@sparks Sounds like something that would be useful for a hard combat sim game where mass combat, digging of trenches, and weather effects had a major impact on the situation and resolution.

My favorite period face is probably Christina Ricci.

@sunny I know it's possible to do with Penn too so I imagine it wouldn't be impossible with other code bases

RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?
@arkandel @apos I personally run into situations where people are making light of heroin addiction, when I have known people who have had it ruin their lives and/or kill them.
It's just one of those things where I know I am ultra sensitive about it. I can understand others being ultra sensitive about other things that have happened, either isms, or obia's, or whatever /but/ that doesn't mean the onus is on the game to do something about that. It's on me/others to know when we need to step back.
If I knew a place served only beer and I hate beer (totally hate beer, side rant), I wouldn't go there to partake of what they offered, especially if I knew it was beer in the first place, and then demand that they serve mixed drinks instead of beer.

RE: How do you construct your characters?
It depends for me, sometimes I want to play a specific concept, sometimes I just build the sheet and then decide what personality and history an individual would have to /get/ that sheet. Sometimes I find a picture or other source of inspiration and run with it.
The only character I am currently playing is probably the least effective character I've ever made.... for now... but eventually.... oh yes.

RE: Code systems that make it easier to get on with the business of roleplaying
I personally love automated chargens, automation that can get people playing and empower them to spend resources (Money or xp) within the game system is imho, key to just getting the game on.
Every time Staff /must/ get involved, it's slowing things down and a barrier for RP.
So I have been on a kick lately of coding chargens that don't need staff at all, the options allow only for legal characters to be made. It frees up staff for things like... running plot, theme and setting support, etc.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
Comments like @Jennkryst are why we can't have nice things in MU's, real world peeve, people who /know/ what they are doing is fucked up, insulting, and otherwise being a douche, and do it anyways.

RE: What to do when your mush is attacked
@thenomain Which is ideally why you never use anything but a throw-away e-mail address for it. Cuz the bad actors will do horrible things with that e-mail address...

RE: General Video Game Thread
There comes a point where you're not going to get a lot of actual box sales with a title like Overwatch and it'll need to go F2P with loot boxes being the primary money maker. I'm sure loot boxes already /are/ the primary money maker but...
I pre-ordered overwatch and it is a fun game. I don't play it all that often anymore cuz... can't voice chat without rabid hate, and playing an fps without voice chat is just frustrating in the entirety.

I was attracted to it by... well, let's be honest. The concept is a bit on the absurd side, which really appealed to me. The idea of someone just barely over three feet tall being a serious ass kicker also had its charm. And she has proven to be rather viable as a fighter, when my dice decide not to hate me, which is a very nice surprise.
It is a bit absurd but, no why are dwarves the only short race that gets to kick ass? One of my favorite things about Dark Sun is the Halflings scared the shit out of everyone. Why? Because they were cannibals. Tiny. Dangerous. Adorable. Cannibals.
Though... what's more absurd, a halfling barbarian... or the idea that halflings, elves, dwarves, etc, exist at all. It's fantasy. Be fantastic.

RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?
Re: When is to much to much...
There are always people who are going to try and break setting and theme to be the special snowflake. On some games it gets to the point that the special snowflakes outnumber the original setting and theme intent and it can take over a game.
I've seen this happen on a number of games, and the only real way to combat it is at chargen. It's why backgrounds are important or at least a series of questions about the characters motivations, personality, and activities.
Staff need to proactively run stuff that enforces and uses the theme and setting, not just monster of the week plots. This will hammer the setting home as well as make people have fun playing in that setting and theme rather than forced to use their own imagination.
Nearly every single game system is designed around /someone/ being the story teller, the game master, the dungeon master, there's always a head honcho running the show. There's only so much we can expect our players to do before the train comes off the rails. Once that happens, once all there is is bar RP and TS, theme and setting go out the window.
As for how to deal with something being uncomfortable to you, politely ask if the scene focus could shift as you're uncomfortable OOC, if they refuse, then log what you've got, move away from what is so badly interrupting your pretendy fun times to something more enjoyable. Alert staff if the interaction was a policy violation.
I personally dislike Retcons on general principle, but sometimes they are absolutely necessary to put out a dumpster fire.

@collective said in How should IC discrimination be handled?:
@lithium Nowhere did I say I was attempting to enforce anything. Anywhere.
You imply it a great deal, and imply it's wrongfun to allow discrimination at the IC level.
I am not going to touch OOC discrimination because that is off topic.
I am sticking to my guns, because:
@collective said in How should IC discrimination be handled?:
Am I correct in understanding that you basically believe that if minority or queer people don't want to deal with abuse, they shouldn't play any game they don't run?
I am tired of the fucking innuendo and twisting of words you are doing.
-
RE: RL things I love
@apu Props for playing a halfling barbarian, it's one of my favorite combinations and the only way I halfling when I do halfling.
-
RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?
@collective No. As a minority and a 'queer' as you like to use that term, I am saying that it is impossible to please everyone and nobody should even try. It is doomed to failure.
Find a game that you enjoy and play that rather than try to enforce the same sensibilities onto every setting, every theme, and every game out there.
-
RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?
@collective Here's the thing, anyone has the ability to opt out on most any game by simple FTB or leaving a scene if it's not to their taste.
All else fails, there's the whole ability to type 'QUIT' and log out. Nothing can really stop anyone from doing that.
If the setting and theme are of a type where such -ism's and -obias are appropriate, and such things really bother an individual player then that game is probably not the game for them.
This is an entirely optional hobby, with entirely optional worlds, with entirely arbitrary settings decided by the game runners and creators.
There is no way to please everyone, all we can do as a game runner is present the game we want to run and enforce the decisions we have made.
To try and turn the whole idea into some sort of 'blanket' ruling is nonsensical because some settings and themes have certain aspects built in.
So the answer to me seems pretty simple:
Is the IC discrimination part of the setting and theme of the game? If so, then ICA=ICC.
If it's not, then Staff may need to step in and enforce the tone of their theme and setting.
It is impossible to please everyone, and it's all pretendy funtimes but that's the thing... not everyone finds the same things fun.

@kitteh said in How should IC discrimination be handled?:
@deadculture I don't remember the details of the character trying it. Some noble. But it was right in the main, public area of the Temple. She was sitting in the pews praying, he sat next to her, and a pose or two later had a hand under her dress trying to... well, I'll leave it there, before I went scrambling.
sigh
I'm pretty sure the noble privilege shit started during the Taleo era. Of course, trust Gold Dragon nobles to take it to fucking eleven.
As a person who PLAYED a gold dragon noble, I don't like being painted with broad strokes of a brush like that. Not every Gold Dragon noble was a skeezy fucker. In fact, it was kind of weird when I took the character how fast people /wanted/ me to take noble privilege with them and I was like... no. Am kinda glad my character ended up dying in war, never went back.
Heck it was Firan, maybe my denying people their rape RP was what got me killed.

RE: RL Anger
My new boss is one of those guys who micro-manages everything.. with the express purpose of making it so he has to come into work less than 20 hours while we're all working overtime because he won't staff us up enough.
I don't mind the overtime, but seriously, quit changing my schedule two days before making me start 1 hour earlier or end 1 hour later...
