In news that is not surprising but is certainly disappointing, Tim Duncan has officially retired.
I congratulate him on an amazing career and wish him the best in the future. The NBA will be less fun to watch without him.

I just wanted to chime in here and say, I'm really disappointed at some of these people commenting on this topic. I thought that here, of all places, would be a nice and cool new place to connect with people and let them know we're around if they want to come hang out and have fun.
You do realize we are the decedent of WORA don't you?
As a community we have gotten a lot more constructive and while the environment is a lot less vitriolic then WORA was; the first inclination of a lot of the posters, at times myself included is to tear apart things, Fights 'n Tights got no worse treatment then a number of other games of varying genres.Personally I give you thumbs up, more games good, more variety in games good so keep up the good work.
It is not a game for me, not because of the sexual side of things but because of the lack of a system, but fully applaud the effort put into making the game work and survive. Try not to get discouraged my the griping it is not meant personally and is mostly just the nature of us. Like Statler and Waldorf kvetching is our default setting. -
RE: How Many Alts Would An Alt User Alt If An Alt User Could Use Alts
I am very divided on the topic of alts. I do not make them, or rather very rarely make one. I have never had more the two characters at one time on any game.
However, I generally am in favor of letting people alt all they want as long as they can keep them active and avoid alt conflicts it is fine with me.
I do generally try to avoid having close IC connections with the characters of folks with a lot of alts though, this is for one very selfish reason, a lot (by no mean all) of the serial alters are also serial alt droppers, which is something I completely support if you are not having fun on a char or can have my fun on a different one go for it, but I have gotten to the point where i dislike having to deal with the sudden drops so I will keep those folks at arms length ICly. -
RE: What themes and subjects do you look for in a game?
I always see +events as guest star spots.
You are there in character but it is not really part of your story, like when Law and Order and Homicide would have characters appear across chows occasionally. It is fun it helps tie the world together but usually lacks any major impact. -

@Sunny
That is well and good though the next time I some one asks me where I rp I will be sure to answer in my living room.
And I will stick with my current mode of considering anyone who gives the answer of "Whatever you want" to the question of "What should I play?" to be someone utterly unconcerned with actually being useful and a good sign to avoid the game in question. -

Much like in the real world, people who ask questions that are not what they mean cannot (with any leg to stand on) expect people to read their damned mind. Seriously. That's bullshit. If you know you mean something else, /ask that/.
Oh really? Then I will assume that you have never asked how someone was doing unless you cared about the answer? Or asked do you know what time it is rather then what time is it?
It would be nice if humans communicated directly what they meant however I will not hold my breath waiting for it. -

