Darkwater I played Ida the insect Fairest, Eve the broken city Mannikin and a handful of others. On Darkwater the Return of the son of Darkwater I also played Ida.

On San Francisco MUX I played Ida the Insect Fairest again.

On City of Shadows I played Heloise the Fungal Changeling, Celandine the tiny fury of the three witchy Gale sisters, and almost created a werewolf named Perish.

There’s tons of people that I adored playing with and would love to get back in touch with.

New current (July of 2023): Trying out Wyrdhold! Briar is my work in progress bit there.

    • In development: pure OC superhero game

So at six pages and counting, I've run out of space for all the ETAs on this thing. I'm also thinking this is gone from interest check to 'I think I'm actually developing this thing'. So, here's the current status:

It's going to be modern day or near future. Big metropolis in a fictional new offshoot off of the Washington state coast, a made up county that stretches out into the Pacific in a wing-shape. In it is the big city that is the main setting for the game. There's also going to be a new fictional mountain range and stuff because Pacific Northwest, but I'll figure out those details later.

The city will have neighborhoods, but not with any hard limit as to who can play what where - more simply realistic, like how any big city's downtown will have a different feel from the harbor area, etc. It will have a grid with rooms etc, though I haven't yet decided on the actual layout I want. I think that's still for later.

There's going to be a few permanent pocket dimensions as well, one of which goes into a noir-ish 1940s little alternative reality of the big city. The city (maybe the world? undecided) also has temporary pocket dimensions/gateways open up now and then, causing havoc and mayhem or miraculous goodness or just weirdness.

Outside of that small piece of the planet, Earth itself is the equivalent of Australia as far as other aliens are concerned. Massive cred to @Flitcraft for this idea. It's a place used as a dumping ground by various stellar polities. They drop criminals and wannabe Napoleons and various undesirables here, with the understanding that the few that aren't killed by the native species (i.e, humans) still won't be able to get off the backwater piece of rock. I am debating if there might or might not still be the equivalent of local 'space cops' touring the area on a regular basis to make sure there's no equivalent of life boats gunning for Saturn or such.

I am going to take the time today and tomorrow and really dig into ICONS. I'm currently looking between it ( this ICONS to be specific since there's multiples: https://greenroninstore.com/products/icons-superpowered-roleplaying-the-assembled-edition ) and good ol' M&M3E.

As far as character concepts go, power origins etc will be up to the players, but I will offer some pre-made options that should also help foster RP hooks. There's an evil corporation out there that likes to try and create mutants for them to control, super villains to like to create robots/summon elsedimensional or mystical beings etc, an unknown genetic strain that sometimes becomes dominant and changes the human into an Advanced Human, the destined wielder of the Force of Blah, etc, etc. Probably somewhere along the lines of five to seven or so more common sources.

@carex assuming I didn't just leave the game, I would never ever ever tell staff about anything. If there is a problem, as a player I would expect and want staff to help fix it. I would not want every other player on the game to be involved and for them to decide how it should be solved.

Heard it perfectly in tune with the song.

I blame you and all the upvoters for encouraging this. And a one, two, three...

🎡 Too hot for plot, make your connection drop
They use their writing skills to get whatever they don't got
Other characters drool like fools, even the ones not human
The TS is a hit because the immersion is all-consuming
      Fame, +jobs, bbposts, crazy xp
      They never desced anyone unassuming
They scene with group leaders, discriminating readers
Coders, staffers, everybody's doing it or done it,
Or at least used to do it, you know you know who's into it
And believe me, you, it's as good as true
When the chips fall down almost everyone likes to ---
But sometimes even when they have it all in the bag and should be glad
They will be mad and sad and feelin' bad
Thinkin' about the RP they never had
No long term plots, just TS, followed next with a page and a vote
That that last scene was so hottt, quote unquote
Let's talk about TS, baby, (sing it)
let's talk about pose and scene, (sing it, sing it)
let's talk about all the drama
and the mayhem that may be 🎡

Unagi don/unadon/unagi donburi. That is to say, a bowl of steaming hot rice topped with eel grilled in teriyaki style, with the salty sweet sauce turned into a caramelized glaze from exposure to flame. My local place adds thin marinated strips of seaweed and a generous scoop of masago. It's become my favorite comfort food, especially when the weather's cold.

