My apartment complex changed ownership, and apparently the new ownership wants to make it very clear that these are their homes; we just borrow them.

A few years back, I was on a trip in Italy. when I was in Venice, I was stuck without a hotel room for the night, so I just wandered around, taking in the sights in the snowy dark. Anyways, around 2 am, I came across a band in the street, playing tubas, trumpets and those big marching band bass drums, singing and being generally loud and obnoxious. I asked them what was up, and they told me a story very similar to yours, and they were just jamming outside their landlord's home because why not?

I don't have any advice or anything, just thought I'd share.

I kind of want to do an XCOM mush today. I hope Ares drops soon.

I hope you'll have policies to account for meatgrinder levels of character turnover and death.

The only way to survive a mission will be to have hawt ts with admin.

Also, my admin name will be RNG.

@Killer-Klown said in Whatever Happened To Star Wars MU*s?:

The problem with that system, as far as Jedi are concerned, is that there was no real cost to be Force Sensitive; you decided if you were or not, and that was that. There was no point or stat cost

There was, it was a huge cost, each force skill cost 1 attribute die in character generation. Many mushes house ruled this away, and it broke the games, especially with the 1nom=1cp formula that many went with. Many mushes also house rule away multi action penalties, which really gums up the system. If you chose to become force sensitive later on, it cost 20cp to get one die in a single skill, which is harsh, because 1die really really sucks and without an NPC teacher, raising force skills costs double what normal skills cost.

I've run WEG on tabletop for a long time, and choosing to be force sensitive was hamstringing your character unless a particular campaign went very long or you went monty hall with character points, but even then, the mundane characters would be absolutely stellar by the time the jedi got up to speed.

    • RE: Feelings of not being wanted...

I think what might be more effective than just generic asking for RP is asking by page if anyone wants to participate in an encounter of some sort, like a mini PrP. I've been able to generate RP on otherwise slow days just by joining people in public spaces and having something odd happening that can trigger conversation. I'll even just use a random NPC rather than my charbit if that works for the better. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't, but I've had much more success doing that than asking on channels. But I find having a premise for a scene is more important than a general desire to play.

One of my favourite ones that I can remember is having my character find an old DMG for some roleplaying game in an estate sale and breaking it open in the starbucks where some people idle. Seeing all the mystic symbols and gory pictures, my character suspected it might have been an encoded spellbook of some sort. This was fun and goofy enough to break the ice with a couple of other characters and we had a nice afternoon of RP around it. Doesn't all have to be shootin stuff.

Dice prevent the "I hit you!","Nahuh I blocked it with my laser gauntlet!", "Nah uh I'm faster than you!" arguments.

Really? Thankfully, I don't have that problem amongst the people I tabletop with, either in person or online.

I find it happens sometimes even with rules and dice. Especially with people who use purple prose and pose walls of text about how seductive/intimidating/awesome their character is despite them having no codified stats supporting such poses. It really irks me, because they then start spazzing out about how I'm a roll player and not a role player. They often really lose it when I suggest they play the role listed on their sheet.

Part of me thinks this is the same three or four people following me from mush to mush being dinks. Like, if charisma is your dump stat, please stop posing like you're the second coming.

      Always loved this about TGG.

I felt the campaigns were a bit quick once it switched to WWII, but that might be because school got busy for me.

Though listening to dude obsessing over becoming a sniper and having his dudes die ever weekend was kind of fun as well.

    • RE: What do RPGs *never* handle in mu*'s? What *should* they handle?

I think having social hit points might be a thing to think about. I /think/ one of the Game of Thrones games did it this way, and I'm pretty sure Savage Worlds has a mechanic for it as well, where you need 3 raises over a scene in order to convince important NPCs to do things you want them to.

In order to convince some person to do something that they might not wish to do, you have to wear them down with arguments, and convince them over an encounter and nag them till they take out the trash.

When people see their social hit points are running low, and they really don't want to do something, their character would be uncomfortable enough that they'd leave the situation, or change things up like start a physical fight. Or you know, go to their room and turn up the stereo so they can write goth poetry in peace.

This would help fix the one role to turn people into a sock puppet thing, I think. If someone starts sleazing on you, and you don't like it, it gives you the chance to leave, slap them or straight up tell them to fuck off.

They were at Austin Film Festival this past weekend and had a talk.
In this talk, they basically just joked around the entire time about 'lol we had no idea what we were doing the entire time! we don't even know why they gave us a show to begin with, guys!'

I wonder if in their minds they saw the whole scene as humble-bragging and trying to do a whole imposter syndrome thing that gets turned around when the moderator at the talk fawns over them telling them they're actually brilliant. And everyone cheers and carries them out of the festival on their shoulders.

@SG I was always more concerned with other NPCs doing something stupid and drawing the horror to us.

But yes, the fact that just about anything could bring the alien to you bordered on OP. Like the damn thing had godlike hearing. But only in regards to YOU, not the other nitwits on the station.

I kind of love how by default it turned on any mic pluged into your computer so if you screamed IRL, it counted in game. I don't know if they patched that away due to privacy concerns or not, but it's so cruel-cool.

    • Do people like skill challenges?

I know a lot of people (myself included) hate on 4e, but one of the cool things to come out of it, in my opinion were the skill challenges mechanic.

I was thinking of doing non combat tasks with pseudo combat rules(using Science! attacks versus Mysterious Anomaly's AC type thing), and remembered the skill challenge system.

Was this something a lot of people enjoyed? Or do people typically prefer doing a roll and handwaving the hours spent on it as downtime bullshit so I can go kill mooks?

Loved Picard, only qualm is that hiring an actual fight choreographer made it feel non trek to me. I miss the janky palm strikes and double axe handles. But it's such a minor cost of admission to get TNG fanservice I don't mind it that much.

@Lotherio said in What RPG SYSTEM do you want to play on a Mu*?:

      WEG d6 for simplicity.

Oh yeah, d6 is also great! My big issue with it, is how games tend to push up the difficulties for simple things. I once went through cg on a game(grymsyn something, or erebus.. I forget what it was called, it was based on the shatterzone box set) that listed the TN for climbing a ladder in the teens. When I asked about it, the headwiz said that with characters always being so powerful, he had to ramp up the difficulties so things would be harder. He didn't appreciate my arguement that that meant that Worker's Comp would be bankrupt within months with all of those electricians falling off their ladders while trying to put in lightbulbs.