And about "whatever you'll enjoy" is just flat, flat wrong. Terribly wrong. I weep for the wrongness of it. It's one of the things that will flat out make me walk away from a game, because it says to me that staff has no idea what kind of game they're actually running, no coherent theme, and no interest in drawing new players into the game in interesting, fun ways.
I agree with this. the answer of play what you want gets me to walk every time. Because rarely is the actual question what is needed. Yes those are the words used, but has humans we do not always express questions in in form to match substance. I always see and have used What is needed? as more of a What kinds of things am I likely to be able to integrate into things easily/quickly. It also is a question to out what types of characters exist for determining good characters concepts to add to the mix. Whatever you want tells me nothing. If I was just going to play what i wanted with out wanting/needing more info I would already be in c-gen.
to use the example Sunny mentioned about Nossie cops, I would prefer an answer along the lings of there are a lot of Nossie cops for example, that means unless I am really set on a Nossie cop I will likely go with a different, and if I was really set on a Nossie cop then I wouldn't have asked in the first place. One upside of telling me there is a lot of Nossie cops is that while I might not want to make yet another one, instead I would think hey lets think of ideas that would have reasons to interact with them.Edit to Add: @Pyrephox
I loved you example answer to the question that is exactly the type of answer I would want when asking "What should I play?" -
RE: What themes and subjects do you look for in a game?
The tone I would really like to see is more action-adventure type, kinda pulpy.
I know you are not wanting systems so instead I will state that has and uses a system is a definite plus for me. I enjoy comic games and can have action-y stuff happen on them but the last of randomized resolution tends to leave me missing something. It does not have to be a complex system just some sort of randomizer, so that an action scene doesn't feel like hey lets goof around with these villains then when it stops being interesting finish them off. In my action scenes I want uncertainty as to result. I am fine with pre-set limits like no hospitalization nor death if it fits with the mood of the story, but don't want a this is how it will end going into it. -
RE: 7th Sea 2nd Edition
I tend to be very anti-PvP but in a system to use for a mush I want a system that is designed to handle it. Sadly this eliminates a lot of table top systems even the ones we use a lot, mainly for the reason that whether or not I like it is going to happen. It happens is tabletops even, the frequency depending on the group, but even the TT group I am in which is strongly anti-PvP as well runs into it from time to time.
Not having any systemic tools for it sounds like a starting point for a lot more staff work in the end. -
RE: The basketball thread
@Ganymede
I agree completely, though I also see the logic of it from the Bulls stand point.
They are stealth-tanking, they can point a big name say hey we are trying to win. All the while knowing they will likely end up in the lottery. they also get the local PR boost of bringing the hometown guy back home. Wade grew up in Chicago, played his college ball at nearby Marquette, this will definitely help the ratings and ticket sales during the rebuilding phase.
Wade gets the cash he deserves, after all regardless of our differences of opinion I would bet we both give him plenty of credit and respect for continually taking less money over the years to help the Heat be able to sign free agents, all the way back to when he took a pay cut to allow them to grab Shaq which lead to the first championship form Wade and franchise. Sadly given his age and the condition of his knees this could have been his last chance for a big contract and I am glad he got it.
For the Heat they lose they face of their franchise but they also made a sound if completely cold hearted business decision. I don't think they will be a better team this year without Wade but I think it will help them going forward since one of the big sticking points between the two sides, at least form the reports I have seen, was Wade wanted a third year from Miami that they were not willing to give.
This is one of those deals that I think ends up benefiting all sides even if it is one most outsiders didn't really want to see. -

Well, fine, you assholes, I GUESS YOU'RE RIGHT.
Although, one pundit believes that he left because of Westbrook, and I can kind of believe that.
I can believe that. While i never heard anything about them not getting along something always seemed forced about their body language when it came to each other.
I also think the Ibaka for Oladipo trade had something to do with it as well.Topic Change edit: Reports are coming out the Wade will sign with the Bulls. While I know he is not the player he once was I find him leaving the Heat a team he has played on for 3 championships and 13 years rather shocking.

I realise that, but I'm trying to tell you two things here.
-
Some very successful MU* have outlived their original creators.
-
Some very bad game creators have stuck around their games, preventing them from moving on and becoming better, only so then can be in charge.
I don't argue either of those two points. and I would definitely check out a place TJ made after it entered into a stable situation however before I decide to apply at I place I would want a reasonable expectation of it being stable. I know not many games actually achieve that.
Like I said I applaud TJ for being open about the situation, more information put out the better to make decisions with, long term perspective might not be a priority for you but that does not mean it is not something to discuss for those that it is a priority to.
Edit to Add: In the specific case of this thread I would be happy to look at the situation after passing off but honestly knowing the pass off is coming would not look at it before. -

In what way was OKC a shitty place to work? The management had just put together a high-caliber team that drove OKC to 7 games in a series. How is that a shitty place to be?
I meant the shitty place to work more in response to Arks question about him signing with a bad team such as the Knicks.
However I will gladly refer to Oklahoma as a whole as one of the very few places that would be able to make someone look forward to ending up in Texas on the other side of it.Trust me having been to both I would consider Cleveland to be a wonderful promised land compared to OKC.
I will admit that while in general I am neural on free agent moves anything that screws over Oklahoma is perfectly fine with me.Though part of the difference is you refer to a professional athlete as a hero, something I would never do unless that professional athlete also did sometime amazing having nothing to do with sport, such s Rocky Bleier, or various others that served the country, or Warrick Dunn who has worked extensively with Habitat for Humanity. I love watching me some sports but nothing done with a ball will get me to utter the word hero.

