RE: Constructing a FAQ (and what ground to cover)
@misadventure said in Constructing a FAQ (and what ground to cover):
I like FAQs to have sections that address am area of questions, either in a linear list or as a tag in a wiki.
How do I connect to this game? (telnet, commonly used applications, less common applications)
What are advanced client features commonly used for? (Spawns, formatting, triggers etc)
Opening topics on roleplay online (posing, what is RP, ways that stories start in terms of player and staff creation and control, there is no winning)
Routine topics of roleplay (how to form groups, how the game system basics work, code used by players such as xp spends or requesting plot elements, PVE and PVP play styles)
Complex topics (cheating, complaints, advice on how to help others succeed and have fun)
Social contract on behavior
Game design notes (what is the purpose goals and limits of theme, code minigames, guidelines for character vs player action, why are policies the way they are in particular)
That sort of thing, so people have an idea where they want to look, and where similar unknown topics may be at.
YES so efficient. It makes it easier to write in a way as well because you can start with the questions themselves and then get around to answering them as you figure it out haha.

RE: criticism not allowed in ad threads is only enforcing a false positive, prove me wrong
Hold up, I'm noticing threads being locked up and discussions popping up, so a conclusion was formed but no official word with an announcement as to the new way we gonna do things? I just care about transparency here is all @Arkandel

RE: Poll: Are MU* video games?
Are MU* games? Certaintly, you can even play them -similar- to video games, however I think the key difference here is the adjective used, -video-. These games create no images, they just transmit text. I will have to go do some digging to get some articles and studies but engaging with images (videos) stimulates the brain in different ways than interacting with text.

RE: What drew you to MU*?
I was extremely young so I couldnt tell you exactly what it was except that I was looking for games online and the search index I had included Achaea and while it was difficult at first, the challenge of reading and typing things quickly to potentially stay alive was thrilling. I shifted from MUDs to MUSHes because to an extent MUDs are less detailed in roleplay. I am ome of those people that eat up the details, most MUD RPers tend to just have 1-2 sentences of "movement" and some dialogue.

@surreality said in Learning how to apply appropriate boundaries:
In part, it's because they are think of it as a fight or a contest instead of a conversation. Any time someone makes the mental transition from 'conversation/communication' to 'fight/contest', the whole frame of reference changes dramatically.
It might not be the worst thing about this, but it also doesn't change the conversation only for that person but it can for everyone participating in it.
Take this somewhat harmless example. I'm in a scene with you and Gany. My character says something confrontational IC and yours comes with a great snappy comeback... then Gany says, OOC, "hahah, she put you in your place Arkandel!".
The moment that happens it ruins a lot of that scene for me, as it's reframed from an IC encounter we can all enjoy into an OOC zero-sum game where one person can emerge as the winner as long as the other loses.
When it happens and I start looking at the same RP from this meta-perspective I can very rarely get back into the groove afterwards. I just don't know of a good way to come back from that.
I can get way behind this line of thinking, in regards to a conversation shifting to a fight/contest. I have a really hard time in all forms of communication at being able to tell when someone else has made this transition and if I should be too now or what, and sometimes I can feel the urge/need to make that change myself but then feel confused as to what prompted me to think I needed to make that conversion. Can I just say that communication is extremely difficult and I wish that all of humanity could just say what they meant and not have it mean something else maybe or what ever.
To the point at hand with the topic, pretty much all these guys like @Arkandel and @Ganymede tend to show great examples of what is and isn't appropriate tableside manners at least in regards to actually dealing with other players at the table. I have very few boundaries by choice, because it is just easier for me to be more open than less which has bitten me in the ass in a number of ways throughout the years but surprisingly never in a way that made me feel uncomfortable.
I have only ever had one person try to force unto me an idea of 'you must because I did quid pro quo' etc so forth. Suffice it to say I didn't talk to them again after I gave them a stern 'Have a good day' and just did not respond to any pages, mudmails or other forms of communication. It doesn't stress me out when someone I have put on my 'idgaf about list' tries to get ahold of me, usually it amuses me and then I forget about it.

@ganymede said in Learning how to apply appropriate boundaries:
- Quid pro quo is disgusting and should be reported. I really care if it is totally in-character; it's disgusting and is one of the sorts of behaviors that should not exist in our hobby.
I am not sure I understand this entirely. I was not even sure what quid pro quo was at first but doing some investigating it appears to be mostly focused around the idea of sexual harassment, mostly in the form of 'If you do this for me I'll get you a promotion' or what ever.
My question though specifically for you is what do you mean by "I really care if it is totally in-character;" If it is taking place in character wouldn't that be part of the point of Roleplay (not saying you have to engage in it yourself and can step away if you want) but isn't that part of roleplay in a way? I am not sure why doing something in character that is slightly skeevy is something that should be reported. (I mean what if sex isn't even involved? What if its quid pro quo on dusting vampires because you got their parking ticket removed?) Just looking for some insight and clarification into your intent by this part of the message.

RE: How old are MU* players?
27 but I am probably unusual in that I have been playing for 21 years. Started with Achaea in 1997 when I was 6 years old.

RE: NOLA 2: Back in the Vieux
I am not saying for me personally, I am saying from what I have seen of people that complain about not being satisified from a wod game those are the two top reasons they are having complaints
-
RE: NOLA 2: Back in the Vieux
@mietze I didn't say not relationship play, relationship simulator. IE the minutia of experiencing a real relationship, not a romanticized cinematic relationship (s) that is clearly the idea behind the themes in vampire and woof
-
RE: Calaveras MUSH
The show burn notice, burnt spy fighting against the ppl that burned him and trying to get his life back thru a series of whacky advenyures and explosions
-
RE: Calaveras MUSH
Do they do like Burn Notice style of stuff too? Or is it all slice of life drama?
-
RE: NOLA 2: Back in the Vieux
@kanye-qwest Sarcasm is best suited in other parts of the forum please and thank you. Also it is not that but what ever sir. Enjoy your day being a oneline troll

RE: NOLA 2: Back in the Vieux
@ganymede I never tried to wrongfun? Anyone? You are equating it to like kinkshaming right? Not doing that, simply pointing out that if WoD MUs dont entertain you, maybe its the game itself not the format. Or maybe its the format and you shoukd try playing it on roll20
@RDC sorry we jacked your thread for a moment to talk about hypotheticals
-
RE: NOLA 2: Back in the Vieux
@ganymede Because that is comic... relief? Disposition? It is at odds with the overall intent of theme and makes memorial moments, but if it was just always absurd would it be as memoriable?
-
RE: NOLA 2: Back in the Vieux
@ganymede I think the problem is players are looking for something from a tabletop game that is better served from another type of game in a MU. People like the setting and the abilities but most of the time when i see people complain about not feeling fulfilled in a wod MU it is one of two things. 1) no STs, 2) they are trying to play in a way that is not really how you are supposed to play wod in the first place. Wod is not a relationship simulator, Monster Hearts, or anything like that. Is a dark gritty environ filled with Bad Things and bad people and bad shit is supposed to happen to and around your character
-
RE: NOLA 2: Back in the Vieux
@lisse24 The story, at least in WoD comes from the tension of drama, be it interpersonal or external. Aside from going all out making a WoD mud you are not going to be able to provide much in the way or creating drama without a ST
