If you want to play angel/human hybrids who chain each other and then shove sticks up their urethras, you can play at Kushiel's Debut.

OMG why did no one tell me this was what that place was about!!! <rushes off to app immediately>

    • RE: What is your turning point?

@thenomain You aren't. I have had it happen.

      It's about 50/50:

      • They're inviting me because they want to play with me and <game> looks like a fun place to do that.

      • "I am having so much fun on <game> and am already really busy all the time there and there's no lack of stuff for me to do yay that's so rare you should play here, too!" and then them never having time to do anything with me because they're already fully engaged re: the time they have available for that game with what they already have going on. Sometimes they may intend to play with me and just don't realize how thin they're already stretched, others, it's just "I'm having fun here and I think you would, too" with zero intention of playing with me there.

I don't actually mind the 'I don't intend to play with you there' variant in most cases, provided the person makes this clear from the start. Otherwise, it feels too string-along and just becomes a frustrating mess.

      @HorrorHound Can, but likely wouldn't.

The alien beauty thing is a big one for me.

Bear in mind, by my definition, that's more 'art design from Nightbreed' and uncanny valley like whoa and urban primitives and Lumleyesque people-furniture and sit still my dear, I'm going to make you pretty...

    • RE: Interest Gauge: City of Mist Game

It's also somewhat possible to hybridize the two.

I mean, as it is, a lot of people play WoD as 'superheroes with fangs or fur'.

Pretty sure that indicates an audience for something that might be along the lines of a superheroes game, but with supernatural overtones and supernatural sources of powers. You could make a few basic templates of a sort if people want a simple pick-up-and-go for basic creature 'species' of a sort (generic vampire, generic animal shifter, etc.), and allow for more freeform things as well for those willing to crunch it.

As it is, there are characters like John Constantine and Doctor Strange in comics that have a much more mystical/supernatural bent. A society in which these types are 'out of the coffin' could be pretty damn creative and fun, I'd think.

I will admit, it was one of the fun aspects of Darkmetal: supers were known. Hunted/illegal, but known. If stripping out some of the edgelord trenchcoats and katanas and grimdark and cyberpunk from that sort of arrangement? I would think that could be a heck of a lot of fun. (And even some of the edgelord grimdark could be a thing in certain parts of town, etc.) You could create a fairly interesting world out of that pretty easily -- like licenses for being a thing, etc. in a similar fashion to Nigthwatch/Daywatch/etc. as well, and so on.

@Ganymede It goes beyond just PK, too. I cannot even begin to count the number of times I've run across people who act in ways that would have some kind of consequence, but they flip their ever lovin' shit the moment someone so much as says 'boo' to them about it. (The character that mouths off constantly to everyone, the character that never stops acting like a complete brat/idiot, the character that can't seem to stop themselves from whining like the won the gold medal in the first world problems olympics, etc.)

@wizz That would be awesome. I think that honestly sounds like it could be a lot of fun. And to some extent -- more as observed by the complaints people have re: the way a lot of people play WoD -- something like this does seem like something people actually want and will and arguably already play (without having a proper fun home for it).

The town from Teen Wolf comes to mind a bit for this, too. They had some concept about ley lines or sacred sites/etc. drawing such things to the surface that could be useful to steal concept-wise -- something about the specific locations or something that is present there and draws out the supernatural (in this case, corrodes or destroys the veil).

There's an old HBO movie called 'Cast a Deadly Spell' that is the wrong period, but has some elements of this kind of blend going on. 'Lord of Illusions' is more on the horror side, but it has some stuff worth peeking at, too, I'd think.

(The quote is the closing line from Grandpa in The Lost Boys. 😉 )

    • RE: The 100: The Mush

@Miss-Demeanor Sometimes that works, and sometimes it doesn't.

One of the ways a lot of players initially demonstrate the kind of organization, communication, and management skills that makes them good candidates for staff if new staff is being looked for is by running/organizing/managing a group, after all. The group and the game tend to suffer if you force people out like this if they decide to take on a staffing role to help even more. (This is a bottom-up example, which absolutely can be functionally different than a top-down example of someone in staffly power taking on a leadership spot after the fact.)

It also kinda depends on what kind of leadership roles being talked about. If there are dozens and dozens of them to go around, it matters a little less. If it's a minor group, that's a factor. If it's a private group (like the employees of an IC business with some clout or something) vs. 'is it a game-wide faction with major influence open to everyone' is relevant, too. Also... how people get positions -- if players in the group/faction vote for who they want vs. positions are assigned/etc. -- counts for a lot.

Mushers being mushers, I suspect that making it legal, accepted, and normal would probably decrease the amount of wolf-on-wolf TS.

There's a "when nothing is furbidden... " joke to be made here, but pretty much that.

Their reasons for changing it were sound, and it's something I support wholeheartedly, whether it results in more wolf-on-wolf action or not.

Personally, I can't really be bothered to care about anybody else's TS, so rules that make it less likely that anyone is supposed to stress about this on some thematic level? Pretty huge boon to werespheres everywhere, player and staff.