@ixokai Good point re: the isms of the time. Those can be explosive topics and difficult to handle sensibly in a MU* environment.

@Three-Eyed-Crow I am in no way shape or form looking for those kinds of numbers, yipes. That would probably have me overwhelmed right now, honestly. My ideal would be around 20s, especially when it's around the clock so your RL timezone/sleep schedule doesn't matter, you can always find RP. That seems to be the tricky part.

@WildBaboons @faraday 1930s I think of the tv show Carnevale, the Dust Bowl, loads of poverty, war on the horizon. It's a bleaker, grimmer setting, that's for sure. But also radio, airplanes, swing music, the Golden Age of Hollywood, Art Deco, hard boiled crime fiction... It's the depressed middle child forgotten between the louder 20s and 40s.

Don't label it as something that it doesn't actually contain. You'll get initial interest - and then an enormous drop off and probably way more drama than you want when people see that the inside doesn't match the cover. Go all original.

RL Peeve: being so drained of energy from work going into crunch time that I have nothing to MU* with. I can't even bother to play computer games ffs. I come home and listen to music and read books and then I sleep.

@TNP @Three-Eyed-Crow @Cobaltasaurus - So after input and discussion with both friends and relative strangers, I think I'm going to go for what I think is a pretty good compromise. Modern or slightly in the future. Metropolitan focus. But some kind of split grid approach where different parts of the grid are more friendly to different flavors. So one part would have that noir/mystery vibe, one part would be more shiny high tech, one part would be more for silly gadzooks hijinks, etc, without splitting things up so far that people can't interact and find RP. Maybe one big city with different neighborhoods? I'm still thinking about that one. Probably start out with just the basic city with those extra flavors just hinted at/mentioned, then actually expand as the game grows.

Game system wise, M&M3E has come up pretty strongly. I also realized I do have the GM's guide and player's hand book for the latest 3rd Ed, so am going to peruse that to see what I think. That said it's still up in the air, and I would love more input and thoughts on people's preferred systems for this stuff. I'm familiar with M&M from Crucible City, but I know it's not easy to get into for new people. I updated my original post with this too, hoping for more input from all interested parties. πŸ˜ƒ

    • RE: Heroic Sacrifice

@kestrel You make some really great points.

I think, thinking about it some more, that part of the issue might be that really creating a story together does usually require a sense of trust between the players. I'm a bit too tired at the time of writing this to really feel I can explain that coherently, but I'll give it a shot. Notice that your example of characters that died for the sake of the story all feature characters that were part of small groups, that worked together intimately and at length.

In a MU* setting, that would be a small group of players whose characters were part of the same motley/pack/family/company/etc, so there's the IC bonding and knowledge of each other but also the OOC bonding and knowledge. With that scenario you would also (assuming everyone becomes friends out of character) have a lot more sense of making a story together. You're more willing to sacrifice, because there's the direct sense that you are doing it for that story you are making together, and that you are also doing it for the well being of the group.

I think that might be a key. Encourage IC and OOC bonding to encourage the willingness to win-by-losing, that feeling that you're working together.

    • City of Shadows MUX

I'd been asked to do a review of this place a while ago, and as I've finally hit the grid and had RP I think I'm ready.

For some context, this is the first MU* I've played on for oh, at least two years now.

So far, it's been an absolute delight. The staff are some of the most easy going I remember encountering, I have no anxiety about sending in requests. They're very encouraging. Both they and the players I've talked with have been friendly and laid back, and the RP quality from both the scene I was in as well as the logs I've read range from ok to good to excellent.

I'm well aware that there's always a honeymoon period, and maybe this is actually all a front to sell damned NFTs or something, but I'm really thrilled right now and really highly recommend it. As in I'm having friends already joining me on the game recommend it.

The only negatives I've found is that on occasion there's been game information missing or hard to find, but it's just been a matter of asking on the channels and staff has then either fixed it or provided it or both.

    • RE: Big city grids - likes and dislikes

What do you guys think about grid descs that are non-static?

I.e changes depending on the time of day and/or season and/or weather, assuming that is part of the game code?

Or has the occasional automatic @emit like 'A cold breeze whispers through the alleyway.' or 'Something splashes in the water amidst the reeds.' or the like.
