RE: Virtual table-top
My OTT group is trying to get Fantasy Grounds working, and one of my players just---can't connect. Can't figure out what's going on, everything is setup like it ought to be, and it just doesn't work. Which is irritating. Otherwise, it's really not noob friendly, but it is learnable, and I think the complexity is worth it. If I can only get it to work.

RE: MU Things I Love
Craaaaaaafting again. I CAN DO IT. NEW STUFF, not just the same recycled template wear.

RE: Emotional bleed
I still don't get it. That is the case, yes. What do feelings have to do with that?
-
RE: Emotional bleed
I don't understand what you're trying to say. Acknowledging that humans have feelings about things does not make the situations you are describing any better or any worse.
eta: what impact does having emotions about things have upon whether or not you have integrity?

RE: Emotional bleed
Ohhh, that brings up a really good coping mechanism: deal with it OOC. Like, if something is particularly upsetting or causing bad bleed and you recognize it, you don't actually have to RP it out. Drop to out of character, discuss it with the other player, roll dice if necessary, and then move on. Remove the emotional charge, take the wind out of your own sails, whatever. There's this weird stigma against handling things OOCly when sometimes that's really, really, really the healthy thing to do.
If you cannot, in the course of playing your character, drop OOC and actually discuss / come to a conclusion about results without the RP happening -- like, you can't conceive of it -- that is a REALLY big sign that there's a problem you need to take a minute to self-eval on.
ETA: I reduced an IC breakup to dice rolls once, because the other player decided to have their character get on the emotional blackmail train and I wasn't having it. It was terrible and not fun very quickly, and so I just noped out. This is also my story of how I became a bad target for a fairly well known creeper. It's the same story.

RE: Is this a really dumb theme?
I mean, no. Not if you think it'd be fun to play, can think of what people would RP out, and are willing to run it. Every idea can be boiled down to something that sounds dumb, at its core. Execution is more important than premise, and this premise isn't bad. There's LOTS of interest in pulp-y stuff. Like lots and lots and lots and lots.
eta: is it gonna be the next big tent game? nope. nbd as long as you manage your expectations.

RE: Emotional bleed
I think also personality factors really big here, because there's going to be a significant difference between someone who just has Big Moods all the time (hi) and someone like my partner, who is pretty emotionally reserved. My muppet flailing and his muppet flailing are going to be VERY different, and one can be ignored where the other one reaaaaaaaally should be addressed.

RE: Emotional bleed
So, I'm sure no one is surprised to hear that I am one of those people who likes to sit with my feelings, make friends with them. A significant appeal for me with mushing is the emotional connection/content, just like it is with video games, just like it is with television. If I'm not crying at some point, I'm not invested enough to really enjoy myself, and I have a problem with being able to play if I'm not wired to my PC's brain on some level. While I'm 'plugged in', part of my enjoyment is experiencing my character's emotional content. I wrote a private journal-y thing a few days ago and made myself BAWL with it. Nobody will ever see that, I just like crying I guess.
It becomes a problem for me when:
a- the emotions continue after time away (turning the game off doesn't make the feelings stop)
or
b- I start making my feelings other peoples' problem (people on the game, people who share meatspace with me)Sometimes problems are OK; something falling through after a RL year of work, I'm GOING to be pretty inconsolable, whether it's a tabletop character or a mush plan. If I strip mush-context out, can I explain it to a non-gamer and they'll understand? This is OK. These emotions get dealt with just like the same emotions that are caused by other major disappointments or loss or whatever. Friends, self-care, distraction, whatever.
Sometimes it's just unhealthy, particularly when you're talking about anger or SPECIFICALLY, feeling personally wronged by the choices of other CHARACTERS (not players, even though yes, players are behind them) -- this stuff is awful, and it's bleed that needs to be addressed immediately. If self-coaching / reminders of what I'm dealing with doesn't make the feelings stop (talk myself down out of the tree, these people did not just kill my darling), then I need to unplug and walk away until I'm feeling like a reasonable human being again. This actually includes the feelings that happen in reaction to genuinely being wronged, to be clear -- in the moment, it can't be addressed in a healthy fashion, so you really just do need to unplug until your behavior is at least under control.
ETA: I mean, I am still fucking broken about (spoiler) in FFXIV. I played through that eleventy billion years ago, and my ass takes my PC to the in game grave with some regularity. I LIKE CRYING.

RE: General Video Game Thread
There's not really enough of a difference to say I'm playing it for any differences. I just like playing through it.
ETA: I used to make baby blood elves, play them up through finishing the ghostlands, and then delete them. Every month or two, really. I just liked the content. This is mostly the same, on a bigger scale. For star wars, I go back and play it long enough to level a character all the way through, then stop and go do other stuff. Then when new content comes out, I go back and update all of my "actual" characters, catch them up. Repeat. Usually I play either the Jedi Knight or the Sith Warrior, but sometimes I do the other classes, too. The Smuggler is pretty much the only one I haven't done a million times, because I dislike the playstyles available and the Agent's story is SO GOOD that if I can stomach the playstyle I'm playing an agent. ^^

RE: General Video Game Thread
I have a really chill guild that weirdly?? is a content clearing behemoth that...lets me hang out in a corner, no big deal. It's nice because there's people THERE on those rare occasions I do have group content I want/need to do, but I completely flake out the second anyone actually expects anything of me. I don't really think the group content is...uh. I guess it's not like TERRIBLE, I've played worse, it's just not why I'd suggest anybody play the game. I love the game death, but -- I'm on my 5th Jedi Knight. The story/leveling experience is really my go-to.
by myself. nobody ducking talk to me unless I say hi first. k? k.

YOU PEOPLE call what WHAT?

RE: General Video Game Thread
It's honestly way better approached as a single-player game with occasional multi-player content (not mmo content) and a social background. Play it long enough to catch up on the story, then wait for the next bit of story. Their business model is built around players doing that (just like FFXIV), so it doesn't hurt them any. The Bounty Hunter is one of the weaker class stories, but it's one of the strongest going through the xpacs, with several chapters in places that get extra bits of story relevance and things.

RE: General Video Game Thread
It's never going to compare to WoW for endgame. Not even remotely. There is no safety dance, and I doubt there will ever be anything on that level, because it's not that sort of game. There ARE dailies on eleventy billion planets, endgame (and less than endgame) raids, rep grinds, and now there's conquest (weekly goals for loot and points for your guild to get more loot). Also, 'master' difficulty on the chapter -based expansions. It's still primarily single-player story-focused content that has opportunities in places for you to play with other people. If you're looking for That MMO Endgame Experience though, WoW's new expansion is probably the better bet.

RE: General Video Game Thread
It is really hard to speak to without spoilering anything, but the thing that (the two recently returned companions, they came together) are all upset about from the last content update we got. That's the dungeon we get this time I am pretty sure.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I am really looking forward to the story conclusion we're getting next month. ^^

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
Wire along the nose as part of the mask, so it form-fits to the nose and along the cheekbones. That makes the breath go down instead of up.

RE: Dead Celebrities 2020
Probably. I suppose I'm just particularly sensitive to the topic in question.
