      @Thenomain

      Theno, I've noticed the 'none of my commands did anything' thing a lot, and when it happens for me, it seems to be something to do with some MU* clients not handling MUD code very well. PotatoMUSH seems to freeze up on most muds, for example. And it's not really a 'freeze', because the client LOOKS like it's still working, you can change windows/etc, but nothing seems to come/go from the MUD window.

      I never encountered that problem with MUSHclient, though.

      @Sunny

      I've personally never played a tabletop like that, so I can't actually say, but I feel like I'd prefer seeing. I dunno, I like actually rolling dice and being able to see the result.

      But, yeah, sorry, that post was more aimed at @coin but the way the quote works, it just shows your post unless clicked.

      How do you feel about your tabletop ST rolling dice behind a screen vs on the table without a screen?

      Seriously. Hell, I had +roll/blind installed on The Reach when I was staffing there, and use it a lot on Eldritch.

      Anyone who can't trust me as a storyteller should not play in scenes I run. I will look at your sheet. I will gauge your character. I will roll stuff secretly and ask you to roll blind. I like to keep the suspense as on the table as possible, especially when I'm running horror.

      Eh, this is definitely not my cup of tea. Not sure how visible rolls affects anything, and there's a mountain of reasons for why obfuscating rolls is potentially not the greatest idea. (For one, it reminds me of Firan.)

      The only (debateably) good thing from hiding rolls is ooc surprise on the player's behalf.

      I don't care so much about the reputations of specific people, but specific games like Serenity and Blood of Dragons...it's very nice to have a handy link to show people so they can properly Buyer Beware them. Even in archival form.

      I think it has become painfully obvious, via the Blood of Dragons thread on these forums, that those types of games will never be free of criticism while forums like this one still exist, and it won't take long for said criticism to rise up again. So while I agree that archives would be cool, I don't think it's a concern in that particular "Buyer Beware" instance, since sooner rather than later, you'll be able to point at a thread here.

      No more hundreds of pages of Firan rants, though. 😞

    • RE: PreMade Grids and Code (Clone Wars Game)

      @Soresu Depending on what system you're wanting to use for gameplay, I think there is a fully set-up codebase for Star Wars SAGA (the d20 game), somewhere, because I've played on like 3 separate games that all had the exact same info files/+map system/etc. No idea who the owner is, or if they'd be willing to share.

      Personally, I think grids are overrated. Unless you're gonna do something where territory is some kind of mechanic (IE, in a vampire game maybe), it's pretty easy to just use RP rooms.

      Sadly, yes, some will. Or, and this has been my experience, escalate /insanely/. Like, "pose random NPC on public street being kinda a dick, so Other PC pulls out every supernatural power they have to curbstomp NPC into the pavement for no goddamned reason". Or one random scene where I had my PC in a bookstore, asking about a random book. NPC said, "Sorry, dude, already sold," so the other PC decides to try and turn it into a graphic torture scene to figure out where the book went.

      Ahhhahaha. 😂 Part of my fear of STing is stuff like this. I've heard so many horror stories.

      @Ganymede

      I will admit this may be a flaw on my part, but personally, I'm always leery of random 'I will run stuff!' things from people (players on the game, not staff) I don't know/haven't played with before, because you have no idea what you are possibly jumping into. I imagine that might be the reason for a low level of reaction.

    • RE: Getting Involved (and getting other people involved)

      (Disclaimer : Yes, a lot of this is like common sense, but I'm going to say it anyways.)

      As we had kind of gone over in the other thread, politics is an easy filler usually for creating easy hooks/reasons for people to get involved or for you get other people involved, but (again) that of course with all of its own drama/problems/extra work for staff/etc.

      Though, even on games with political stuff ongoing, that can be difficult to get into if there's not actually any room for change/fluidity to the system. Knowing nothing is going to change because staff doesn't want to deal with a change in the setting's power structure, or because a certain player/clique has a deathgrip, or whatever the reason might be, takes some of the fun out of plotting.

      Of course the more sandboxy games tend to be where people would have difficulty getting involved.in stuff, but one thing I'm guilty of myself and I see people do all the time, is going into a game like that and making something that has very little reason to be involved with the characters who already exist, and then finding they don't have much to do with the character and moving on to other games because they think that one is boring or making a new char.

      If you show up somewhere and +census says there's 5+ of faction X and faction Y and only 1 member of faction Z, you might want to rethink making your character for faction Z unless you're the sort who can get your own ball rolling (or are apping in with friends).

      If you're not the make-your-own-fun sort, do yourself (and the game a favor) and app into something with an active faction, or something with leanings towards the faction. Usually, people will gladly welcome you and try to get you involved. Find somebody who has a listing on the wanted board and talk to them about coming in with some connections.

    • RE: Kushiel's Debut

      I'm genuinely surprised to hear that the game is even trying to be anything besides nobles fucking each other and prostitutes. I love the Kushiel books (the first trilogy anyways, Phedre, fuck yeah), but the setting is way too sexual, I think (or the way it's conveyed in the books is, anyways). Especially since we all know MUs will turn anything sexual. And I say this as somebody who has no problem with TS or sexual themes, but honestly the (apparently incorrect) assumption that this game is basically Shangrila in Kushiel-theme is why I've never really done more than look at the wiki. Maybe I need to poke at it when I have more time.

      Base default without fill up scenes Blood Pool level. For instance, assume folks are always down 3, and allow certain merits to alter that amount.

      You know, I actually kind of like that idea. Simple, and to be frank, seems like it'd be pretty realistic. I can't imagine most vampires would be running around at 10/10 11/11 12/12 vitae 9 out of 10 nights, which they do on most MUs.

    • RE: Resource Scarcity System

      Just, specifically focusing on Vampire for my comments.

      An in depth, well thought out, coded system for feeding is great and very nice, and adds a level of strategy (sort of) to things like needing feeding grounds and not blowing through 7 vitae for unimportant BS.

      The problem is...I feel like dealing with this is going to get very old, very quickly. Even if you don't do anything at all, your vampire is going through 7 vitae a week (that wake up cost everybody likes to wave), and if you go out to RP (or stay in, to TS), 8/10 times you're acting like the blush of life is active, that's another vitae spend that usually gets waved.

      It will get annoying to deal with. Especially when no other splat (to my knowledge) deals with that struggle (IE, an automatic cost just for existing), and tend to have far easier ways to get their 'energy' back. I mean, mages get mana back from doing stuff like cleaning house. (Been a while since I poked at mage, but I remember that being somebody's form of meditation or wtfever.)

      EDIT : Balancing such a system so that it's actually a possible problem that spawns RP, and is A) not a restrictive pain in the ass or B ) not just a bit of code that is pretty much ignored aside from remembering to run it every couple days, is not going to be an easy task, either. For example, Kingsmouth has feeding code, and actually runs wake up vitae costs, but..the feeding system mostly seemed to be a joke. I heard a staffer say something like there was 650/700 vitae still available on the grid's hunting spots at the end of a week.

      Not to disparage anybody, because everyone has different tastes, but I am very 'meh' about Star Wars games that heavily restrict Force Users and only let you play them when the staff decides.

      I love urban fantasy. For the most part, WoD is it except for the rare times when some other game system/setting comes along. And even when they do, they then have to actually take off.

      Pretty much this. Closest thing to a universe akin to Kim Harrison's books or Laurell K.'s (early) books.

      The fact that it's one of the only steadily popular MU theme's with more than 1-2 games helps, too.
