That said, back in the day Firefly wasn't my cup of tea either.

IIRC Firefly got a poor reception because they aired out of order and didn't make sense. And they jumped around time slots, which will kill a show pretty quickly.

For Discovery, I feel like CBS is paying critics to be very supportive, I keep reading blogs who are like 'wtf is with fans, amirite?' and I wonder what's going on with these critics? TV is flooded with gritty, pessimistic and dark shows right now, is it any wonder many fans are preferring the light hearted optimistic view in Orville, even if it isn't the most stellar writing?

@auspice FOR THE RECORD, what you currently make is not the business of anyone but you and your employer. What you're looking to make is already the acceptable answer for that. 😉

(I'm glad your mishearing worked out in your favor.)

I'd argue coworkers should know what their coworkers make, especially in fields where pay is negotiated.

Discovery, on the other hand, continues to engage me.

Has the crew stopped taking stupid pills yet? I completely checked out when the first officer tried to take on the waterbear with a knife.

That moment when Oskar hits the bully in Let the Right One In. That kid had the most annoying face, we was totally on Joffrey's level.

I always try to make a winger or defender go up through some team like the Brandon Wheat Kings or London Knights and then get drafted by the Red Wings. Like an asshole, I delete the character and re-try the whole process in hopes of getting something else.

      What is this, Shadowrun NHL?

I had this happen to me on a D&D mush once because I wasn't wearing 'sensible adventuring shoes' in my description. The Gm wanted to apply a -5 to everything I did for wearing wooden sandals you see in like every ninja cartoon ever.

I kinda hate galaxy spanning star wars mushes for this reason. I just popped into Star Wars Rebirth recently and was shocked it had so many players, but finding RP is like pulling teeth because everyone just idles in their ship or are spread out one PC per planet.

@jaded HK might be the easiest, Gunshow gets a shock baton and flashbangs as normal gear. With a hasted adept you could probably do it in most missions. I don't know if any of the paid runners have knock out gear or if you'd have to just run interference with them.

@jaded I'm tempted to try a Flashbang/shock baton runthrough just to see if it's possible to shadowrun without killing anyone.

I just wrapped up Shadowrun Hong Kong. I have to say I've really enjoyed this series. SR Returns was probably the low point, but it was still really good. Dragonfall and HongKong had really interesting stories that kept me invested, and some of the side quests were pretty funny.

As a GM, though, I don't understand how issuing frag grenades to building security makes any sense. The damage they must do to furniture and equipment is nuts.

My dwarven forge dice finally arrived. I can't wait to ruin my dungeon master's table with them! Bring on the lycanthropes, I have mithril silver dice!

I can't wait to step on the high precision metal d4 when it falls on the floor.

Essentially the new gen of Ewoks something has to be marketed as a cuddly toy after all.
Hopefully these won't be taking down supposedly high quality well equipped space soldiers with rock and stick, though sadly I would not bet against that happening either.

I didn't mind ewoks messing up stormtroopers in hand to hand, they had to be super strong to get those logs up in the trees in time for the battle, plus, after learning how freakishly strong chimps are, it really makes sense that bear people would mess up a human.

There's already discussions on ways to enhance the 'OH GOD THEY KILLED KENNY YOU BASTARDS' beyond hoping people can give a damn about an NPC that was in two ST poses.

Because this is a thing I care much about and I think I've even had discussions with @Seraphim73 in the past on it.

I remember in one of my scenes on BSUnification, the players seemed actually choked up when the throwaway NPCs bought it. I may have been cheating by throwing a pupper into the mix, though, but I was really impressed with the buy in by the players for that mission.

@misadventure I particularly liked how they named their skill levels. I remember a month or two ago on Ares, there was a discussion about what to name the levels and it seemed nobody could really agree, but Aliens had very clear names that made sense.

@Ghost I think a game like that would translate well to an automated mush environment. Though, that might be more mud like than some people like.

      Edit to add:

Oh nice! I had something like this going in the aliens(ish) universe, but kind of lost steam, and started thinking d6 might be the way to go for what I wanted. As a military romp fs3 would be fine!

Yeah, even if you hate the system, GURPS makes fantastic splat books that will help you with nearly any game you're running.

I'd recommend GURPS but I really don't like their vehicle combat. It's easy enough to kind of wing, though. Just make sure your PCs fasten their seatbelts. I've never had a TPK so fast as when the gang tried to run someone over with an aircar in Traveller and we discovered that slamming into a boulder at 70kph will kill you superfuckingfast.

Cyberpunk 2020 might meet your needs.

Savage worlds has great vehicle combat, but I haven't really touched on their matrix stuff.

I think D6 Space might meet most of your needs the best, though. It's easy, it's free and it's super simple to wing stuff on the fly.

    • RE: How much plot do people want?

Honestly, I'd just like to have one or two plots where my decisions actually make a difference to anything. I'm happy to tag along and blast things once in a while, but by far the most meaningful RP I've had in the past 3 years is chatting in a crew lounge or hanging out in a safehouse chatting about the Urban Brawl league. Most plots I've taken part in have either no significance beyond a payday, or are held so tightly to predetermined outcomes, it's like reading the GM's storytime blog.

Gonna jump on the Orville train.

Snoozed through most of Discovery's first episode, I guess I've got Klingon fatigue, even if they are blue this time around. Is it a completely new continuity? I don't really care at this point. I wish they'd do a series about rebuilding Cardassia after the war. I feel like reconciliation with enemies and rebuilding is more important a theme these days than creating new ones.

Orville's first kept me interested. Everything was new in it, even though the jokes were corny and mailed in, the mcguffin was at least interesting.
