I don’t mean literally using Discord. Discord is our modern IRC. IRC RP is fine, but it’s not a Mu*. I mean using these chat systems as an establishment of ideas that can be used for a modern Mu*.

RE: Good TV
I can only imagine some of the mouthbreathing outrage.
Whenever people freak out about things I go, “This is your tangible White Privilege.”
Fortunately all the white people in my direct life understand this aleready.

Even if someone doesn't want a specific feature it'd be nice if it was possible to even consider it.
Which is why designing by committee is usually such a clusterfuck, especially when people talk down perfectly valid features. Everyone has their fan favorites, but I’m having a hard time taking this thread as a commons of ideas because of it.
—
That doesn’t mean I don’t keep having ideas. Something you said made me think:
I’m surprised that nobody has really looked at Discord (Skype, et al.) as a good model. Not just good, but amazing model. Faraday also mentioned being able to append to poses in a logger, and your mention of quick edits, well we’ve had things that validly do this. What we would need, tho, is a new generation of clients.
It would be a hard sell for the lifers, but I still think it’s a vastly superior model.

@surreality Nah, man. I'm looking for a wall-mounted Microsoft Surface device. We could call it... the Window.

Highly technical people use SSH daily. Your average consumer/gamer simply doesn't use anything like that on a regular basis.
Wait, I've got this:
@thenomain said in What's out there now and what has been attempted? A codebase discussion.:
Obscuring it is not a bad idea
Literally the next line of what you quoted.
And the line after that:
Throw it out because you want to do something that it can’t do.
So I'm not sure why you decided to point out what you did, because I'm already agreeing with the move, just wanting people to do it for reasons other than "because it's old".
I obviously failed, but at least I tried.
--
Hell, people use HTTPS on a regular basis and don't know it. It's obscured. It's obscured to keep people from needing to know, but there because it's a good fit.
So yeah, why on earth does it matter who uses SSH if it's a good fit? And if it's not a good fit...then I reiterate: Why on earth does it matter who uses it?
"Who uses it" may be an indicator of what a good tool is, but since you only corrected me for...reasons I completely don't understand, and didn't explain it, I can only assume that you did it to be More Correct(tm).
*shrug*

RE: Tech N Stuff
An internal screen is harder to accidentally break. The external screen is a normal screen. Also that thing is a brick, a typical early working prototype. Props to Samsung for making this technology work, but I bet we are a good two to three years away from a viable fold-phone.

What MUs do best as a format is something that is hard to describe to a roleplayers in other formats.
I will nonetheless try:
Real-Time Play By Post
I have used this description to great effect to people who don’t know what a Mu is.
—
Otherwise, in response to this thread in general, “It’s not really a Mush lol” is not helpful. Lord British did not think of that when he made Ultima Online. He said, “I want a Mud, but graphical.”
When Colossal Caverns and Adventure came out, the thought wasn’t to create a new medium, but to make Zork, just online.
Think about what can be done. Getting caught up in the semantics is...well, many of us are nerds and programmers and can’t help it, but relentless focus on it holds us back.
—
Edit: And another thing, this “telnet is antiquated” talk should stop. People use SSH daily. Obscuring it is not a bad idea, but throwing out a common protocol just because it’s old is shooting yourself in the foot.
Throw it out because you want to do something that it can’t do.

@thenomain ...what? I don't recall ever posting that. I'd appreciate you not abusing your position. Thank you.
And I'd appreciate you not trolling the boards, but since I have no position here and you're not likely to not add sprinkles of drama wherever you go, I'll just keep on keeping on.
You're...um...welcome?

@tempest said in I owe a lot of people some apologies.:
So, can I get a tl;dr on this? I got bored at like page 1.5
Surreality felt bad after she learned that the things she thought about people weren't true, and went on to apologize publicly.
People responded, as they do on boards.
At first it was a mix of support but mellowed out into a frantic, "What the heck happened?" It didn't take too long for people to out what the heck happened. Some calls for administrative correction of the underlying issue. Etc. etc.
Everything since then is just community chit-chat. Like a near 100% of the threads on this board it's nowhere near its initial purpose. It's a thing we do. You probably got the gist on page one.
How do people decide how much text is a "page" anyway? Soapbox has always been infinite scroll for me.

@thenomain The general action taken in these circumstances is usually no action at all, since most folks tend to like to pat themselves on the back about how 'fair' they are, instead of ejecting toxic people from their games and forums. Criticising the mob for actually calling for someone's ouster seems disingenuous to me.
I was responding to the truth of "do something" usually means "do the thing that I want". I found its lack of existence, as you say, disingenuous and needing clarified.
Or to further clarify: I'm not criticizing the mob, I'm criticizing you.
We, as MUSHers, tend to be an empathetic lot, and thus often shy away from cracking down on serial abusers.
Hello, my name is Thenomain. You might know me from such posts as "VA Spider is toxic forever and ever" and "it's always okay to punch a Nazi".
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to grab some popcorn to watch Tyche troll.

@paris said in I owe a lot of people some apologies.:
People are just identifying the cause of the drama and want something done about it.
I think more that this group of people you're talking about wants what they think is right done about it.
Hell, even Surreality upvoted Faraday's words of caution, which informs my belief that Surr is apologizing first and wants the rest of the fallout to be considerate and fair, not slanted toward her own personal desires.
That takes guts.

In my opinion and experience a good player can make just about any character type highly appealing.
