@faraday said in World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings:

What I was responding to was @Derp's assertion that in general people would be pissed if you turned up to a game without knowing the system.

Notice, however, two things about my original assertion:

      1. There is a difference between theme and game system/mechanics. People don't get pissed as much about theme as they do mechanics.

      2. This only tends to fly on WoD or games with an original RPG system in place.

Games using established systems are where this comes into play, and theme / source fiction material is different than mechanics.

      Bullshit.

I get tons of pissed more about theme and setting than game mechanics. Game mechanics I can usually help with pretty damned fast, especially if it's a system I am super familiar with. Not a problem, I will help someone learn what they can do.

People who don't learn the setting or theme?

They break the immersion of the game for me and literally /kill/ my desire to play on a game.

@ashen-shugar That is kinda of an interesting idea, call it a Quarantine reality level, when you need to jail someone, throw em in that reality level. Set up your commands to check if reality levels match before cycling through.

A lot of people know a lot of systems, the idea that WoD is the only system people know is one that is perpetuated by this board, a lot, because it is a WoD echo chamber for the most part.

You know what would work great for pulp adventure?

      FS3.
      Fate.
      d20 Modern OGL.
Hero System (Just make chargen an automated walkthrough process where they can't try and build 'powers' using raw points, would work well, then get rid of Speed as an attribute, problem solved).
      Savage Worlds.
5th edition SR (Cut out magic except for ritual or big bads, and cybernetics of course, as a system sr5 is actually pretty solid)

There's also a lot of games out there that /don't/ use WoD that are doing fine, we just don't hear about them much here.

@jennkryst The difference being that faux-science that may or may not be feasible because we haven't proven it yet (coherent light swords wrapped in magnetic containment fields) vs Physics We Know ( Objects in motion stay in motion without outside forces, and other such generic physics).

And simple Auto-Pilot... /we/ have auto pilot for planes, boats, etc, I would think if you could invent space travel and hyperdrive, you could invent an autopilot.

@kanye-qwest Laser sticks are not arbitrarily terminating, they are actually bound by a cohesive magnetic field which is why they actually /clash/ and have impacts against each other. To an extent.

@ganymede I love Earthdawn, I do not know how you would turn it into werewolf space marines...

Maybe if you had different forms give step adjustments, and power armor providing other step adjustments...

      Ok it could work.

@surreality I hate (not really) to say that the CW format works for me, I loved the Vampire Diaries for like the first 5 seasons, I haven't caught up but... those hips of hers... mmph.

@thenomain I feel your pain, but, there is no delivery service in the world that can handle 1 day shipping during this particular holiday in the united states.

      That's why Santa Claus...

That's exactly it, you have to go into a movie looking at it by itself, not trying to compare it to the books. A book is an entirely different media, much of it filled with your imagination, there are huge gaps and differences in style and flavor. I can enjoy a book for what it is, and a movie for what it is. They are two different things entirely.

I'd like to learn Python and Ruby, so I could take a look at Evennia and Ares, I am wanting to do something with a bit more automated combat wise and my own system but I really, really, /REALLY/ don't want to use MUCK or MOO.
