    • RE: Kushiel's Debut

The best part is, I never bitched. I never took part in the gossipy crap. I complained quietly to one person when I was frustrated, a couple of times. When Avi and Lanval blew up and quit, I tried to smooth the situation over. I tried to talk to Ash about my problems in good faith. Then I logged off to take a break, and Ash shared the conversation we'd had with somebody else, and that somebody else came after me for it with inaccurate information, off of the game. I still wasn't saying anything nasty about them, just that we'd had a disagreement. Then I logged in and was in the freezer, apparently because I'd pissed off Skaldia beyond reason enough that the thought of me being on his game disgusted him.

I didn't do anything wrong. At no point. I spoke my mind directly to Asherat. There was no toxic anything. What they did was WRONG.

I don't really think I need to refute this shit; the people that play there and the people that know me know how utterly ridiculous this is. But hey, this is how they treat people that DARE to speak up against the bullshit they're pulling. So.

And for fun and kicks, here's the shit I got on Facebook from @Echx (who plays Reynard) after Asherat shared the conversation with her when I was taking a break.

Okay, so. I don't know what you know about what happened on Friday, but Ash showed me the page you sent her about an apology to the player base and I feel kind of obligated to correct some perception you have.

There was no 'Chosen Few' thing. That was not a thing that was done by staff alts, or for staff alts. Liana may have done part of the ritual that was done, but she was the ONLY staff character involved. Everybody else? All the PCs, all of the groundwork, all of the setup... that was all PC stuff. The individuals who got picked to participate got picked BY A PC, to fill slots, because the ritual needed one scion from each Companion.

If people want to be pissed that they didn't get involved in ONE scene that finally wraps up two+ game years of a massive issue, that's ultimately on the people who want to be pissed that they didn't get involved. Not everybody gets to be included in every scene. Not everybody gets to go to every party, not everybody gets to go on every adventure.

Sure, this is the first major plot resolution thing staff has run in a long ass time. How encouraging is it for them to want to do anything else if the reception they get is people stomping off in a huff because they didn't get picked for this one thing?

Whelp, sorry, @surreality, I've lost my ability to be mature about this.

I just received this e-mail from Skaldia, titled 'Good Riddance'. Me.

I cannot keep quiet on this any longer. I was trying to keep quiet, and hoping you would do the same, but apparently you just can’t help yourself. I refuse to apologize to you, or to give in to your “demand” that we apologize to the playerbase. First, the Longest Night is not “fluff”, it is the biggest social event of the IC year for the setting. The fact that another small scene was taking place at the same time to wrap up a plot that has been going on for almost two years, or maybe more, does not change that. And that small scene was not all “staff alts”, as you claimed, but the scene was small because given the nature of it, and IC attitudes toward the occult in the setting, it made sense that there would not be many people involved. If logic offends you so much that you have to throw this sort of hissy fit, that is your problem, not mine. Not everyone will be involved in every plot, so you really should get over yourself. In your jobs, and Aviana’s, and Lanval’s, no mention was made of looking into a way to undo the ritual. It was all stuff about the Yeshuites in the city, whether they were possibly going to cause trouble or had Black Cross leanings. It is not Asherat’s fault, nor Shemhazai’s, nor mine, that none of you were clear about what you were wanting from those jobs.

And if this was, as you said, a matter of other issues coming to a head, then why did no one, including you, bring those issues to my attention before having a temper tantrum and rage-quitting? Too cowardly? Or would that not feed your martyr complex enough? This is the biggest issue, for me, with the way that you and your little posse left the game. Not one of you had it in you to bring your complaints to the attention of the headwiz. Not one. Instead, you stayed in your little echo chamber, where you could complain without other voices present to explain what was going on or that could possibly do something about your issues. Then you leave in the middle of an event you were supposed to be running, without a word to me or Asherat? Your nattering about ethics is so hypocritical at this point it nearly makes me want to vomit. This is why your characters were in the freezer, because there was no way in Hell I was going to be able to put up with you in the game any longer. Go infect some other game with your toxicity, please.

Mmm. I had a disagreement with Asherat and Skaldia over how they were handling something. This something is probably why other people are quitting, if they're quitting. I'm not going into that, that's their story to tell, and some people might not find it any problem at all anyway so it's not something I feel like I need to warn anyone about.

But. Asherat shared my conversation with her (staff to staff) with someone else, after I'd logged off and said I was taking a week off to calm down. That someone laid into me on Facebook. Between that and the fact that I no longer feel ethically comfortable endorsing the game due to the original disagreement, I'm done.

I think that it could be easily defined that way, and likely is to someone. I do not personally feel like I am creating art, and I'm not ever going to bother to try, that's not why I'm here. I'm here to make and have fun.

@lordbelh There's a story, but I'm too tired to tell it. I'm not really interested in any more drama than 'hey folks, I don't endorse this anymore'. Sorry, I know dirt is fun.

I know I sound super cranky about it. I do wish them the best of luck, I am just disappointed that it has this setup, since I'd love to play on a DA game and this factor kills my interest.

I don't hate FCs either, I think there are some games where it's appropriate. Dragon Age is not one of those games.

@Steel It's fun for the person playing it. The audience, not so much. If they can do such amazing things with a FC, just imagine how awesome they'd do with their own PC.

      @icanbeyourmuse said in Character Rosters:

@acceleration I know lotsa people who would prefer not to CG on a new game until they get a feel for the game and don't look for the 'important positions' until they get a feel. Might be just the types of people/places we roll with.

Why bother asking people what they think when you already have all the answers and are just going to respond like this?

Okay. So. The objection I had was that this is a game about X. It was then stated that no, it is not a game about X. Which turned my question into 'why have X at all'?

I don't think it makes them bad people or even a bad game, it's just that hell would freeze over before I'd play on a game with this setup.

I think it's a poor design choice that will ultimately do more harm than good, but it does seem like they're set on doing it this way, soooo...best of luck, I guess. Disappointing.

If the FCs don't matter, what's the point of including them?

    • RE: Dragon Age: Smoke & Shadows

I just have no interest in being a backdrop for all the interesting stuff to happen for someone else. Including FCs means they are the story, and it's such a small number of them that most folks get left out in the cold. At least with comic games there are SO MANY that it's a different thing entirely. But... it's a single player RPG. If someone is going to play Hawke...like. Why? What's the point? The good part of this stuff is the setting, the world, the theme -- these things are awesome. Choosing instead to focus on the story of a limited list of characters is not just a waste...if I wanted that, I could just go play the game itself. I'm disappointed that the first DA game we are seeing chose to do this. I won't be playing there for this reason.

I do know of another DA game in basic stages that is, afaik, doing it just prior to Inquisition, without FCs, following a different storyline with some of the same general events. So I'm willing to wait.

I do wish y'all the best, but...ew. Really.

    • RE: Mud Hosting, for 0 budget?

If you set it up to run on your own machine over your home internet connection, make sure you go and read your agreement with your ISP. Comcast in particular at least used to have some particularly strong language about doing anything that allowed incoming connections if you don't have a business account.

@Ide said in Attributes or No?:

I think the idea that in attribute-less skill systems a player gets to pick what attributes are important to them (e.g. Physique) is a compelling argument for leaving attributes out. It's simpler (with the caveat that you have to watch for Bob's Physique vs. Sue's Brawn...are they the same thing?), it's more flexible, and it offers more customization.

I don't understand. How does a player get to pick what's important if the choice doesn't exist?

I really like the idea of a Dragon Age game, but including FCs at all seems to me to be missing the point. 😕 I wish y'all the best of luck with this, though!
