    • RE: Interest Gauge: City of Mist Game

      @surreality

      I was just thinking in a similar vein (no pun intended)! The cities themselves could be patchy, with neighborhoods that are full-on Spookyville and others that are super mundane. ("Oh Jesus Kevin, lock the doors and drive faster, we're passing through Hell's Kitchen and I just saw Beelzebub.")

      @surreality said in Interest Gauge: City of Mist Game:

      "If there's one thing about Santa Carla I never could stomach, it's all the damn vampires."

      This reminds me of a throw-away line from Buffy, where this band is loading up after playing a set at the Bronze: "Man, I hate playing vampire towns."

    • RE: Good or New Movies Review

      @calindra

      Probably not, haha.

      I was with one of those opening-night crowds that cheered pretty much every first appearance and "bad-ass" moment, but they were in shocked silence at the end credits where you'd usually expect that kind of crowd to applaud, it was actually pretty comical to me.

      Expect a ride, you guys.

      This nerd nitpick is coming to you courtesy of Ixokai, who should really make @Sunny a buffy game.

      Dangling a Buffy game in front of us is really just cruel and unusual punishment at this point.

      But.... in the same way that I love Killer Klowns from Outer Space and not in the whole "this has a place of high honor in the canon of nerd culture" way.

      The show definitely has its ups and downs and takes a while to hit its stride. It's got some episodes that are just flat-out astounding TV ("The Body" five seasons in comes to mind) and entire arcs that are deeply cringe and uncomfortable. I dunno, it's one of those shows that grabbed onto culture and shook it up in a way that is really hard to define, and I imagine it's probably genuinely difficult to feel impressed by it watching it for the first time years and years later after even better TV series that were influenced by Buffy have come and gone.

      Basically, didn't get a position I had been lead to believe I would, someone else got it and I don't think they deserve it, blah blah.

      Let's test this. Let's say all of General Your's friends retired tonight; there are still MUSHes around but they're all ran and played by strangers.

      This has literally been my play experience for years. I've lone wolf'd my way through it since my teens, but what keeps me coming back is how immediately friendly and warm a lot of people in the hobby tend to be given even half the chance. It's awesome.

      As for what drew me, I read LoTR when I was very very young and it impressed on me just a crazy-silly love of storytelling. I was a huge comics nerd when I was a kid and young teen, and while I honestly don't remember how I found MU*s, the chance to not only play but play with my favorite super heroes was just like...a dream come true. I've come and gone from it ever since but yeah, I think I'll keep coming back as long as the medium exists!

      Finally finished Sense8 tonight. There was something so heart-wrenching about -- I don't know how to say it, the optimism of it? Not naivite, but the overwhelming sense of all these different, disparate people, all broken in their own places, reaching out to help each other. I AM VERY OVERWHELMED WITH FEELINGS.

      You pansy, he said, knowing he'll probably tear up or some shit when he watches it.

      Sense8 is goddamn amazing. I sprayed tears all over the place like a cracked fire hydrant.

    • RE: Gauging Interest

      A Whoniverse game would be fun! I know one was tried somewhat recently, and seemed to have a few good months of play in it. I always intended to apply but never had the time, but if I recall correctly I think the biggest issue they faced (and seems likely to crop up again if you don't find some way to address it) is that the game was very group-oriented and individuals had a hard time finding RP.

      @Rinel The comic was over the top (and amazing) too. It's just how Garth Ennis writes. 🙂

      Garth Ennis is the comic-books equivalent of a shock-jock radio DJ. He's deliberately offensive and gross on the level of a maladjusted teenager, TBH. He and Mark Millar are two authors whose popularity I will never understand, and Amazon made the right choice in trimming down the content of the series. It's still very explicit and dark, but in a way that is mostly not completely cringey and awful.

      (Nobody is cutting their drugs with Maeve's vaginal secretions, thank god.)

      He also said Bollywood is secretly a bunch of Buddhist crime fighters (???) and that he realized MUSHers are part of the Japanese Mafia, so...it's all just jumbled nonsense, is what I'm saying.

      @Auspice

      TBH it's arguably hardly steampunk at all. Aside from one flashback scene with zeppelins, I can't think of anything that's not just Industrial-era tech, and it's not like anyone's waltzing around with a ton of extraneous brass buckles and wearing goggles on their top hats or whatever.