RE: Interest/Volunteer Check: Major Multisphere Chronicles of Darkness
@Arkandel
I fully support him making new games but his flakiness is why I choose not to play any of them.
To me I don't start to really enjoy RPing a character until around the three or four months in, before that it is mostly first meetings and finding a group I enjoy playing with that enjoys playing with me, and various other things that I slog through to get to the expected fun part later.
So while i see nothing wrong with TJ starting then abandoning game, hey if he enjoys that aspect but not the actual running that is what he should do. I also applaud him for being open and upfront about his intentions.
That said I do think it should be noted that it is his tendency so folks can make informed decisions on whether a game is for them or not. -
RE: Outside the Box GMing
One thing I have always wanted to do but never been able to pull off is the Gibson style converging plots,
where you have two PCs or groups working on seeming unrelated things then eventually end up realizing hey we are all working on the same thing after all, for the ending.
Idoru is my favorite example of this from Gibson's writing but it is seen in most of his novels, I really like it as a story telling device but the problems i have run into in trying it is getting the two groups to the endpoint at nearly the same time since scheduling is always a pain when running things on MUs for me. And then of course the logistics of dealing with the larger group for the concluding parts. -

@Ganymede Let's turn this around a little bit.
How would this conversation have played out if KD had signed with Boston or the Knicks?
If he had signed with the Knicks his loved ones should have petitioned the courts to have him declared incompetent in an effort to keep him out of that dumpster fire.
@Ganymede
There is far more to employment decisions then money. Trust me I left a job where I was making double what I made at the job I took to gain less of a commute and a better work environment with greater job security even now ten years after the fact I make less then I did before with out even figuring in for inflation and could not be happier with the decision. As a general rule I don't criticize people for their career choices nor concern myself with them unless they are close friends, or family, or in cases like this where they become public conversation. I don't think anyone has said good for him for taking more money to go because he did not. But as with any member of labor making a decision they think will better their lives I say good for him
Of course you are allowed to criticize said decision , just as I am free to state i think that criticism is wrong headed that is the wonder of a country with free expression.
One a basketball point of view we are pretty much in agreement, Durant is an upgrade over Barnes but doesn't address the weaknesses shown by the Finals loss and while I will not guarantee they won't win as you did, I will say I do not think Durant makes them a lock, I think they are the favorite going into the season but they were that this year and did not win and for the most part the consensus favorites going into the season do not win more often than they do.Back to @Arkandel I think a huge part of the backlash is that he joined Golden State rather then left OKC, just like with LeBron after the decision most of the backlash was against him joining Wade and Bosh to form a "superteam" rather then him leaving Cleveland and I thought it was ridiculous then as I do with the anti-Durant furor now. Oh noes he selected a good place to work rather then a shitty one how dare he.

RE: The basketball thread
@Ganymede
To me it is less abut economics then basic freedom, barring a contract that limits options people are free to work where they please (minus those activities forbidden by the government), his contract had expired he picked his new employer.
I don't even like Durant, his personality seems utterly bland to me, but I feel that same way about him regardless of weather he is in a Thunder jersey, a Warriors jersey or one of the other 28 teams. -
RE: The basketball thread
@Ganymede said in The basketball thread:
and neither you nor I can prove that Ray Lewis received a lower punishment due to his fame alone.Neither of us can prove it but anyone who thinks he did not is an utter and complete moron. (Edit to Add: technically I don't think it was fame alone that got him light punishment. I think his wealth had a lot to do with it as well)
So what if his employer spent millions on him, the employer profited from his labor, if the billionaire owner wanted reimbursement after they fact they should have put that into the contract, that is what contract negotiations are for. My first post college employer gave me invaluable on the job training, I do not deny this but he also covered himself with a no-compete clause in my employment agreement. the Thunder most definitely helped Durant build his personal brand but that also got to pay him far below market value due to the rookie pay scale so I have zero tears for them in this regard.
I am sorry, but I will never blame or think poorly of an athlete for switching work laundry, and will continue to find the logic of those that do utterly baffling.
