@Sparks Thanks! Tryin' that one now....

Notification Center isn't working still and maaaaan does it hate Dark mode and I ALSO cannot delete new worlds..or add characters. Mmm. I'll come back to this one.

Ugh. Dark mode will require rewriting a buuuunch of things, unfortunately.

Are you using the rc4 build, or did you grab rc3 by mistake? Also, did you just copy atop the old copy of Atlantis? If so, I'd delete the app and then copy the 0.9.9.6 version over; copying the 64-bit version atop the 32-bit versions sometimes seems to keep chunks of the old frameworks, which causes Weird Things to happen.

@Sparks Quickie question. I'm on Mojave and just started using 0.9.9.5. How do I make notifications show for pages? I haven't been able to use that functionality since OSX updated one of the big cats. Be cool to use it again.

You can use Growl Version Detective (from Growl.info) to replace the embedded framework with Growl 2, which will make it use Notification Center. Alternatively, you can snag the 0.9.9.6 test build to try, which is already converted over and will do notification center itself.

@A-Meowley Out of curiosity, can you try using Source List view style temporarily, just to see whether your spawn problem is specific to tab style, or if it affects all of them?

@Sparks Heya! In vs 0.9.9.6-rc4 I was unable to get my spawns to work at all; the spawn window in Address Book + World Preferences was seemingly empty, but when I fidgeted around with it I could see that my various spawn still technically existed (saved over from my prior version of Atlantis), the client just wasn't opening up new spawn windows for me to access (I use tab style). Seems like all the info that was being sent to those spawns was just getting lost somewhere.

Huh. I tested with tabs, and my spawns showed up properly. 😕 Can you tell me anything unusual about your setup that I might want to use to reproduce the issue?

I can reproduce the spawns not deleting from the world record, though, so I'll look into that.

Additionally, in 0.9.9.6-rc4 I could create new worlds, but not delete them.

      Also can't reproduce this.

@A-Meowley Huh. I'll look at the tab view; I use Source List style, but I did test with the tabs... however, I might've broken something along the way. I'll look at the deleting worlds too.

MUSH Text Editor is probably gonna be broken in 0.9.9.6, until I figure out why the heck that textview doesn't show anything.

@mietze My power is flickering. 😞 crosses fingers everything stays on

Also, the house behind me butts up right against the fence, and the roof overhang actually almost crosses the fence into my yard. The overhang of their solar-panel-covered roof. I'm just waiting for things to warm up juuuuust enough for all that accumulated snow to slide free and come crashing down into the parking area behind my house.

FFS Seattle. I have about 2 feet of snow in parts of my backyard. And still more is coming down.

This weather has been completely bananapants crazy. And it's still snowing at my house (near Northgate) at 6pm.

Give that a try and let me know if anything's horribly broken.

Roz, you're running an unreleased 0.9.9.5 version I rolled that uses Notification Center rather than the old Growl embedded style; that might be the difference you're seeing there.

If it's horribly broken for others, you can try the unreleased 0.9.9.5 at http://riverdark.net/atlantis/downloads/Atlantis-0.9.9.5.zip — that should at least work a little better on modern versions of macOS.

Edit: I tried to release an 0.9.9.6 fully-64-bit version, but it seems to break scroll wheels and a few other things, so I've pulled that and will keep poking at it.

So @insomniac7809 and I, after almost 11 years together, have finally decided to get hitched. Thus far we have:

      First off, congratulations!

And I already have family members complaining about things they don't like. How about you fuck off, Aunt Karen?

There is a tradition in my family that has been kept alive for literally generations: everyone just elopes. My maternal great-great-grandparents eloped, but my maternal great-grandmother was the one who deliberately turned it into a tradition (which isn't really surprising, as she's also the one who got deported from Germany for stealing a ferry and is in fact the source of approximately 90% of all family anecdotes that start with "so, you won't believe this, but..."). My maternal grandparents eloped, as did my great-uncle. My parents eloped. And my brother eloped (though he later got divorced; the marriage didn't really survive his military deployment).

      It works surprisingly well.

So in a pinch, remind Aunt Karen that if she doesn't like the way you're planning things, you could always just elope?

We scheduled an HVAC installation so we'll have air conditioning on the upper floor this summer (since my house has huge windows and gets unreasonably hot there). This was scheduled for Monday through Wednesday of this week.