    • RE: Character 'types'

@three-eyed-crow I have one weird exception to this, and it’s somewhat limited: if the characters meet in a crisis situation, and the traumatic event (note that isn’t plural) is somehow relevant.

For instance, if a character has a rat phobia due to being swarmed by them as a kid and our characters have been chased into and abandoned subway tunnel? Sure, OK, that’s fine to mention as the reason they’re freaking out more than normal so long as it doesn’t totally dominate the scene. It’s the classic ‘action movie quick trauma reference’ sort of trope.

If we’re strangers chatting in line for coffee, or that segues into how Creepy Uncle Bob touched them where their bathing suit covers and how they really hate beets? No. Just no.

As I said, I'm not addressing the specific person's actions, which provide context and some chance of sussing out actual motivations or attitudes.

      TL;DR

"I'm sorry X was taken that way" does not equal insincere all by itself.

How one phrases things counts. It's relevant. There are ways of conveying, "I'm sorry, I did not intend to offend you." "I'm sorry you took offense," is not one of them.

    • RE: Let's talk about TS.

@kanye-qwest It kinda depends on how someone goes about it.

I wouldn't, for instance, advocate something with the kind of detail that is in Shang's +kinks setup for any game that isn't focused on that content.

A general 'here's a spot for player+character prefs for this' that would let someone write something like these examples, though, is more useful and doesn't quite go there into 'OMG WAY TOO MUCH TMI!':

      • My character really wants to become a mother, and is looking for a baby daddy. I'm not really interested in pregnancy RP, though, so on the player level I'm not pursuing the same goal as the character and expect to have her attempts fail.

      • I'm OK with most adult content, and can't really be offended by language. If you have any sensitivities about it, let me know and I will happily avoid those subjects and stick to the language you prefer.

      • I'm really not into TS. While I'm not opposed to romantic RP, when it comes time to get into the nitty gritty, I will always fade to black without exception.

      • My character is a super flirt, and that may make it seem like she's always thirsty for your character's nethers. This is nothing but an act because she's really insecure and immature about this kind of thing, and will freak out and run if anybody actually ever takes her up on it.

      • My character is pretty kinky, and is into a lot of controversial things, but most of this happens offscreen in downtime. I'm OK with RPing these things with other players in small doses, but it's not something I want to dedicate much of my game time to when I have time to play.

    • RE: Fear and Loathing

@Botulism I would really like to, honestly, in part 'cause one of the folks who shifted over to staff there (I think?) was super cool to me and a friend on FC, and I always found him to be pretty awesome. (Was quick to handle stuff, super open to ideas, always eager to run stuff for people, etc. Five stars, much awesome.)

If I was playing at all, I genuinely would. Y'all have my two favorite spheres (CB and Immortal), and that's a huge draw, too.

I'm just in 'tinker in the corner' mode lately; my heart to play is kinda gone. It isn't a reflection on any of the games out there or anything like that. There's good stuff to be had, absolutely, I'm just not in the right headspace (or heartspace) to jump in and join, and I do still very much appreciate the invitation.

    • RE: Helpful Spellcasting Flowchart

@ganymede 'run for the hills' wasn't magee's phrasing. 'Maybe it's that to you, but it helps me' is the actual antithesis of a 'one true wayist' attitude. There's no implication or accusation of laziness or stupidity being aimed at Cobalt whatsoever. There's no suggestion that it's the only way to learn at all, or that she doesn't understand the game or the rules.

The whole attitude was dismissive and condescending from the jump. 'Oh, sigh, that is a pile of garbage.' It's certainly not constructive, but the untouchables are freely permitted that, I suppose.

Is it intimidating and off-putting to some? Yep. Is it helpful to some? Yep.

Only one person here is making a personal attack, and it's one there's no reasonable basis to make, because the newer poster here never makes the claim or implication that there's any 'one true way'.

The closest thing to it is noting that if someone is intimidated or put off by the chart, it may not be a game they will enjoy, because ultimately it gets a lot more complicated than that, and that's not an unreasonable observation. That's not insulting to anyone. That's not making any claim they're too dumb to understand or learn it. That's a basic awareness that some people just don't like games with complicated systems, and even if there are things one can dabble in in the game that are not very complex as a new player, let's not pretend the game isn't ultimately quite complex with many conditionals to be kept in mind. It's perfectly fine for someone to not enjoy a game like that, and mage is definitely a game like that.

(Oh, because maybe it isn't that easy and doesn't do up real quick.)

There is some thread in the history of the board where the whole 'all disciplinary action should be 100% transparent including all the logs and names and communications with staff involved and posted to the public for discussion' that had a lot of people talking about how this was the best practice ever.

Sadly, it is not just one person suggesting this. <prophet voice>This is a thing that has happened before, and doubtless shall again.</prophet voice>

I don't think that included actual voting on a result... but the voting part really just makes it so much worse. Imagine that setup and Spider on that game. (I take no responsibilities for the emotional trauma that notion induces, or any vomiting that may occur.)