This meant dismantling my bedroom, my home office, and my housemate's home office. Unplugging everything from computers (and in my case, dismantling a VR rig), removing pictures from the walls, getting desks out of the way, and so on. We did this, with some effort, this past weekend; it left the two home offices temporarily unusable. But hey, it's only three days, no big deal.

Sunday night, the temperature dropped and it started to snow. By Monday morning, we had way more snow than usual for Seattle, and the roads were icy. The HVAC folks called and rescheduled us for Tuesday-Thursday. Fine, that's understandable.

The snow stopped on Monday, but the temperatures dropped still further (17 degrees F is not normal for Seattle). Anywhere that isn't snow is now sheets of ice. So, unsurprisingly, the HVAC folks called and cancelled again, but can't push us Wednesday-Friday since it would run up against another job. This is understandable; I cannot blame them for not wanting to try to work on the exterior parts of this system in this weather, and hopefully the next job will not also have to be pushed.

So they've rescheduled us to Wednesday-Friday of next week when, hopefully, all the snow and ice will be gone.

However, this means either we have to put the various rooms back together, put the desks back, etc., and then dismantle them again later, or we leave the home offices unusable for basically two weeks total (from this past weekend through next Friday).

I would find this less obnoxious if the ice had not meant that my workplace told folks to work from home rather than risking traffic. I mean, normally WFH isn't an inconvenience as I have a home office, but right now...

(Additional irritation: my gaming PC is also in my home office, and so also presently dismantled. Dangit, there's a Division 2 beta starting Thursday, people!)

    • RE: Wheel of Time

@gryphter said in Wheel of Time:

I would love to see a Wheel of Time game of any stripe running on an Evennia engine, personally. I might even consider throwing real money at such a thing to see it happen.

The thing is, Ares is a complete game in a box. You may need to modify a few things, but it has forums and bboards and everything already written, so unless you have something you really want to change (like adding magic to FS3), mostly you just need to set up theme and pick which dice system you want to use.

Evennia is incredibly powerful, but it's really more a framework to be used to build a game. It's more like MOO or LPMUD in that sense, where you still need a 'core' to actually give you functionality. And there's not really any 'standard' cores for Evennia (though Arx's code has been released freely and could admittedly be used as a core). So if you want to do an Evennia game, you can make it exactly what you want, it will be totally bespoke, but it will be a lot more work.

If you don't have incredibly specific needs, Ares is absolutely the best path to getting a game up and running.

(I admittedly slightly prefer Evennia from a coding standpoint, but that's just because Python is a language I use every day, whereas I touch Ruby maybe once a year.)

    • RE: EPIC vs Steam

@Thenomain Having been on the closed alpha and the VIP weekend, my general impression thus far is that Anthem plays very much like Mass Effect's multiplayer mode, except with flight, much larger maps, and a Destiny-style loot mechanic. Interspersed with the ghostly remains of a single-player Bioware RPG between missions to advance the plot.

I like ME multiplayer, the NPC/plot stuff I've seen so far was enjoyable, and the flight is really fun if you have a controller. (It is flaming garbage with keyboard and mouse.)

Plus, the bartender is voiced by Jack McBrayer!

I'm not a fan of epic or their launcher, I'd rather use Origin. So for me, anything going Epic exclusive is a hard pass.

Having experienced some of Origin's weirder quirks, this reads to me a little like "I'm not a fan of having a fork stuck in my eye, I'd rather have it stuck in my foot." I mean... yes, fair, but I'd prefer not being stuck with a knife in the first place.

I get what you're saying... but...

      alt text

This alone turned my opinion right around on Origin, LOL.

Yeah, I will grant that Origin has bizarrely fast download speeds compared to other storefronts. And I still use it, too; there's games in there I want to play (Anthem included), so I suffer through the occasional weirdness ("Sorry, I'm going to have to verify those game files before you can play; this should only take 30 minutes." "You wanted your cloud saves? LOL NOPE." and so on) to get those games.

      I love Murderbot.

The Murderbot Diaries novellas are wonderful; they make me happy. Most relatable killer robot ever.

(I'm even more happy that they were so successful that her publisher has contracted her to write a full-length Murderbot novel!)

So... anyone going to be playing Anthem in the open demo this weekend?

I was in the closed alpha and the VIP demo, and despite the (many) quirks and issues, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the game; I'll probably jump in again this weekend to keep trying out my Interceptor build.

(Do not play with keyboard and mouse on PC, though. The kb+m controls are garbage, while it is a complete joy with a controller.)
